Lauren Canepa 10/11/13 Science 1st period Modeling Osmosis MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will

water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar? HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow from the vinegar across the membrane into the egg. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. The membrane is exposed because were keeping the egg in vinegar until the shell dissolves. The water will flow into the egg because vinegar is made up of 95% of water and the egg is only made up of 74% of water. Since vinegar has a higher concentration of water the water will flow into the egg. The membrane is exposed because were keeping the egg in vinegar until the shell dissolves. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 2 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 13.2 15.8 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 300 300 OBSERVATIONS Bubbles on egg Liquid level displaced 50 ml. CONCLUSION: In this lab we were investigating osmosis. We were trying to find out which way the water would flow if we put a raw egg in a cup that contains 250 ml of vinegar. I hypothesized that if we left the egg in the cup of vinegar for four days the water would flow from the vinegar into the egg. I think this because the vinegar has a high concentration of water and the egg has low concentration of water so the water molecules will go across the selectively permeable membrane and travel into the egg, which would make it expand. My groups expansion was 0.4 cm greater than the average seventh grade expansion. My hypothesis was correct because the water molecules flowed out of the vinegar and into the egg.

ANALYSIS 1. What caused the eggshell to dissolve? The vinegar (weak acid) caused the egg shell (calcium carbonate) to dissolve. This happened because vinegar is made up of 95% water and the egg shell only has 74% water. As the vinegar passes through selectively permeable membrane it causes the egg shell to dissolve. 2. Period 7 Group 3s egg expanded by 4.5 cm after 4 days, compared to Group 7, which expanded 1.1 cm. Compare the results of these two groups. What was the difference in expansion? What was the rate (distance/time) of expansion in 4 days? Explain the discrepancy in data. Why did these groups get different results? The difference in expansion is 3.4 cm. The rate of group 3 is 1.125 cm per day. The rate of group 7 is 0.275 cm per day. The groups got different results because somehow group 3s egg must have absorbed more fluid then the other. Since they used the same types of eggs and the same type of vinegar I am not positive how one group expanded 3.4 cm more after four days. 3. Why do cells need water? Cells need water because water is the main solution to everything. Everything is made up of cells and the things that are alive must need water to survive. Also cells cant reproduce or grow without water.
