Carly Zech Science 7 Period 3 [MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw

egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar? HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow from the vinegar through the membrane into the egg. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. The water will flow into the egg because the vinegar has 95% of water and the egg has 74% of water. Therefore, the water will flow into the egg freely through the membrane because the eggshell would dissolve into the water. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 3 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 14 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 275 OBSERVATIONS

CONCLUSION In this lab, we modeled the effects of osmosis with an egg to see if water molecules in the white vinegar (95%) would flow through the eggs selectively permeable membrane from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. By day 2, there was

Carly Zech Science 7 Period 3 evidence of the egg expanding. By day 2, the egg expanded 1.6cm. By day 4 the egg expanded a total of 2cm. Compared to my groups egg, the entire 7th grade average was 2.9cm. I hypothesized that if a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow from the vinegar through the membrane into the egg. My hypothesis was correct 100% of the time.

ANALYSIS

1. In the vinegar, there is acetic acid that breaks down the calcium carbonate crystals. Then the calcium ions float free which is what you see as bubbles. 2. The difference in expansion of the eggs of the two groups was 3.4. The rate of group threes was 1.125.The rate of group 7s egg was 0.275. These groups got different results because maybe the waster level was a tad off or maybe the egg shell was thicker than the other. 3. Cells need water because it controls its temperature, it helps the cell keep its shape and it breaks down waste products in a cell.
