Introduction:
The incidence of MRSA continues to increase in most hospitals; especially
in public and teaching hospitals. Infectious Disease experts seem to be at a lost
to contain it. Here, I show the program I designed and implemented in my
own private practice.
Methodology:
This program is based upon hand washing with 60 to 70% alcohol for the
surgical scrub, skin-prep-and-drape, prior to all patient(nurses and doctors)contact
and by the patient. It is supplemented with disposable drapes, non-violation of
dressings for 10 days and essential oils.
I have used it for two years and approx. 1,000 standards orthopaedic
operations.
Results:
Over this period, there have been no MRSA infections (
expected is min 50) and 3 staph aureus infections which resolved over 2 months.
Conclusions:
It is possible to prevent MRSA infections when the surgeon controls his/her
own Infection Control Program.
