Magic Blanket

When you are poorly, you can wrap yourself in a magic blanket, put yourself in front of the TV and, hey presto, you will get better! OK, so I was rather a lot younger when I genuinely believed in the medicinal properties of a magic blanket but nonetheless, the power of the magic blanket should not be underestimated, particularly when used with small children! Magic blankets can come in all shapes and sizes, they can be colour-coordinated or wonderfully varied and great for using up scraps from other projects. This pattern is inspired by the original magic blankets crocheted by my Grandma in the 1960s and 70s. One of her magic blankets is pictured above alongside my modern-day version in baby pastel colours.

Gauge
Gauge is not important for this project, you could vary the hook size and yarn weight. However, the measurements given throughout this pattern, as written, are based on the following gauge: 10cm x 10cm = 10 pairs of sts x 11 rows starting with a row of pairs

Materials
4mm Crochet hook Sirdar Snuggly Double Knitting Yarn in 4 different colours

Abbreviations:
CO = cast on Tr = treble stitch (US double) Ch = chain stitch Sts = stitches

Written Instructions:
Row 1 - Using yarn A: Ch 252, turn Row 2 - 1tr in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end, ch 2, turn Row 3 - Change to yarn B: ch2, 1tr in gap between each pair of sts on previous row, turn Row 4 - Change to yarn C: ch2, 2tr between each sts of previous row, turn Change to yarn D: repeat rows 3 and 4, changing the yarn colour on each row, until 141 rows have been worked in total (last row should use yarn C if 4 colours are rotated in order) DO NOT TURN Border: continue with yarn C working 4 or 5 tr to turn corner and then 2tr in the gap between the 1st and 2nd st of each row, turn corner, 1 tr between each st of foundation row, turn corner, 2tr in the gap between the 1st and 2nd st of each row, ch in top of first border st to join. Weave in ends. Finished size = 52 inches/135cm square

Charted Instructions:

Key: = triple crochet (US double crochet) = chain stitch

Red indicates the foundation chain, green is the main pattern and blue is the border.

NB: The chart only shows a 20 stitch by 4 row swatch of the pattern, with a border.
