The day I am not feeling that good...

I stumbled into a new group on Facebook created by one of the old girls. I understand
that it meant for those born in 1974... no sweat! no harm at all! Most probably that way
you will get to know more of your school friends closer in a smaller scale. It's no
problem for me at all. But one thing I asked, please provide a short information about
this blog under your group' description. From this humble blog of course, you will get to
know more about the past, current and future events organized by our OGA.

FYI this is my brain idea to create this blog, as soon as I have been selected as one of the
committee members of our OGA. I thought that we are in the millennium now thus
everyone communicate via online. So I highlighted about this blog in one of our
committee meeting. I was so happy that everyone like the idea, hence Puan Hajjah
Zawiyah asked me to take full in charge of the online thingy.

Then a group on Facebook has been created not long after that under the name 'SMK
Raja Perempuan Kelsom (MGS/GEGS/RPK)' (go here to join the rest of us). It's
basically for us to communicate via the group's discussion board, and just like this blog I
will also forward information about activities and events organized by our OGA.

I really hope that this message will be delivered correctly in a good manner, because I do
not want to come across such of these thing no more—
DeepaRaya Hi-Tea
Hello everyone,

I have been invited to blog which is something new to me. Anyway I want to give it a go
and I will begin with the DeepaRaya Hi-tea I attended on the 25th of October in GEGS. I
belong to the 1974 batch of MCE students and I was really hoping to meet many if not all
my classmates.

Azian, Khor Hooi Leng, Teh Kheng Ean,

Sathiavany and Ms. Rani Muthiah;
more pics can be viewed here.

I think about 200 or so old students turned up. I was lucky this time around as the get-
together was close to Deepavali and I always make it a point to celebrate Deepavali with
my parents in Kuala Kangsar. Luck did not end there as two of my very close friends
from KL, Teh Kheng Ean and Khor Hooi Leng also made it a point to come and meet up.
Then we managed to contact Azian Kamaruddin from MCKK and Faridah Rashidi from
Ipoh—both very dear friends. It was great coming together after all these years. The last
I saw Faridah was in Form 6—about 30 years ago! She is as vibrant as ever! All of us had
a lot of catching up to do.
Coming back to the high-tea which made all of us hiGH— It was well-organized-
registration, buying of the book—Down Memory Lane (on the first principal, Mrs.
N.C.Partridge), a few short speeches followed by a performance by students and cutting
a birthday cake—then plenty of mouth-watering food (Perak food is the BEST!). The
current principal and the president of the OGA were very hospitable. I met Ms. Leong
whom I met many years ago in Kuala Pilah when I was expecting my third child. The
surprising thing was she remembered me. She gave me free milk powder then! We also
met Ms. Rani Muthiah—our Bio teacher in Forms 4 and 5. She is one person who no one
will miss nor forget. She has changed-giggling with us and not frowning at us anymore...
just joking Ms. Muthiah. We were also entertained with songs by our MC of the day and
guess who—Faridah! She sang with such confidence and poise that I am confident she
can stand up to Mawi anytime!

After all the prizes for winners of lucky draws were given out and there was no more
space for food in our tummies, the event slowly came to an end. A number of us were
still feeling nostalgic over our school days and decided to take a tour around the school.
My! My! The changes are astounding—new blocks of classrooms and hostel blocks; form
six classes etc. The hall where we had the function is also new. However—what we were
really thankful for is that the original building where Sir Hugh Low, the British resident
is supposed to have been housed and the additional buildings where the library is; the
SRT rooms and other extensions of the past have been preserved. The pathway up the
hill on which we walked up and the hugh rain trees are still there. The cannon has been
moved but it is still in the school. The classrooms where we sat and studied look the
same except for the position of the white boards which have been changed. We also
walked up the staircase to the tower. Kausheilia and Ambigai as well as a few others
joined us. The rooms we passed, the pictures and the ambience are the same. At the top,
we stood in awe at the picturesque views from all angles. After several snapshots, we had
to drag ourselves down as it is really great to be there at 6 in the evening.

We walked on reminiscing about the old days—where we used to have our assemblies
and Girl Guide meetings, how we used to have fierce arguments, places where we parked
our bicycles and even spots where we lost control of our bicycles and fell.
By the time we could bring ourselves to leave, it was seven in the evening. Reluctantly
we left. Where are you my friends? Let us get in touch with one another so that we can
meet again at the next gathering. Bye for now.

Cik Hajjah Nazipah

Today is a very special day for us, not just everyone at MGS/GEGS/RPK OGA but the
school as well. We are so glad that we celebrated Cik Hajjah Nazipah bt Mohd Najmi's
birthday. What a co-incidence ya... that it falls on the same day as our event ;) I said that
because we didn't realize it at the first place, until our secretary Fadhilah told us about it
during our committee meeting at Wan Pah's house about two weeks ago. Cik Nazipah
was unable to attend that time, thus that make it more easy for us to plan for something
special for her.
Cik Hajjah Nazipah was my former discipline teacher. She also taught me but I can't
seems to remember ler plak... of what was the subject *glurp* And now... she's the
Headmistress of our school since end of 2006.

You have been my mentor and guide

You have taught me right from wrong
And shown me the way all along
On your birthday— Dear Cikgu
I want to search out to you with
My warmest regards & best wishes sincere

Happy Birthday

KPEC TEAM VISITS NZ

November 12th, 2007 by jedd.bartlett

Following the successful ICTPD pilot project in Perak, Malaysia,
earlier this year, a delegation of Principals and ICT facilitators from the 5 Malaysian schools,
along with two Ministry officials, visited New Zealand at the end of October. The group visited a
selection of primary and secondary schools in Auckland, including a number of schools currently
in ICTPD contracts. The visiting educators were particularly keen to observe the way NZ schools
facilitate change across a cluster of schools, and the role of the ICTPD facilitators in this process.
Their next step will be planning school-wide professional learning in their own schools for next
year.
The delegates’ notes are in a wiki and a selection of photographs are available on flickr.

MERDEKA - THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF INDEPENDE NCE

September 4th, 2007 by jedd.bartlett

August 31st marked the 50th anniversary of the Malaysian Independence, and naturally there
were celebrations all over the country. On Friday schools throughout Malaysia had their own
celebrations, and KPEC facilitators have sent me photos of the events in the KPEC schools. The
photos here are from SK Seri Ampang in Ipoh, and there are more on the SK Seri Bayu blog.

A small group of KPEC facilitators and students spent three days at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan
Idris this week. They were invited to participate in the ICT week at UPSI, and to demonstrate
some of the ICT activities that are taking place in the KPEC schools.

On Wednesday 8th, the Perak Queen, Tuanku Raja Permaisuri Bainun, visited the KPEC booth,
and watched as students from SK Seri Ampang took part in a video conference with students
from Outram Primary School in Dunedin, New Zealand.

On Monday July 16th The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Yusuf
Muhibuddin Shahof, visited the teachers and students of the KPEC#1 project, as they were
setting up their exhibition for the visit of the NZ Prime Minister, due to take place the next day.
The Sultan moved around the displays, and sat with a student from each of the 5 schools and
asked them to explain what they had been working on. The Sultan also sat in on the video
conference rehearsal that was taking place, talking with Audrie of LEARNZ in Christchurch
about the Andrill project in Antarctic.

The visit was an incredibly important event for the Perak teachers and students, and there were
many opportunities for photos with the Sultan.

MID POINT IN THE TERM

April 16th, 2007 by jedd.bartlett

This is the 5th week of the Malaysian school term, and with our celebration planned for the 9th
week, we are at the midway point in the project, and it sure feels busy. At every school teachers
are involved in ICT challenges, with students out collecting information, taking photographs,
searching the web, creating presentations, and sharing their findings.
A focus this week for me will be doing my best to collect images, examples of work, video and
feedback from students as they are working on the ICT challenges. I will have to rely on school
facilitators doing this too, when they know some activity is planned. These records are an
important part of the story we will tell about the learning journey that is taking place in the
cluster schools.
A focus for the facilitators is to support teachers in getting online to record their impressions,
reflections, and day-to-day experiences, because these too will form part of the story.

F R O M L E S S O N S TO TO P I C S

April 16th, 2007 by jedd.bartlett

A common topic for discussion in our meetings with mentor teachers is the concept of an ICT
challenge as a topic based series of activities over several weeks, rather than the more common
format - a series of separate lessons, covered one period at a time. Science text books are written
in this way - they are very closely tied to curriculum documents, encouraging teachers to move
in a step by step fashion through a series of disparate lessons under a common broad theme.
When planning an ICT challenge that involves students setting questions, searching for and
collecting information, and working collaboratively to present their findings, it is clear that
weeks rather than a one hour lesson will be required. This can be challenge for teachers in itself,
given the large class sizes and the fact that students are used to a step by step approach. Part of
the solution is to encourage teachers to take the larger concepts of the curriculum, and plan to
them.
This is a critical aspect of the KPEC PD programme and one that will be unfolding in teachers’
reflective blogs over the next few weeks.

In the visit to SMK Matang today, and in the visits last week, the importance of the team
approach, and the need to allow time to build relationships has become very clear. The
facilitation team of 4 today worked in pairs as we discussed teachers??? plans in a meeting that
last 4 hours. The discussions flowed around issues associated with ICT in secondary schools,
teaching and learning approaches, ways to increase student access to ICT, and our own
experiences and anecdotes. The Facilitation team brings a great combination of expertise in the
areas of pedagogy, local learning and teaching strategies, and ICT activities that enhance learning
and increase student engagement. The success of the lengthy session is apparent in reading
today???s blog entries by Norlizah and Jenny.
A challenge for us will be finding ways to maintain the momentum we have gained today, and I
think that the ???Mentor teachers discussing the ICT challenges??? forum can play an important
role in doing this, but we need teacher participation. As Norlizah pointed out today, the most
effective way of getting teachers writing online is to sit beside them and assist them with their
early efforts, so we will need to split into 2 groups and increase the number of times we visit
each school I think.
