403 10-23-2013 Gun Control, From Different Perspectives: An Annotated Bibliography This annotated bibliography is written for the reason to investigate the very exigent and controversial issue of gun control in the world. Ever since I came here to the US Ive heard about this issue, both from the people around me and the media. Ive talked to people that are both for and against it, from which Ive gained a basic understanding from different perspectives. This topic is very interesting to me since the gun laws here in America is so different from ours in Sweden. Where I live, people who hunt are the only people that own guns, for which they have to have a license for. I think this issue is worth examine because I believe people would want to know opinions from different perspectives, which I will include later in my research. My research question that helped me lead my research is; Should all people be allowed to own a gun? I started my research on October 4th 2013, and ended it on October 21st 2013. Included in this annotated bibliography are four sources in total, from which two of them are from the last year, and three of them are academic peer-reviewed articles.

Nystrom 2 Dupuy, Tina. "Trust Me: You Believe in Gun Control." Humanist 72.4 (2012): 10-11. Academic Search Premier. Web. 20 Oct. 2013. This op-ed article was written to inform gun owners that gun control is something that is necessary in America. The author uses different examples from the consequences of gun ownership, but she also includes research from books and articles to help prove her point. Dupuy states that it often happen that guns fall into the wrong peoples hands, because of the approachableness of getting a gun. Furthermore, the author also strengthens her thesis by expressing that the reason that people want to hang on to their gun laws is because they want to protect themselves against the government, and also because its a civil right according to the second amendment.

Many reasons contribute to the credibility of this source. The article was published recently (in 2012) and is very relevant to the research question and topic that makes it a valuable source. One limitation of this op-ed article is the place of publication. Humanist is a magazine, which makes the source a bit less reliable.

This source helps me get a deeper understanding for my research question, and also providing information about what brought up the ideas and opinions of one of the stakeholders, the gun owners, which gave me a better understanding of the intended audience and their point of view.

Gostin, Lawrence O. "The Right to Bear Arms: A Uniquely American Entitlement." JAMA: Journal of The American Medical Association 304.13 (2010): 1485-1486. Academic Search Premier. Web. 13 Oct. 2013. In this scholarly op-ed article Gostin discusses the second amendment and the right to bear arms in America. It was written for He also traces further development of the McDonald v

Nystrom 3 Chicago landmark decision and how the people who have firearms in their house put themselves, their family and the people around them at risk of being injured. To make his points he uses evidence like statistics and different research papers. In the article, Gostin questions why there should be a law that supports people to own a property that is designed to cause injury or death (1). Furthermore, the author also points out how the laws must be different depending on where in the state you live, since the use of a firearm is more useful when hunting for example, than in urban areas where they struggle with violent city gangs.

According to Wikipedia, Lawrence O. Gostin is an American law professor and has a very impressive background in this issue, which makes him trustworthy to the audience. The place of publication is a peer-reviewed medical journal, which makes the source reliable. One limitation to this source is the recency, because the article was written in 2010.

This source really helped with my research because the author made some suitable points about how the society is affected by the right to bear arms that I hadnt thought about. The only possible stakeholders that is brought up in this article is the hunters, which the authors persuade their opinion in a very short manner.

Isaacs, David. "Children and Guns: A Call to Disarm." Journal of Pediatrics & Child Health 49.9 (2013): 699-700. Academic Search Premier. Web. 13 Oct. 2013. This peer-reviewed article examines how the children in America are affected by how easily they can get their hands on a gun, since a third of all households have firearms in their homes. The intended audience for this article is the parents with guns in their homes, which the author of the articles tries to inform the danger of this problem. Isaacs uses mostly facts and statistics to prove his points, and he also uses ethos to emotionally affect the readers. The author states

Nystrom 4 that the children suffer from the fact that the parents have guns accessible in their home, which will put them in risk of getting injured more easily. He supports his argument by giving an example of how when they decreased the number of firearm in the Australian homes, the suicides dropped by 80%.

According to Wikipedia, the author is a clinical professor and also a doctor at a hospital in Australia that makes him trustworthy to the readers. The fact that the text is a journal that has been peer-reviewed makes it a reliable source. Another reason why this article is trustworthy is because it is very recent written. The only problem with the source is that the whole article might not be exactly relevant to my issue, which is why I am only going to use parts of it in my exploratory essay.

This source helps me with my research because the author explains how having a firearm in the house can affect the children. Isaacs gave information in his text from the parents perspective, which will help me in writing my essay later on. For example, it provides information about one of the stakeholders, the parents, and their point of view.

Jacobs, James B. "'Right to Bear Arms' Decision Would Improve Gun Control." USA Today n.d.: (2002) Academic Search Premier. Web. 20 Oct. 2013. This scholarly article was written for other professors of constitution that are involved and educated about the gun laws. Jacobs attempts to inform the readers about the issue of gun control from different perspectives, and how the second amendment is often misinterpreted. He uses court cases as facts to establish credibility with the readers. One important argument that Jacobs brings up in his article is that the American gun owners are extremely afraid that registration would lead to confiscation (1) for their firearms. The author calls for a different

Nystrom 5 interpretation (2) of the second amendment, which would include fingerprints and a national registry. He states that the second amendment is made for protection of individuals, not states.

This source is very trustworthy because of several factors. The author is very reliable since he is, according to Wikipedia, a professor of constitutional law. This means that he has high education and knowledge about the issue. The place of publication is the biggest newspaper in America, which also makes the source reliable to the readers. However, one limitation to this source is the recency, since it was written in 2002.

By providing trustworthy facts and many examples about the issue, the source really helps me with answering my research question. The author discusses the issue from the different sides and perspectives, such as people that might misinterpret the second amendment. This will also help me get a better understanding for my intended audience and their different values when Im writing my exploratory essay. For example, if they value their gun as a safety device, or if they value their safety higher without firearms. The article provides information about some stakeholders that I have not thought about yet, professors and lawyers, and their beliefs.
