PROPELLENT / FUEL

LIQUID SOLID HYBRID

LIQUID PROPELLENT/ FUEL

Advantages 1. highest energy per unit of fuel mass, 2. variable thrust 3. restart capability. 4. Raw materials have abundant supply and easy to manufacture Disadvantages 1. require complex storage containers 2. Require complex plumbing 3. fuel and oxidizer injection must be precise/ accurate 4. Need high speed/high capacity pumps 5. difficult to store fuelled rockets.

SOLID PROPELLENT/ FUEL

1. 2. 3. 4. Advantages relatively stable - can be manufacture and store Have high density and can burn very fast Insensitive to shock, vibration and acceleration. No propellant pumps are required - rocket engines are less complicated.

Disadvantages 1. Cannot be throttled, turned off and then restarted once ignite 2. The surface area of the burning propellant is critical 3. Cracks may cause propellant burn faster and may explode 4. Manufacture ofpropellent expensive

HYBRID PROPELLENT/ FUEL

ADVANTAGES 1. Amount of liquid injected per unit of time effect the thrust of rocket. 2. The rocket engine can be stopped and resume. 3. Provide higher energy 4. Can be stored for long periods 5. Less sensitive to damage to the solid fuel component
Disadvantages 1. Do not generate as much energy per pound of propellant 2. More complex 3. Hybrid propellant rocket engines are still in development
