WIND ENERGY

HOW DO WIND TURBINES WORK

The blades on a wind turbine works like a blade on an airplane. Blowing air passes through both sides on the blade, causing the air pressure to be uneven higher on one side of the blade, and lower on the other. Which makes it spin, the uneven pressure causes the blade to spin around the center of the turbine

The blades are attracted to a shaft, which turns about 18rpm. Thats not fast enough to generate electricity by its self.

Do the rotary shaft spins a series of gears which will increase the rotation up to around 1800 rpm which will make enough electricity for many homes, or companies.

FACTS

Wind energy is one of the lowest price for renewable energy Wind energy is use in almost 50% of USA One single turbine can provide up to 200 homes, and one farm can provide up to 9,000 homes. Most turbines are mounted around 100 feet high Theres a ladder inside the pole of the windmill There is a computer at the very top and both that regulates the speed of the tower.

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages

Wind is free and with modern tech it can be captured efficiently Clean fuel source Doesnt pollute the air One the lowest renewable energy sources techns available today Wind turbines can be built on farms or ranches.

Disadvantages

Noise distractions- wind towers are very loud/noisy threat to wildlife- due to large scale wild life construction it is a threat to wildlife wind can never be predicted suited to a particular region visual impact- people consider them to be an undesirable experience.

EFFICIENCY

Theres not really energy until the wind speeds are around twenty miles per hour and maximum around 33 miles per hour. Once it gets to a high wind speed of around 50 it automatically shuts down. Wind turbines have a life span of 20yrs. There are more efficient alternatives to fossil fuel energy

COST
The costs for a utility scale wind turbine in 2012 range from about $1.3 million to $2.2 million per MW of nameplate capacity installed. This cost has come down dramatically from what it was just a few years ago The exact cost would depend on the insurance, construction expenses, etc. Although it may be expensive when you first get it over time youll save so much money.
