Step 1 With 1 strand of floss and the #10 Sharps needle, sew a running stitch around the center

cutting line, forming a box around the area.

Step 2 Position the thread below while sewing from the upper edge to center line on upper portion of buttonhole to form a blanket stitch.

Step 3 Stitch entire upper edge, tacking down last loop at center line. Bring the needle to the lower right corner of the foundation.

Step 4 Stitch 3 stitches to bar tack the edge.

Step 5 On the third bar tack, emerge in the center of the buttonhole on the cutting line, being careful not to catch the purls in the stitch.

Step 6 Turn the work around and work back along the remaining buttonhole edge stitching from the upper edge to the center, encasing the running stitches within the stitches.

Step 7 Stitch all the way back to the end of the buttonhole, tacking over the last stitch and emerging at the lower right hand corner of the buttonhole.

Step 8 Bar tack the remaining edge as before and tie off on back by sliding the needle beneath the stitches there. Squeeze the buttonhole edges together to open the center. Then carefully cut through the fabric to open the buttonhole.
