The Aurora Police Department Media Relations Unit is seeking a qualified upper classman or graduate student in either journalism or communications studies. This program is ongoing and accepting applications year round with flexible start dates. Qualified applicants should possess excellent writing skills. The applicant is expected to have computer skills and be comfortable working in Word and PowerPoint. The applicant should also possess knowledge of social media sites to include, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. This internship will provide the student with a close look at what it is like to be a Public Information Officer for a busy police department. The student will have the opportunity to be a part of writing press releases, organizing press conferences, planning and observing press briefings. The student will also have the opportunity to participate in many other tasks that the Media Relations Unit handle such as the annual safety report, crime prevention literature for the public, website content, video productions, etc. The student will have to pass a background check as part of the selection process. Furthermore, students must adhere to the dress code and policies and procedures pertaining to the department employees. The student will work approximately 16 hours a week over the 10 week term, and the schedule can be flexible to fit the students needs. This internship is not paid.
