Lesson Plan 29/8/13 Period 3 Topic: History: Australian involvement in the War Year Level: 10 Learning Outcomes: Students

investigate wartime experiences through a study of World War II in depth. This includes a study of the causes, events, outcome and broader impact of the conflict as an episode in world history, and the nature of Australias involvement.
By the end of the lesson, students will have a deeper understanding of what occurred on the Kokoda Track and Australias involvement in WWII

Introduction:

Kokoda Track Play the last 7/8 minutes of the video from last lesson and advise students to add notes and names of the important names, events and places they hear to their tables. Investigate Kokoda Track Put questions on the board for students to investigate using information from the internet and their text book (20 minutes +) Reading textbook: Page 98-99 (15 20 minutes) Advise students to add these notes in the table that they have commenced creating after these two pages have been read. Fighting for Britain -Australian airmen involved in air war against Germany -Fought in the Battle of Britain (1940) The Blitz -Australians served in North Africa (Egypt/Libya) and against Japan (Singapore, Air battles over the pacific ocean, Kokoda) Rats of Tobruk -Australias first involvement in WWII -North Africa from British colony in Egypt -Australians assisted in holding the port of Tobruk in Libya The Second AIF in Greece, Crete, Syria and Egypt -Greece: Preventing Italian invasion -Invaded Lebanon and Syria The fall of Singapore - Resulted in many Australians becoming prisoners of war - This left Australia vulnerable to attack and not well defended. Prisoners of War Page 103 104 (5 minutes) Have students copy down notes regarding Australians experiences as prisoners of war add to table also. Write on board Take notes (10 minutes)

Body of Lesson:

Summarise the experience and impact on Australians who were prisoners of war. Question 2, page 106 to discuss how things were at Changi prison camp. Test your knowledge (5-10 minutes) Quiz on War in Pacific Assessment: Monitoring student responses and ensuring they do not have any misconceptions about the content. Walking around the room during completion of activities to ensure that students questions are answered Formative assessment: Students participating in quiz. Advise students to reflect on how well they did as they should feel confident in answers these questions to do well on the test. Conclusion: Remind students to bring back a signed note and money for excursion. Advise students to assess how well they feel they have grasped the information by how they went on this test.
