Algebra and Indices (Chapters 1 and 2) Test Reflections Level 1-2 1. c.

In this question, I didnt answer it so that is where I went wrong. I remember trying to complete this question but I couldnt quite remember how to figure it out. To complete the problem properly, this is what I did; c.

x= 5 To get this I figured out the problem by placing a common denominator of 5, before evening out and simplifying the sides to get x equaling 5. To Improve, I need to remember how to find the common denominator when there is a fraction on one side and full number on the other. 2. d. a-2 x a2 = a1 In this question, I got it incorrect because when I was figuring it out, I knew that anything to the power of 0, is 1. So, from there I did a1 because I thought that was what it should have looked like. I didnt do anything correct in this problem. This is how I shouldve done the problem; d. a-2 x a2 =1 To get the correct answer and marks, I correctly followed the rule that anything to the power of 0 is 1. To improve, I need to follow a rule all the way through when I am using it in an equation. Level 3-4 5. b. 3( ) ( )

In this question, I got something in the first line of solving wrong, so it reflected on the rest of the problem. I forgot to multiply the -4 and the -2 in the second pair of brackets. This led to me then writing -4 instead of 8. Then, For the rest of the problem I went off of 4 so the answer turned out to be

something different. I correctly added the x values and multiplied the other values. I should have done the problem like this; 5. b. 3( ) ( )

To correct myself and the problem, I relooked at the first line and correctly multiplied the -4 and -2, not leaving them out. From there, I got +8 and continued to work out the rest of the problem, ending up with -3. To improve next time, I need to remember and realize to multiply everything inside the brackets with the outside value. 6. Simplify, giving your answer in index form: a. 2a x 2(a-1) = 43a-1 In this problem, I got it wrong because I didnt correctly answer it. I wrote there was 3a in the end but there is only supposed to be 2. I should have done the problem like this; 6. Simplify, giving your answer in index form: a. 2a x 2(a-1) = 22a-1 To get this correct answer, I went back and remembered how to do it. I added the exponents and left the base number as 2, getting the final correct answer. To improve for next time, I need to remember the method of adding/multiplying exponents and simplifying. 7. Simplify the following, giving your answers in scientific notation: (2.7 x 10-3) x (9.6 x 109) (2.7 x 9.6) (10-3 x 109) 25.92 x 106 2.59 x 107

I got this problem wrong because at the end of the problem, instead of writing 2.592, I wrote 2.59, leaving out the 2. I got the rest of the problem right, the scientific notation and multiplication. This is how I should have done it: 7. Simplify the following, giving your answers in scientific notation: (2.7 x 10-3) x (9.6 x 109) (2.7 x 9.6) (10-3 x 109) 25.92 x 106 2.592 x 107

I corrected it by writing 2.592 in the end instead of 2.59, which is the error I made in my first attempt of this problem. To improve next time, I need to be more aware and careful of what I write as my final answer. Level 5-6 9. a. = 1 x 4(1-1) = 41-1
( )

In this problem, I got the final answer wrong. I wrote 41-1 instead of working it out further and simplifying. I got the steps right but I just stopped writing and should have gone further and answered it with writing out 1-1 as 0. To correctly answer the problem, I should have done this; 9. a. = 1 x 4(1-1) = 41-1 = 40 =1
( )

I correctly answered the problem by going further, and simplifying the exponent from 1-1 to 0. Then, because anything to the power of 0 is 1, the final answer would be 1. To improve next time, I should finish the problem and simplify it more, rather than leaving it unfinished. 10. If K = , Find K when m = 5.62 x 1011 , n = 7.97 x 10-9 and p = 8.44 x

10-4. Give your answer correct to 3 significant figures. ( ) ( ) ( )

= 29.821 x 1017 = 2.982 x 1018 I got this problem fully wrong because I had an idea of what I was doing but I wasnt sure how to fully carry it out. I also forgot to write that the bottom part was cubed. I didnt do anything correct in this problem. I shouldve done it like this;

10. If K =

, Find K when m = 5.62 x 1011 , n = 7.97 x 10-9 and p = 8.44 x 10-4.

Give your answer correct to 3 significant figures. ( ( ( ( ) ( ) ) ) )

= 29.821 x 1025 = 2.982 x 1026 I got the correct answer now by including the power of 3 in the denominator. This made the denominator correct and different to what it was before. To improve for next time, I need to see what im writing and include everything it says and asks in the question.

Level 7-8 11. b. 9x = 27(2-2x) 32x = 36-6x 2x = 6-6x = I got this question wrong because in the end, I could have simplified it to instead of I got the rest of the problem right except for the end. I should have done this; 9x = 27(2-2x) 32x = 36-6x 2x = 6-6x

I got this correct answer by simplifying further. To improve next time I could remember to always simplify the answers I get to the simplest they can be.

12. a.
( ) ( ) ( ) ( )

I got this question wrong because I left it blank. This was because I wasnt sure how to figure it out. This is how I shouldve done it; a.
( ) ( ) ( ) ( )

( ) ( )

I got this correct answer because I asked for help and I figured it out through different steps. I changed the 25 into a 52, then the 50 into a 1 and multiplied the numbers from there. Next time, I need to improve expressing numbers in the simplest form with a prime.

b. ( ) =

( )

In this question, I did everything wrong. I didnt express 32 in its simplest form and I didnt write the second term correctly. I should have completed the problem like this; b. ( = = 2-3 I found the correct answer to this question by writing 32 in its simplest term, which was a base of 2 and power of 5. Also, then I added the 5/2 and the -1/2 together and got -3. Next time to improve, I have to express numbers in their simplest form with a prime and also to remember how to work with exponents that are fractions. ) ( )

c. Without using a calculator, show which is smaller. No marks will be given without working shown. 815 or 425 15 8 is the smallest. I got this question wrong because I didnt do the question properly. I didnt show my working as to how I got to the conclusion that the 8 was smaller. I got the answer correct but I didnt show my work. This is how I shouldve done it; Without using a calculator, show which is smaller. No marks will be given without working shown. 815 or 425 Those two numbers can be simplified to ; 218 or 227 Therefore, 815 is smaller. I found this way by simplifying both the numbers so they have the same base. Next time, I will remember to simplify so I can easily get the answer.
