Title of Experience/Artifact: Muscular Dystrophy Power Point Adapted PE volleyball lesson plan Date Experiences Completed: Muscular Dystrophy

Power Point Fall 2012 Lesson plan Fall 2012 Artifact Description: The artifacts included contain information related to students with disabilities. The power point was created and presented throughout a college course. It allowed me to learn more about the disability, as well as modifications and strategies to use when working with a child with that disability. The adapted physical education volleyball lesson demonstrates my ability to modify activities in a variety of ways so all students can participate in the same classroom. Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment: I believe these artifacts align best with Standard Three: Diversity; Teachers Understand that Children Learn Differently. The teacher understands how pupils differ in their approaches to learning and the barriers that impede learning and can adapt instruction to the diverse needs of pupils, including those with disabilities and exceptionalities. These artifacts align with this standard because they demonstrate my ability to gather information and resources to gain the knowledge necessary to teach individuals with varied learning needs, as well as plan lesson plans that will work for all students involved. Not only is it the teachers responsibility to make sure all students are properly engaged in learning throughout their classroom, but it is also their responsibility to learn about different disabilities and understand the necessary modifications that need to be made that will help provide a better learning environment. The volleyball lesson plan shows competency in this standard by understanding what the student with a disability is able to do and applying that knowledge when creating the lessons activities. UW-Platteville School of Education Knowledge, Skills and Dispositions Alignment: I believe the adapted physical education volleyball lesson plan aligns best with KSD2.a. Creates an Environment of Respect and Rapport; the candidate demonstrates genuine care and respect for students while the students exhibit respect for the teacher. The student also displays genuine care and respect for one another as individuals and as students, and are aware of cultural, social, intellectual and physical variations among their peers. This lesson plan aligns with this KSD because as an instructor I demonstrated respect for all students by providing modifications in equipment and rules to ensure all students physical and intellectual needs were being met. This lesson plan also demonstrates student to student respect by the understanding of why modifications are used and needed for some students. For example; the students showed respect for June (student with disability) when using the modified rules. Lacking in upper body strength, June was allowed to serve the ball closer to the net. I believe the muscular dystrophy power point best align with KSD1.d. Demonstrates Knowledge of Resources; the candidate actively seeks materials and resources to enhance instruction by utilizing school and district resources as well as other resources available outside the school/district. This power point align with this KSD because it demonstrates my ability to find resources related to the given topics, allowing myself to better teach students with disabilities.

Knowing about each disability will overall enhance my students learning because I will be able to tailor lesson plans to their specific needs in order for upmost learning to occur. Also, the power point demonstrates my ability to use credited sources to obtain reliable information. This is important because there is always new information to learn and different modifications to implement. Staying up to date by using those credited sources will allow me to provide a variety of instructional methods when teaching my students. Secondary KSD alignment includes: KSD3.e. Demonstrates Flexibility and Responsiveness What I learned about teaching/learning from this experience: From these experiences I have learned the importance of gaining appropriate knowledge in order to plan meaningful lessons for all students. I learned that all students learn differently and have various needs that need to be met. As a teacher, it is my job to modify instruction and equipment so all students learning is positive and meaningful. Some modifications may not be as beneficial for students so research may need to be done in order to find a plan that works. What I learned about myself as a prospective educator as a result of this experience/artifact: As a future educator, I have learned that I am capable of working with students with special needs. I can modify lesson plans in a variety of ways; changing the rules, using different equipment and using different teaching strategies. Most importantly, I enjoy working with these students. These artifacts have taught me that I am able to do the appropriate research in order to be prepared and successful when teaching and working with any student with a disability.
