Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact Rationale/Reflection NAEYC Standard:

STANDARD 1. PROMOTING CHILD DEVELOPMENT AND LEARNING Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs are grounded in a child development knowledge base. They use their understanding of young childrens characteristics and needs, and of multiple interacting influences on childrens development and learning, to create environments that are healthy, respectful, supportive, and challenging for each child (NAEYC, 2010).

Brief Description of Evidence:


I created literacy based learning centers for my ECED 233 Emerging Literacy in the fall of 2012. The theme for the learning centers were Dr. Seuss and each learning center match one of the three books of Dr. Seuss that I choose. I used several different activities to offer multiple interactions for a variety of childrens characteristics and needs while designing activities that would provide an environment that is healthy, respectful, supportive, and challenging for each child. I included objectives, foundations or state standards met, instructions, and supplies for each activity.

Analysis of What I Learned:


Through creating the literacy based learning centers I was able to learn how important it is to offer multiple activities for children to learn from such as reading a story and then completing an activity to help the children remember the story, discuss the story further, or using the storys topic to create a fun learning activity to provide the children with further learning in more than one domain. I was able to gain a better understanding of meeting the needs of many childrens characteristics.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:


This project is just one of many projects in which I created learning activities that promoted child development and learning through offering multiple interacting influences within the activities to meet young childrens characteristics and needs while creating opportunities to provide an environment that supports each child while challenging them in a healthy and respectful environment.
