Common Core/ NM Content Standards: Speaking and Listening Standards Literacy.SL.9-10.1, Draw on preparation (answering questions) to hold a discussion based on the text.

Essential Question(s): What are strategies for Comprehending and analyzing fiction and nonfiction texts?

Connections (prior learning/prior knowledge): Students have identified conflicts between characters, and written down examples of figurative language.

Resources/Materials Kite Runner and Time Magazine Teacher: Students:

Assessment (How will you monitor progress and know students have successfully met outcomes?) Daily: Do Now checks for understanding of the previous days lesson. Written assignments and quizzes check for understanding of daily lessons.

This Week: Answering questions about the Kite Runner, taking a quiz; Answering questions about a news article that requires information that is explicit and information that must be inferred. Also, students must summarize main ideas and supporting details and write them down. Students will also write a creative narrative with a main character modeled on a character in the book. In writing this narrative, students show an understanding of a complex character. Unit:

Time allotted MONDAY Learning TargetStudents will analyze how complex characters develop, interact with others characters and develop a theme by answering questions and holding a discussion. Students will analyze a character by writing a story that mirrors the characters personality.

Lesson activities for instructor and students Assignment(s) DueRead Chapter 5 and take a quiz. Work on story modeled on the personality of Assef. Follow a rubric that lists key elements of a story: create a setting using descriptive language (at least one simile or metaphor), develop a character using dialog and action, create a conflict between two characters, lead action to a high point and then

WEDNESDAY Learning Target- Analyze how the author creates a sense of suspense through foreshadowing, creating uncertainty, word choice, pacing (by varying sentence length) and write down examples from p. 43, 47, 49 Work on developing creative narrative.
