Home-Baked Memories
NOTHING SAYS HOLIDAY LIKE THE WONDERFUL FRAGRANCE OF SOMETHING DECADENTLY SWEET BAKING IN THE KITCHEN.
Entertaining expert ALEXANDRA HEDINs most meaningful memories were made in the kitchen. When I was a little girl, I spent hours in the kitchen baking with my mother. Now that Im a mother myself, I make sure I spend the same time with my children especially around the holidays when everything is so hectic. When shes not in the kitchen with her family, Alexandra evokes that warm feeling of togetherness with Air Wicks Homemade Holiday Collection, like the expertly-crafted Vanilla Butter Cream Cupcake fragrance.
HOMEMADE INSPIRATION!
Alexandras tips for turning your favorite Air Wick scent into a pretty holiday centerpiece: 1. Place a clear glass tumbler upside down in the center of a glass vase. 2. Fill the space between the tumbler and the vase with an assortment of glass ornament balls. 3. Place the Air Wick candle in the center of the tumbler; secure in place with oral clay. 4. Tie a bow around the vase. 5. Light the candle and enjoy. For more Homemade Holiday inspiration from Alexandra, visit alexandrahedin.com.

ON MY MIND
Gratitude
feel happiest when I feel most grateful. And its not just me; its true for humans in general: Study after study has shown that when we stop to count our blessings, smell the rosespick any clich you likewe not only appreciate the good things in our lives more, but also expand our sense of well-being in ways scientists can measure but cant always explain. The trick is slowing down long enough to do it. If something trips my be thankful wire (and it can be anything from an arrestingly beautiful sunset to a story I hear on the news), I lean into it, pausing long enough to enumerate things and people Im grateful for. But on my own steam, barreling through the days as I do, Im not so good at that. Sound familiar? So in this issue, weve gathered 30 small blessings to count, one for each day of this month, to lead up to Thanksgiving and to help you create a daily habit of appreciating one simple thing (see page 111). Ive already started practicing my own new habit: Before I open my eyes each morning, I think of what Im thankful forvery specific things, not my husband or my daughter but the rakish way Jims eyebrows hike up when he teases Lucy or the smell of the lavender on my bedside table.
Or Inas laugh. Ina Garten, on our cover this month, has the most earthy and intelligent laugh Ive ever heard; its downright infectious. When we were talking about how she puts her Thanksgiving feast together, how she shares it with her friends, and the joy she gets from it, I could practically smell the turkey roasting. She is both generous and exacting, grounded and ambitious, practical and imaginative. I just love that. And Im thankful for it. Im also thankful for you. I deeply appreciate your e-mails, Facebook posts, tweets, lettersand, yes, even the complaints. I love how we share affection for this long-lived and magnificent magazine, a bellwether of American womanhood. And I love that no matter how frenetically we live our lives day to day, these pages are a rest stop. Happy Thanksgiving,

ELEVATE HORS DOEUVRES Serve on rustic cu ing boards. Go with fare that will keep well in your refrigerator for those few holiday weeks: olives, nuts, salami, hard and semi-hard cheeses like Cheddar, Gruyre, fontina, and Goudano-sweat nibbles in lieu of dinner. RAID YOUR FREEZER Turn out a gourmet treat on a dime: Heat frozen french fries under the broiler, add salt and pepper, sprinkle with dried herbs (e.g., rosemary, thyme), and serve bistro-style, upright in waxed-paper or parchment-paper cones.
1
2
STEALTH CLEAN Focus on rooms youll be using (living room, kitchen, and bathroom), then close the doors literallyon the rest. Corral stray gadgets, unopened mail, and other domestic detritus in a laundry bin to stow in a closet. Slip a sock on your hand for a swi dust-down. Hide dishes in the dishwasher or a basket beneath the sink to be dealt with in the A.M. Then smile: No one will ever know.
GO FOR THE GLOW Turn o harsh overheads and use lamps or creative groupings of tiny tealights, or swap a few ordinary bulbs for pink LEDstheyre a ering to every skin tone (and way easier than painting your living room coral).
3 5
BREAK BREAD Thaw frozen bague es in a 350F oven 10 minutes; slice lengthwise and strip bread from centers. Add cheese, meat, or roasted red peppers; wrap in foil; warm; then slice.
DONT FORGET
dessert. Grab a few bars of really good chocolate (we like a mix of dark, milk, and white), break into pieces, and serve on a platter with nuts and dried fruit.
3 5
FRESHEN UP the bathroom. Cluster pillar candles in dierent sizes on shelves. Pipe in soothing music (the X-Mini II palmsize speaker hooks up to most mobile players).
DECORATE by numbers. Pull together a grouping of similar objects (think blue glass vases, an array of shells, silver-framed photos), then use as an accent anywhere.
END ON A WARM NOTE Serve hot chocolate with a splash of mint extract (brandy optional). Or heat up a jar of hot fudge sauce, pour over ice cream in shot glasses, and serve as mini sundaes.
SHOP THE BACKYARD This time of year, its easy to put together a tablescape with found objectsdried leaves and grasses, fall fruit, unshelled nuts. Arrange on a pla er, and youre done.

Q
Is a $10 moisturizer just as good as a $50 one?
A. Yes. For basic moisturizer, price doesnt matter.
Hydrating ingredients arent expensive. What youre paying for in a pricey moisturizer is packaging, fragrance, and the nice lady at the counter selling it to you, says Los Angeles dermatologist Jessica Wu, M.D., author of Feed Your Face. Just check the ingredients for tried-and-true hydrators like glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and panthenol. Our pick: Olay Age Defying Instant Hydration Day Cream ($10, drugstores). Save your money for serums or night creams; ingredients like peptides and retinol can drive up their cost (by $25 or more).
youre acne-prone. If your skin is already oily, using an oil can clog pores, which ups the potential for breakouts, says New York City dermatologist Debra Jaliman, M.D., author of Skin Rules. This applies for both mineral oil and plant-based oils such as sunower and olive. However, if you have dry skin, an oil can help lock in moisture; use it under or in lieu of a moisturizer. One option: Lumene Complete Rewind Intensive Recovery Beauty Oil ($30, drugstores).

Q
Will an over-theng counter brightening cream get rid of my dark spots?
A. No. A lightener or brightener cant t fully eliminate spots (which are too deep in the skin), but it can fade them a d. lot, especially if they are newly formed. One to try: LOral Paris Youth Code Dark Spot Correcting & Illuminating Serum Corrector ($25, drugstores) a 2013 Anti-Aging Award winner. An inven oce laser can eradicate spots, but even that method isnt foolproof: If youre not rd, diligent about daily sunscreen afterward, ht that hyperpigmentation will come right back, says Tamella Buss Cassis, M.D., a dermatologist in Prospect, KY.

Q
My skin is really dry. Is moisturizing enough to o fix it?
A. No. When youve reached the scaly, itchy stage, using lotion alone wont cut it. If you dont exfoliate rst to get rid of that layer of dead skin, moisturizer wont penetrate, says Dr. Jaliman. Just dont overr do it, or you may irritate your skin and make matters worse. Use a scrub once or twice a week (avoid salt-based ones, which can be drying), and
then apply moisturizer immediately. Try: Nuance Salma Hayek Macadamia Nut Exfoliating Body Cleansing Scrub ($9, CVS).
Since I do my own manis and pedis at home, am I safe from nail infections?
A. No. While DIY exposes you to less risk than getting a nail job in a salon, using dirty tools can still
lead to a bacterial infection, which causes red, swollen, and painful skin around the nail bed, says Dr. Cassis. Even a seemingly innocuous nail le can harbor bacteria. Choose a crystal or stainless steel option (either can be washed), and wipe all your tools with rubbing alcohol or wash them in warm, soapy water after each use.
You cant rely on makeup alone. To get adequate sun protection, you have to apply an even coat all over your face, says Dr. Cassis. If you just put on foundation wherever you need coverage, you wont get an c even layer. Plus, makeup sits on skins top layer and wears o quickly, whereas a moisturizers chemical sunscreen is absorbed by skin, making it more eective. Use a moisturizer with SPF 30, such as First Aid Beauty 5 in 1 Face Cream ($38, Sephora), 365 days a year.

Q. If I incorporate antioxidants ants into my diet, do I need to apply them topically, too?
A. Yes. The antioxidants meant to be slathm environered on skin protect its surface from mental assaults like pollution, smoke, and the ment of sun, which contribute to the development ng; inwrinkles, spots, and other signs of aging; eeper into gesting antioxidants delivers them deeper i-aging the skin. If you do both, youll get anti-aging lains benets for all layers of the skin, explains o your Dr. Wu. Consider adding vitamin C to ty, ghting skin-care routineit does double duty, en producfree radicals and stimulating collagen tion. Try applying a serum, such as PCA Skin , derm C-Quench Antioxidant Serum ($74, eath your store.com), in the morning, underneath , diet-wise, moisturizer and/or sunscreen. November 2013
ITS probably not as bad as you think. When you fry, oil gets primarily into the e skin, not the meat itself. Assuming the skin (where re the saturated fat and extra calories lurk anyway) ) is removed before you eat it, fried turkey has only nly about 20 more calories per ounce than roastedor, or, in a three-ounce serving, about 60 more. But watch out for other calorie bombs on your plate. Its easy 00 big to eat your way through 3,000 ones during the Thanksgiving meal!

How I finally
FEEL GOOD
Even as a child,
I was an intense worrier. My mother was constantly anxious, which left me feeling like something terrible was always about to happen. Then, during my senior year of high school, something did: My father died of a heart attack, and just a few years later, my mother died of breast cancer. Shed had a lump in her breast for five years, but was too nervous to see a doctor until it was too late. Suddenly, my worst fears were being realized.
Ive always had lots of friends, and thanks to my seemingly together exterior, they never suspected anything. Plus, I was more than functioning: I graduated from college in 1979, lived abroad for seven years, and, after returning to New York City, started a successful educationalconsulting firm, helping families navigate the private-school admissions system.
My turning point
Things started to shift in my 30s. Id never felt a need to get married, but Id always wanted a child, and in 1996, I adopted my daughter, Arabella, from China. Strangely enough, I didnt worry for a minute about adopting on my own. I just knew it was right. Arabella isnt a worrier, and her calm demeanor, even as a little girl, made me think about my own habits. I started to see that if I spent my whole life worrying, I wouldnt have a life. I got off track after 9/11. Suddenly New York City felt like a really scary place to live. I stopped drinking tap water, thinking it could be poisoned, and I became so nervous about anthrax in the mail that I
Arabella has never been anxious like me. She was a calm li le girl, and as shes go en older, her steadiness has continued to inspire me.

When I get into a worry cycle, Ill say, Amanda, calm down! Youre annoying everyone
Turning it off
Shut up and get lost! Thats what a therapist taught me to tell the worried voice in my head. (I decided not to take medication because I felt it would only mask the problem.) Talking to myself really helped and still does. When I get a mammogram, for example, I repeat, This isnt cancer; its a test for cancer. And as Arabella got older, her steadiness continued to inspire me. Seeing bad things happen to other people always made me uneasy, but when Arabella was 7 and wanted to help kids with cancer, she never
expressed any fear of getting the disease herself. Then, one day when she was 11, she came home and said, Mom, you should become a Taoist. Throughout her childhood, Arabella studied Chinese culture and language, and she had become curious about Chinas religions. Im Jewish, but when your 11-year-old tells you to become a Taoist, you pay attention. I started reading about the ancient Chinese philosophy, which emphasizes taking life as it comes, day by day, and accepting what you cant change. That has really helped me approach life more calmly. The better Ive become at silencing my worries, the less life feels like an endless series of crises. Ill probably always be a little angsty, but I dont let my worry control me. For example, Im scared of flying, but I still get on airplanes. Bravery is a choice, and worriers can be brave, too.

A mom who developed an incurable brain tumor. A baby born with a fatal windpipe defect. A preschool teacher who had an unremitting intestinal infection. then 44, began to have headaches that quick ly went from bad to terrible. At first she blamed her schedule. Oh, I forgot to eat lunch, shed think. The marketing business she and her husband, Tommy, own near their La Crosse, WI, home was thriving, and Bridget also oversaw the school activities of their three children (11, 14, and 16 at the time) and took care of the family menageriefour horses, three dogs, three cats, fish, and a cockatiel. But one morning in early March, when the pain became so severe that Bridget started vomiting, her husband rushed her to the
emergency room. The physician ordered a CT scan. You know when three doctors and a social worker walk into your room, something isnt right, says Bridget. She had a brain tumor. Following a biopsy a week later, while Bridget was still unconscious, the neurosurgeon gave Tommy the news: Its a glioblastoma. Its inoperable and incurable. She has about a year to live. I dropped to my knees, Tommy says. You are going about your lifedoing things for your kids, running your businessand then you get blindsided by something like this. He decided not to tell Bridget what the

neurosurgeon had said: I was afraid if she heard that a doctor thought she was going to die in a year, it would turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy. Glioblastomas are the most common and most aggressive malignant said on the phone. Yes, theres a risk, he added, but he thought hed be able to remove the tumor without leaving Bridget paralyzed. The clinical trial involved ingenious gene therapy. The traditional treatment for these brain tumors is surgery, followed by radiation and chemotherapy. But too often, some cancer cells remain, leading to a recurrence. In the new approach, after removing the mass, doctors inject the gene of a virus into the tumor cavity tissue to make the cancer cells more receptive to an antiviral drug that the patient starts taking four days later. The drug makes the cancer cells more vulnerable to radiationwhich can then wipe them out more successfully. I felt absolutely blessed to be asked to join the study, Bridget says. The Hanchettes took a quick family trip to Florida, where they floated in the Lazy River and hand-fed exotic birds. Even if Bridget wasnt consciously afraid of dying, she decided to celebrate life by giving her kids memories to last a lifetime. Then, leaving the children with Tommys parents, Bridget and Tommy flew to California. There were so many pre-op tests over the next week that by April 14, the day of her surgery, Bridget was wiped out. But the second I woke up in the recovery roomeven though I was all bandaged and groggyI pulled up the sheets, she says. I had to see my feet. Finally, she got her left foot out: I could wiggle my toes up and down! They worked! Then, after dozing a bit, she did it again. For nurses. Doctors. My husband.

brain tumors. Without treatment, the median survival time for patients is short only a few months. With treatment, patients live an average of 15 months. But 90% of glioblastomas recur within two years. The doctor explained that Bridgets mass was located in an area of the brain that controlled her left leg. Surgery would probably paralyze that side of her body, and paralysis could make her too weak to withstand radiation and chemotherapy. Bridget had only one thought: Lets get a second opinion. A neurosurgeon/oncologist team at another medical center told her the same thing. But minutes after they walked into their house, reeling, from that visit, the couple got a third opinion. A doctor friend had recommended neurosu r ge on B eh n a m Ba d ie , M.D., director of the Brain Tumor Program at the City of Hope, a cancer and research center in Duarte, CA, and theyd had Bridgets scans sent to him. been working to figure out how to make artificial airway splints. They were using, of all things, a 3-D printer. The technology, often called additive manufacturing, sounds like the stuff of Star Trek. But the process was actually developed almost 30 years ago, and today it is used in manufacturing everything from airplanes to sneakers to orthopedic and dental implants. The how is pretty straightforward, at least for manufacturing: Designers make a pattern of the object they want to create on a computer; then, instead of using ink, a printer
prints thin layers of metal or plastic. For medical use, its more complicated: The scientists need to couple patient images (like CT or MRI scans) with special software. Also, 3-D printers are not made to work with biomaterials, so other adaptations have to be made. d Dr. Green and Hollister had had de success with a 3-D printer that made ricustom airway splints in lab experie in ments, but they had never tried one a human being. We were about a year ead away from getting the go-ahead rial, from the FDA to do a clinical trial, Dr. Green recalls. Then, on January 30, 2012, he got an e-mail from a doctor in Ohio telling him about an infant who needed a splint right away. The baby was not going to live unless something was done, the physician wrote. Doctors explained to the Gionfriddos that the procedure was entirely experimental, but we didnt have to think before saying yes, April says. They were giving Kaiba a chance.

Then came about an infinity of e-mails, Dr. Green says. But within just a few days, the team got clearance from the hospital and university review boards and from the FDA. On February 1, 2012, Kaiba was airlifted to C.S. Mott Childrens Hospital in Ann Arbor. A radiologist took a CT scan of his lungs, which Hollister used to generate a computer model of a splint that would exactly fit the baby. The splintcreated with a powder called polycaprolactone (dubbed friendly plastic because it is so easy to mold)wound up being about one and a half centimeters long and eight millimeters wide, and it looked a bit like a mini cigarette filter. Only eight days after Kaiba had arrived in Michigan, Dr. Green, along with cardiothoracic surgeon Richard Ohye, M.D., took Hollisters tiny object and attached it to Kaibas collapsed bronchus. Seconds later, we started seeing the lung inflate and deflate, Dr. Green says. It was so fabulous. People in the operating room were cheering. It was like magic, April remembers. He was going to dieand then he could breathe. Today, the 3-Dprinted splint functions as support scaffolding for Kaibas bronchusso for now, the safest course is for the 2-yearold to keep breathing through a tracheotomy. But within 24 months, the walls of Kaibas airway will grow

Thats when the Ashland, OH, preschool teacher went to her general practitioners office with a sore throat she couldnt kick. The doctor prescribed the antibiotic Augmentin. Kims throat infection went away, but she came down with diarrhea that didnt let up when she finished her prescription. All spring, Kim was running to the bathroom numerous times every morning before school. By summer, she was running to the bathroom up to 12 times a day. She also had a fever, pain, and blood in her stools, and in July, a lab test confirmed her doctors suspicion: Kim had Clostridium difficile, or C. diffa superbug that makes people sick when other bacteria in the intestine have been wiped out, often following a course

Kim tried various pharmaceutical cocktails, yogurt, probiotics, and even the old BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast)except bananas. I hate bananas. Like roughly one in five C. diff cases, hers kept coming back: Id try to eat only in the morning to control my symptoms during the day; in the fall, when school reopened, I brought extra clothes just in case. It was early 2013 when Kim turned to the doctor of the desperatethe Internet. There were all the drugs she had tried. There was intestinal removal. And then she found a description of something called fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). In plain terms, an FMT procedure involves putting a healthy persons stool into a sick persons large intestine so the bacteria from the normal feces can recolonize the intestine with the bacteria that have been wiped out. Despite how gross it sounded, on the Internet, it looked like a possible treatment because Id exhausted everything else, Kim says. the $800 tabconfirmed she would be a good donor. After suffering for months, Kim turned to the doctor of the desperate the Internet
It looked promising to the medical community, as well. In a recent University of Amsterdam study, FMTs had a 94% success rate for C. diff cases. But the FDA, deeming every transplant an investigational new drug that would require clearance, had put a severe restriction on the procedure in the U.S. Some desperate patients were doing it on their own at home. I had teenage children, a husband, and a life that was often only about pain, weakness, and bathrooms, Kim says. I was ready to try. Luckily, she got a referral to Razvan Arsenescu, M.D., Ph.D., medical director of the Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Program at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. He had just done his first FMTin the hospital and had permission from the FDA to do a second one. All Kim needed was a donor. The person didnt have to be related to her, just healthy, free of immune problems, and not on antibiotics in the previous six months. Her husband wasnt a candidate at the time, so she asked her friend Sarah, a nutritionist. Thats sort of in the medical field, so I thought the ick thing might not be so bad for her, Kim explains. Sarah said yes, and a blood test and stool samplenot covered by insurance, so Kim picked up
seriously, you have to bring your own unused blenderto the hospital. Its actually a simple procedure, like a colonoscopy, Dr. Arsenescu says. We dilute and mix the stool sample with saline, then f lush the liquid through the colon and into part of the small bowel. I woke up from the anesthesia, and they told me to take two Imodium, Kim says. That was it. And then it was a new world. No pills, no fevers, no night sweatsand intense training (with Sarah) for a charity triathlon on August 11. Having diarrhea doesnt sound bad, but for a year, it was very, very rough. It was such a struggle to be a mom and a wife and a teacher. And its embarrassing not to be able to control your own body. In July, FDA officials eased rules for performing fecal transplantations doctors must simply inform patients that the procedure is considered experimental. Kim is grateful to be among the small number whove had one. Now its like it all never happened, she says, except that my friend Sarah and I are closer than ever.

When I considered adding video to my blog, for example, I reminded myself that mastering the process would likely make me happier by broadening my definition of what I was capable of and leading to new relationships (see question 1). I confess that I still feel kind of goofy talking into the camera, but the reward has definitely been worth the effort.

often her friends would say to me, as they left, Were going to miss her pie. When asked aske for the recipe, Id explain that success with piecrust (the tricky part) is never wit about abo the recipe. Its not quite magic, but the mystery is best solved by standing at the elbow of a person who knows the trick of making good crust. Its all in how you handle ha the dough. Over the months and years that followed, I found that one of ye th more comforting things I could do the when I missed my mother was make a w pieor, p better yet, teach someone else to make one. I began a tradition of throwm i the doors of my home open a few ing times a year and hosting a pie party t w all pies going to the local homeless with shelter. Word spread, and soon strangers began showing up at my doorstep rolling pins in handfor the purpose of learning my mothers secret for flaky crust. One time, a man flew in from Los Angeles for the lesson. I want to share something with all of you, he said, now that weve shared in pie. He took out a deck of cards and shuffled them in the graceful way of a professional. Next, he asked a woman to pull a card from the deck. All but the magi magician could see that the card was the two of hearts. He returned it to the deck, then tossed all 52 cards in the air in such a way that he actually caught them. All but one. That card had landed on my ceiling, face out, so we could see: The two of hearts. Since then, Ive hosted a few dozen pie gatherings. The card is still there on my ceiling (a cathedral ceiling, incidentally). It always makes me happy, catching sight of it. And when I do, the person I think about more than the magician, whom I never saw againis my mother. Gone for 23 years now. Some people, seeing the card, want to know if Ive been tempted to inspect the back for traces of glue, or magnets. This is the last thing Id ever want to do, I tell them. I may love teaching people how to make my mothers piethe secret to which Ive now passed on to hundreds of bakersbut some forms of magic should remain wonderful mysteries. How that card stays on my ceiling is one. The enduring power of love, another.
Bakers Secret
The only real magic I know is this: Where there is pie, there is love
By Joyce Maynard
y mother was a brilliant and lovable woman, but not an easy person to have as a mom. About one of her gifts, though, I have never felt one shred of ambivalence: She baked a great pie. Crust was her specialty. When she was diagnosed with
inoperable brain cancer at age 66, there remained much unfinished business between us. I had always assumed wed have a few decades to work things out, but now that we didnt, nothing mattered more than to let her know how much I loved her. For my mother, a big part of loving and caring for a person involved making that person good food (from scratch)a trait we shared. And so one of the things I did a lot that summer was bake for her. Almost every day, I baked a pie that I served not simply to my mother but also to the friends who came by daily to see her and say goodbye. They couldnt speak of her dying, but

When you sign up for free with a minimum investment of $100 per month (any less, and you pay $3 per month in fees), youre asked questions about your time frame for retirement, goals, and risk tolerance. Youll receive a recommended portfolio of low-cost exchange-traded funds (known as ETFs, these are investment funds that are traded like stocks), which you can opt into, tweak, or bypass. Betterment also rebalances your money automatically if your portfolios allocations move too far away from your selected allocations. There are no extra monthly account fees or minimum investment requirementsyou pay only an annual asset-management fee, currently capped at 0.35%, and the ETF fees, which average 0.14%. Need to talk to a human? Itll be pricier, but communicating one-on-one with a person may help you make better investment choices. Personal capital.com can provide just that kind of advice from registered investment advisersover the phone, via e-mail, and through video chat. Theres no pushing product for commission here; fees are based on how much you invest, not where you put it. The cost is 0.95% per year when up to $250,000 is invested, and less if the amount is higher, versus the 1% to 2% of assets higherend financial planners charge.

Goodrx.com lets you compare prices at local pharmacies for thousands of medications. Just enter the name of your prescription drug and your zip code. Nab cobwebs along a chandeliers chain and arms with a long-handled duster; to wipe any crystals, use a cloth dampened with window cleaner followed by a dry one.

LOSE the RING! To remove the ghosts of beverages past, place a thick towel over the affected area, then press for 10 seconds with a warm, dry iron; lift to check progress and repeat. The dry heat will cause the finish to release trapped moisture.

Unpack your tablecloth and napkins a week or so prior to the meal to check for stains. If you find any, presoak the fabric for several hours in GHRI fave OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover ($8 for 3 lbs., drugstores), then wash at the highest recommended temperature no scrubbing required.
Freshen linens with a quick wash and dry, then pull from the dryer while still damp; iron with spray starch to make crisp. Short on time? Spread linens over pads on the table and spritz lightly with Downy Wrinkle Releaser ($5 for 16.9 oz., drugstores); tug out creases.
Scrape off excess candle drippings with a butter knife, then lay folded paper towels atop and below the area and go over it with a dry iron on low heat the wax will transfer to the paper towels. Repeat as necessary with new paper towels; run the cloth through the wash before using.

Hold the line
Mix and match, or get organized with just one
Dont use the pantry as a dumping ground for things like tools and cleaning suppliesthose items have a home elsewhere (and some arent safe to store near food!). Remove non-food-related items and keep em out.
2
Be ruthless
Youre wasting time if you have to paw through used-it-once ingredients and gadgets (hello, deep fryer from last century) every time you make dinner. Weed out anything you havent used in a year or two; toss it or donate it.
SORT IT OUT Foot pedals open these two trash compartments ($85, walmart.com)

Bulk purchases seem like a bargain, but if it takes a year to get through that tub of iced-tea mix, the lost shelf space may outweigh the savings. At the very least, decant large quantities into smaller vessels and stash the extra up high.

I have moths in my closetshow can I get rid of them without a chemical pesticide? I have two cats and dont want to use anything that could hurt them.
JUNE WILLIAMS, VIA E-MAIL
House Call
Heloise phoned Chris Mrsich of Haverstraw, NY, who asked via e-mail:
can try, but first you need to be sure you get rid of the moths that are there. Empty out your entire closet, shake out all the clothes (outside!), and dry-clean everything or wash and dry on the highest temperature that is safe for the fabric. Next, wipe down the shelves and baseboards with a solution of a few drops of dish soap in a moth hs gallon of water. Then, so the moths wont come back, seal up all cracks and other areas where they might enter. You can buy dried lavender, a natural moth repellent, at a cra f t st ore or online and use it to make sachets, which shouldnt bother your cats. I also add black pepper to mineits an old, old hint to help ward off moths and other bugs.

scrub paint off our hands, and leather is skin, too! Pour a teaspoon of oil into your palm, add some salt to make a paste, and test in a not-so-noticeable place. With your finger, rub in circles in one direction, then in the other, to gently remove the paint. Still there? Dip a cotton swab in acetone nailpolish remover; test on a hidden sprinkle. If it works, do more. Wipe with a damp cloth to remove residue.
the stopper in the sink, place the cookie sheets there, and pour boiling water in to cover them. Let sit until the water cools. Then remove, sprinkle dishwashing detergent over the grease spots, and use a scrubbie sponge specifically designed for nonstick cookware to rub them away. If that doesnt do the trick, you can also try covering the areas with a paper towel, pouring on a little ammonia (a grease cutter), and placing the sheet in a plastic bag to contain the fumes while it rests overnight. The next morning, open in a wellventilated area; scrub with dish soap and a scrubbie sponge, then rinse well. HOW IT WORKE D The detergent worked. It looks so much better. Now, if someone wants to borrow my cookie sheets, I wont be embarrassed!

sinks require a bit of continual care to look their best. Im constantly wiping down my fridge to banish fingerprintsand nose prints from Cabbie, our mini schnauzer! Starting with a small area, try rubbing in some cream silver polish or even white toothpaste; go with the grain of the steel, not side to side. Then wipe with a damp cloth (water only), dry well, and take a look. If you see progress, move on to the rest. When finished, use whatever cleaner or polish is recommended by the manufacturer. Or try my old standby: baby (or mineral) oil. Dab just a little on a paper towel or soft cloth to go over the entire surface area; follow up with a clean cloth to polishthat should help to make the marks less noticeable.
I KNOW just what you mean; I use dry shampoo occasionally, and it does tend to leave some bunnies behind. What I do is run a comb (or an extra brush) through the brush to clean out hair and gunk. If you have more time, you can wash the brush rather quickly by pouring a small blob of shampoo on the bristles, running it under water, and rubbing with your fingers, a comb, or another brush to loosen whats stuck. Rinse well, shake, and place, with bristles down, on a hand towel to air-dry. Another quick fix: Pour a little rubbing alcohol on the brushitll dissolve the gunkand then run a comb through it. Thats it! The alcohol will dissipate in a few minutes, so the brush will be as good as new.
Heloise, help! I just spilled non-acetone nailpolish remover on my wood coee table and ruined the nish. Is there anything I can do to save it?
THE NOT-SO - GOOD NEWS: Other than refinishing the whole table, there really isnt a home remedy. However, you can try to darken and even out the places where the finish came off. First, dip a cotton swab into the same remover and gently feather the area around the spot so there is no major line of demarcation. Then try a trick I learned from my mother: Mix up some instant coffee (use just enough hot water to make a thick paste) and spoon it over the area you are trying to fix. Use a microfiber cloth to rub it in, going with the grain of the wood, and let set for several hours to stain the wood. Wipe up using paper towels, then buff dry with a clean cloth.

The Barefoot Contessas foolproof menu of simple, elegant dishes (and her genius 10-step game plan)
THANKSGIVING IS JUST MY FAVORITE MEAL! beams Ina Gartena.k.a. the Barefoot Contessa, as fans of her TV shows and cookbooks know her. But that doesnt mean her feast is a complicated affair. I use simple recipes, she says. Im not a trained professional chef. Im just a good home cook whos had a lot of experience in the food business. To prove that point, Garten has assembled for GH a no-stress but superb meal, from her savory Marcona Almonds to her famous Apple Crostataan easy alternative to pie. (Garten is all about fuss-free these days; her Barefoot Contessa line of saut-and-serve frozen dishes debuted this year.) So get ready for the Thanksgiving of your dreamsone during which you can relax and enjoy the day, though the food tastes as if you were up cooking it all night.

Our Triple-Test Promise
In our test kitchens at the Good Housekeeping Research Institute, we create recipes that are familyfriendly, healthy, and easy. We test each recipe at least three times:
A GH recipe developer prepares the dish and presents it to the food team. We decide if it meets our high standards of deliciousnessbut thats just the beginning. For example, weeknight meals should take 30 minutes or less to make. The same person tests the recipe several more times to ne-tune it, using the same equipment. Another team member prepares the recipe as written, varying the brands of equipment and ingredients. (She may do this several timesusing an electric stove instead of gas, a lighter-weight pan, Hunts versus Del Monte tomatoes.) Note: All microwave tests are done in 1,000-watt ovens. If yours has a dierent wattage, you may need to adjust the cooking time. A third team member repeats the process using yet another set of equipment and alternative ingredients. By the time the recipes appear in GH, they are guaranteed to work on any range, with any brands of equipment and ingredients, in any kitchen. We promise.

Surprise: This super-aordable concentrate took top honors. The broth made with it tasted a little salty, yet still fresh, familiar, and redolent of carrots and celery.
Tasters loved the slightly sweet avor of this concentrated stock, which takes only seconds to dissolve in boiling water. Bits of veggies and herbs add to the homemade taste.
Unlike some other samples, which tasters equated to salt bombs, this broth had great avor and was just salty enough, making it ideal for a variety of dishes. Really, really, really good was one emphatic review.

A friend brought me fresh white cornmeal from South Carolina. How can I use it?
ELAINE BOWEN, BAXTER, MN
LUCKY YOU! FRESHLY GROUND CORNMEAL has fabulous f lavor and can be used interchangeably with yellow cornmeal in recipes. Theyre both made from varieties of field corn, though white cornmeal is the classic choice for Southern cornbread made in a cast-iron skillet. (For my favorite recipe, go to goodhousekeeping.com /cornbread.) Worth noting: Cornmeal can become rancid in warm temperatures, so refrigerate or freeze it if youre not using it within a month; itll keep for up to a year.

IFESOLUTIONS 24 - HOUR
Self-Storage was located by an otherwise farmy and intermittently wooded stretch of two-lane near the New York border. With its overexpanse of parking, its high, barbwirecrested fencing, and its excessive security lighting, it brought to mind a small-scale penitentiary. Sara Tetwick Masoli was there to retrieve a roasting pan and maybe also (if she could gure out which box it was in) the china from her rst marriage, but the process plugging in her security code at the gate; plugging it in again on the keypad by the door; traversing the long, uorescently lit hallway, her echoing heel-clicks as loud as ricocheting bullets, to Unit 592made her mission feel weightier. She unbolted the thick brass lock and raised the overhead door. Oh, my, she said. She hadnt remembered the awesome bulk of it. Everything had been pushed toward the back of the 10' by 15' unit, for which shed been paying $59 per month for seven years, so it sloped upward from where Sara, feeling like an irresolute mountaineer, stood. She considered bailing on the whole chorethat was why they made disposable roasting pans, right? And the china, like everything from her rst marriage, was tainted anyway. Honey, she said to herselfin the weirdly over-colloquial and vaguely black/ Southern voice she often used when addressing herself in moments of indecision, as if she were equipping herself with her own personal Oprahyou can bail on this. But no, she decided. I cant. Its just stuff. Get over it, honey. Start digging. At 43, a mother of a teenager and a widow (she wondered if she wasnt a former widow, now that shed remarriedbut that seemed oxymoronic, like being a former amputee), something of the cheerleader Sara had been, back in Ohio, still clung to her: in the eln gleam of her smile, in the nervous utter of her laugh, and in the wheaty, sunlit color of her hairthe shade of blond youd see, chemically replicated, on women idling away their afternoons at the mall. Saras was natural, howeverthe inheritance from the Anglos and Saxons

whod seeded her family tree. Her daughter, Alexis, used to say it smelled like apples or maybe celery. Something you eat peanut butter with. Her figure, short and supple, was not quite as naturala point of mild discomfort for her. Throughout her life shed never minded her small breastsdainty little knolls, no bigger than ice cream scoops, which disappeared completely under the gentle compression of a sports bra. Or at least shed thought shed never minded them. Her husband, Dave, who owned a successful debt-collection business, had suggested otherwise. A bit of surgical augmentation (his Valentines Day gift to her) would provide an incommensurate boost to her selfesteem, hed said. She still wasnt used to them. But Dave liked them. She supposed that was good, but a part of her didnt like his liking them. For years, since before her first marriage, to Brian, Sara had gravitated toward women who, like her, gravitated toward men in nance, but shed never felt she was one of them. Shed lived in Prague; shed had a decent, if stunted, acting career in her 20s (the unbalanced high points: her role as Anya in an off-Broadway revival of The Cherry Orchard and her appearance in a commercial for Coast soap in which, lathered in a shower, shed cooed, Ooooh, that scent!); and recently shed spent summer weekends working a cooperative farm share: She was different. But her upgraded breasts said otherwise. They introduced her before she could open her mouth, establishing (in her mind) the subjects of discussion: money and sex, both of which she found uninteresting, or maybe just overworn. If I were a roasting pan, she said to herself, where would I be? In response, the piled boxes merely stared back at her, unblinking. She hadnt visited the unit in yearswhy would they recognize her? She moved the topmost boxes that were closest to her from right to left, noting the brief descriptions of their contents written in blue Sharpie ink. alexis: dolls.

The great sin of parenting, Sara felt, was letting your children aim too low. Allow them to settle, and thats just what theyd do. Loose expectations were like junk food; kids just gorged themselves on them. her feet to make room, she opened the box marked brian. A picture of his face was the rst thing she saw: impossibly square-jawed, with those hard Clint Eastwood eyes above that overly cocky grin, a dimpled halfWindsor knot at the base of that thick, not-quite-loutish neck. The box contained a citrus zester; a stainless steel cocktail shaker etched with the words MarketBolt Annual Meeting, The Scottsdale Princess, Scottsdale, AZ, August 1014, 2001; a pigtail-corded handheld blender; some individual tart pans; an analog meat thermometer; and a white apron emblazoned with the words Worlds Best Mom, never worn (never even unfolded from the crisp square it had come packaged in). It was nothing she needed. She ngered the apron, its virginate starchiness, its embroidered sentiment. She almost snorted at the idea of Alexiss giving it to her nowat the implausibility of it. Alexis would likely just bookmark the title with asterisks, the way she noted sarcasm in her text messages: *worlds best mom* whatever. At 17, Alexis was at the age when mothers come into view as tyrants or imbecilesor both. Just the night before, she and Alexis had had it out over college applications, over Alexiss mulish determination to attend Varick, where her father had gonealong with every other Long Island meathead who

She replaced the apron, moved on. What caught her eye, on the next box she lifted, was the handwriting. brian, it read, in unfamiliar blue cursive, and for a moment she failed to make sense of it. But then she remembered: Her sister Liz had packed up all of Brians stuff for her. I dont want to see it, Sara had told her. I dont want to have it; I dont want it near me. But Alexis might, Liz had said, adding gently, someday.

crispy than shed have thought it could be: It was his obituary, from the Portraits in Grief series the New York Times had run after September 11. Brian Tooney, the headline read. A Winner in Life, and Love. Brian Tooney hated to lose. Whatever the game, be it Monopoly or one-onone basketball or his latest passion, golf, he usually only lost once. And that was always the rst time he played, said his older brother, Robert. After that, hed hunker down somewhere to practice until he had everything down cold. Then hed come back and stomp you. That competitive streak made Mr. Tooney, who was 34, a natural t for Wall Street. He worked as a bond broker for MarketBolt, in the World Trade Center. He loved the charge of it, said his wife, Sara. On their second date, the couple bumped into a notyet-old ame of Mrs. Tooneys at a midtown bar. Mr. Tooney, shed later learn, tipped a waiter to accidentally spill a drink on the competing suitor, forcing him to beat a quick retreat from the bar. But Mr. Tooney had a soft side, too. His 10-year-old daughter, Alexis, brought it out in him most. If she scraped her knee and cried, his wife said, he cried, too. Almost every night, before bedtime, Mr. Tooney and his daughter danced together, usually to a Bruce Springsteen song. Thunder Road, Mrs. Tooney said, was their favorite.
the unit for her; it was she whod done the initial piling, which Sara, over the years, had supplemented with boxedup obsoletisms (like the zester, which had been displaced by a microplane). With a small huff, Sara transferred the box leftward in order to keep digging for the roasting pan, and then she paused. That had been seven years agoseven years and two months. And now she had Dave: the satisfying epilogue, the closure everyone had urged her to seek. She bit her bottom lip. Something drew her nearer to the boxsome archaeological allure, like uncovering a time capsule while digging in the garden. But this was her life, or shards of it, dumped into cardboard squares. What harm could there be in opening it at this post-closure point? Sighing, she sat dow n on the kitchen box, its top crumpling slightly beneath her weight, and after sliding some other boxes away with

the natural source. His constant stream of e-mail forwardsNew York Giants scuttlebutt, mostly, but also chain letters (typical Irish, he was superstitious to the point of paranoia) must have been sent regularly to a hundred or more addresses. It was password-protected, but that part was easy: Alexis. As Sara scrolled through his inbox, averting her eyes from the text of the e-mails to avoid conjuring Brians voice, she kept seeing one name over and over. On September 8, she noticed, there was a solid block of maybe 20 e-mails from a Jane L. Becker. her e-mail address, Jane L. Becker worked at Lehman Brothers; theyd met at a high-yield bond conference uptown) to the rst awkward postcoital note ( Are you OK? Im really sorry if things got a little too, um, crazy last night. Call me?) to the operatic, full-blown declarations that followed (I had no idea what love was until I met you. I feel like Dorothy discovering Oz) to the reams of hypersexed e-blather that caused Sara, weeping, holding back her hair, to vomit into the wastebasket under the desk (whatever it is you do with your tongue, kiddo, you should patent it).
The family had just moved, in June, to rural Sussex County, NJ, because Mrs. Tooney dreamed of raising horses. The commute was a killer, his brother Robert said. But if Sara wanted to raise penguins, he wouldve commuted from the South Pole. Thats the kind of guy he was. For a long time Sara stared at the newspaper, her eyes darting from the text to the photograph and back, as if struggling to reconcile them. She heard the faint creak of her front teeth grinding. Finally, she said, F--- you, Brian. And then it came back, as shed feared (when setting that box aside) but hadnt quite expected (when opening it). All of it: the initial splinter of that morning (Liz calling, saying, Turn on the TV); the way Sara had collapsed to the oor, rubbery and boneless, in perfect terrible tandem with the second towers collapse; Alexis in pigtails screaming Someone tell me! while Sara and Brians mother clung to each other in the living room, both of them incapable of speech; Brians fathers vigil in front of CNN, a single omnipresent tear trickling down his old prizeghters cheek; the 400 missing posters theyd printed at Staples, and the clerk who had glanced about for her manager before telling Sara there was no charge, go; the bobbing sea of yellow candles in Union Square; the smoke from the islands charred tip that went on and on, forever. All of which had felt endurable compared to what, for Sara, had come afterward. Brians brother Robert had suggested the memorial. He offered to rent out A.J. Byrnes, the bar on 52nd Street where Brian had taken Sara on their second date and where Brian and Robert had had a standing date, for Monday Night Football, during the NFL season. Invite everyone, Bass Ale (Brians regular) on the house, maybe have a slide show if they could all bear it. Thats what Bri wouldve wanted, Robert had said, and Sara had agreed. All Robert needed, he said, was an invitation list; hed do the rest. Brians Outlook address book struck Sara as
Sara ried in the box guardedly, with just two ngers of her left hand, as if fearful of an insect attack
That Saturday, she remembered (because the days leading up to that Tuesday were engraved upon her memory), shed taken Alexis to her soccer game and then to a matinee of The Princess Diaries, and Brian had stayed home to catch up on work. When she saw the block of e-mails, she wasnt so much suspiciousat that time, Brian was the winged angel she spoke to in the dark, the vaporous essence suffusing the pillow that she fell asleep spo on i ng e ver y n ig ht a nd t hat sponged her 4 A .M. tearsas she was curious about the abundance. So, randomly, she double-clicked on one of Jane L. Beckers Saturday-afternoon e-mails, which read: I am completely worthless without you inside me. Seriously. I cant eat or sleep or work out or ANYTHING. What have you DONE to me, Brian Tooney?
to say she was stunned, as Sara would later tell her sister, trivialized the sensationthe overwhelming, airless, corporeal suck of it. Her stupor was so total that she didnt even register pain. Fortied by numbness, though aware she was making a spectacular mistake, Sara read, then printed out, ever y last one of Jane L . Beckers e-mails to Brianfrom the earliest irty messages (according to
Precisely why she was printing them, she didnt know, but she felt a pressing need to marshal hard, physical evidencemultipurpose, 8" by 11", 20-lb., 94-brightness evidenceto be collected and analyzed for some unimaginable but imperative prosecution. When Alexis woke up for school the next morning, she found her mother at the desk, never having slept, the overheating printer still whirring out page after page. As for Brians e-mails to Jane L. She didnt quite recognize the voice of the Brian whod authored themhis collected love letters to Sara, all of them predating their wedding, would have filled ve pagessix, topsand for a brief, dizzying moment, slipping off the plane of reality as if stumbling off a curb, Sara wondered if it hadnt been her Brian whod written all thisif some intergalactic mix-up might have occurred and this was another Brian Tooneys computer she was digging through. a bottle of warm Chardonnay she emptied after tucking Alexis into bed, she e-mailed Jane L. Becker. From Brians e-mail account: Imagining Jane L. Beckers expression when his name appeared in her inbox churned Saras stomach with a toxic mixture of grief and glee. The TV in the study was tuned to CNN, on mute; that single portrait of the hijacker Mohammed Atta kept appearing on-screen, in what seemed like an endless loop. Yet somehow the sight of his face didnt rattle her. She didnt want to study it or spit at it. Mohammed Atta had murdered her husband; Jane L. Becker, on the other hand, had murdered her. Sara e-mailed her a single question: Why did you do thi s to me? At 11:49 P.M., three nights later, Jane L. Becker replied. All I can say is that Im sorry, she wrote. I am. He loved you. That nal sentence wounded her worst of all, because it was a lie even now, with Brian dead, with nothing whatsoever to be lost or gained, Jane L. Becker, this woman she knew only as a febrile swarm of words and emoticons, was lying to her. Because hadnt Brian written to her, over and over, in terse but tortured e-mailese, that he didnt love his wife (Sara was never Sara in his e-mails, only my wife ), that he was no longer in love with her, had conceivably never loved her (if you dened love as what he felt for Jane L. Becker)? After another bottle of Chardonnay, this one properly chilled, Sara wrote Jane L. Becker
unwilling to scrub the stains from it, to preserve the salvageable portions, shed justchucked it. When she and A lexis v isited Brians parents in Oradell, NJ, it was as if Sara was bringing A lexis to visit fond old neighbors, or relatives so distant that it stressed the brain to map the familial tiesand whenever Mr. Tooney brought up his lost son or fetched the old photo albums for Alexis, Sara would ee to the kitchen to remove herself, bodily, from the connection. In Saras carefully structured mind, Mr. and Mrs. Tooney were not quite Alexiss grandparents; they were vague obligations, suppliers of corned beef and hugs. It demanded erce mental acrobatics, this blotting of memory, but Sara had found it necessary. To do otherwise would have required confronting that inside-out world, or sifting through her 12 years with Brian to pan the truth from the lies without a single means of verifying which was which. Hed died, and then shed killed him. It had been the only way.
with an affected casualness, her body taut and angled, Sara ried deeper in the boxbut guardedly, with just two ngers of her left hand, as if fearful of an insect attack or some other, less palpable danger. The organization of the boxs contents was rhymeless, reasonless, reecting Lizs haste and her unfamiliarity with what shed been forced to stockpile: one of Brians high school yearbooks (where were the rest?); loose photographs

from disparate periods (Brian and Sara on the dance oor at Megan and Roberts weddingBrian voguing some comic disco pose and Saras hands clasped, her face elongated with laughter; Brian and Robert as sunburned teens, sitting in a canoe and making growly faces at the camera; Brian at the zoo with Alexis on his shoulders, a mushy Popsicle tangled in his hair; and Brian in his rst office, grinning, his feet on his desk, an unlit cigar between his teeth); a folded, unread copy of the Times, the inclusion of which made no sense to Sara until she checked the date (April 18, 1991: Alexiss birth); two MetroCards and a New York Giants ticket stub; and, deeper in the box, a clear plastic tube lled with collar stays, a felt box containing all of Brians cuff links, and a bottle of 212 by Carolina Herrera, his cologne. She swirled the bottle and stared at it. Why on earth had Liz saved it? Thoughtlessly, Sara spritzed her inner wrist, then brought it to her nose. Regretting this instantly, she rubbed at her wrist to erase it. She knew why Liz had thought to preserve it, and the realization pricked her. Liz thought she might want him back. Someday, as Liz had said, so softly. Unfolding a manila folder shed out from near the bottom, Sara frowned: Here was the playbill from Fosse, the Broadway show theyd seen together in 1998, when Brians mother had babysat Alexis and theyd spent the night at a hotel in the city; that evening had been a marital high point, and theyd even made love, again, the next morning, giggling like teens at their childless freedom. This time, with a faint roiling of her stomach, she didnt wonder about Lizs motiveswhy had Brian saved it? And here was the invitation Brian had designed for Saras 30th birthday, a surprise partyat the top were six head shots of Sara, scissored out of photos: Sara as a child, as a teen, as a backpacker in Europe, and so on. (Shed found one of the decapitated photos beforehand and, disturbed, confronted Brian. Something we need to discuss? shed asked dryly.) Here, too, was the room service menu from the hotel in Barbados where theyd spent their honeymoon. And their wedding invitation. And a clipping, 19 years old, from the Post s lukewarm rev iew of The Cherry Orchard, her maiden name proudly underlined. Confused, and stung by the parallels between this manila folder and her memory of another one the one shed lled with that awful dossier of Jane L. Beckers e-mails Sara dumped it all back into the box and sloppily resealed its cardboard aps. Enough, she said to herself, cursing herself for having opened it in the rst place. Scanning the boxes around her, she felt cornered by the blue writing on their sides, the letters seeming to glow and throb with an almost menacing exigence. brian:

prised Sara, this realizationthat Brian was here, in this climatecontrolled tombclawed at her, pushing her back out into the hallway. When a door opened at the end of the hall, shattering the quiet and admitting a cold squall of outside air, she emitted a sharp, brief shriek, clutching a hand to her chest. From down the hall, a short, round man in a bulky black overcoat stared at her. Sorry, he said, waving. We didnt mean to scare you. Sara waved back with a pageantlosers synthetic smile. Just startled. This was a mistake, Sara scolded herself. This entire errand. She should have known betterbut how? Shed just wanted her roasting pan. After rolling the units door back down and relocking it, she held the door to the outside open while the man, followed by a morose, lanky teen, hauled in a white dresser of the disposable berboard variety sold at IKEA. Thanks a lot, the man said, gasping for breath as he squeezed past her. Put it down over here, Bobby. The teen didnt acknowledge her as he passed, save for the furtive, appreciative glance he gave her breasts. For a moment, she stared at the dresser: at its chipped edges, and at the faint wrinkles and blisters in its veneer, puzzling over why they were interring it here. It was certainly no keepsake. When she glanced at the man for a clue, he was bent over with his hands on his knees, as if defeated by the task. Something in that pose made her wonder if the dresser had belonged to yet another dead pharaoh, and if they were bringing it there to be entombed like Brians golf trophies. She noticed
a sticker of a pink unicorn affixed to one of the drawers and, with a shudder of dark imagining, wondered if the man had lost a daughter. Something Alexis had mentionedabout one of her classmates ipping her car on Route 94 the weekend beforecame reeling back into her head. And when she looked again, the boys torpid, bored expression appeared to her mournful instead, an adolescent/macho mask obscuring torrents of confused grief beneath it, and the man appeared not just defeated but crushed, his limp neck suggesting an imminent, weepy collapse. Flooding with pity, she released the door and moved two hesitant steps toward the manto help him with his load or perhaps, if indeed he crumpled, even embrace him. But when he lifted his head, revealing a wide grin spreading across his face, his cheeks as round and red as Gala apples, she immediately realized her error. Hey, Bobby, he said to the boy, casting a curious sidelong glance at Sara hovering just inside the doorway. Do your dad a favor, willya? Never get fat. I mean, look at meI gotta sit down. The kids whod accidentally started Th the fire turned themselves in early on, with their parents beside them. Then wit firefighter wrote a letter to the local a fi paper, about how carefully the boys pap had tried to put out the fire. The ha flames had been extinguished, but fla embers were still burning underem ground. The boys hadnt known this gr could be a fire danger. Theyd left. co After that, even as townspeople continued to share their loss and c p pain, they also told stories of their w worst teenage mistakes and transg gressions. We rarely think our way o out of these tight, dark places. S ome t i me s a s a c om mu n it y, t though, we take an action together, and somehow something gives. A picnic was held to honor the f iref ighters. The whole tow n turned out. The president of the boa rd of f iref ighters gave a speech, but at the very end, he dig digressed from what you might have expected him to say. He talked about how in ancient times, people who did damage to a town were sent to live outside its walls, beyond community, beyond inclusion and protection. He mentioned the four young men who had started the f ire, and that he had heard that their families were thinking of moving away. His opinion was that the town should make it clear to the families that they should stay, that they were wanted, that they were needed. There was sustained applause. People whose houses had burned down came up to say they agreed with this plan. The town wanted these young men inside the ring of protection. When you see a community coming together after a catastrophe, the round-the-clock efforts to save whatever can be saved, you realize the secret of life is patch patch patch. Thread your needle, make a knot, find one place on the other piece of torn cloth where you can make one stitch that will hold. And do it again. And again. And again.

learned that people are impossible, even the ones we love le m mostespecially the ones we love most. Theyre prickly and set in their ways. So we keep our distance, at one with a o our own thoughts. Still, hope tends to appear when we see that all sorts of disparate personalities can come tos g gether. Only together do we somehow keep coming through seemingly unsurvivable i losschanged but intact. Fifteen years ago, there was a devastating fire on the long, majestic ridge above the coastal town where my family used to go for seafood dinners. Four teenage boys from town had camped on the mountain overnight, illegally, had built a campfire, buried it under dirt when they left in the morningand caused a blaze that destroyed 12,000 acres of wilderness area and nearly 50 homes. Helicopters saved the others by dropping water on the forest between town and the burning ridge. The loss of wildlife was unimaginable. It was as if a bomb had fallen.
