Objectives:
TSW gain an understanding as teacher models examples of adding fractions TSW work together with a partner to complete mathematic problems TSW be able to add like and unlike denominators TSW be able to reduce fractions into proper form and identify factors to be able to add unlike denominators.

Materials/Equipment:

Like Denominator and Unlike Denominator Worksheets for student pairs.

Lesson Plan:
TEKS Achieved:

Introduction (Anticipatory Set/Motivation): We will be learning how to add fractions together but there are some difficulties along the way we might in counter but today you will learn how to add fractions together no matter which number is in the denominator Process: 1. Can anyone tell me what the denominator is? (Student Reply) 2. A denominator is the number on the bottom of a fraction: model for students 3. While the numerator is the number on the top of the fraction: model for students 4. Can anyone tell me which one of these must be equal in order to add another fraction together (Student Reply) 5. The Denominator must be equal on both fractions in order to add them together example 2/5 + 1/5 = 3/5 or 2/5 + 3/10= 4/10+ 3/10= 7/10 6. Model a few extra problems for students 3/7 +2/7 = 5/7 3/6 + 1/6= 4/6 Can anyone tell me what it means to simplify a fraction? One way to find the simplest form of a fraction is to divide the numerator and the denominator of the fraction by the greatest common factor. So 4/6 can be simplified to 2/3 by dividing both the numerator and denominator by a common factor of 2. Simplify: 8/12

2A teacher will model addition and subtraction situations involving fractions with objects, pictures, words, and numbers 6 Grade Math 2B students will use addition and subtraction to solve problems involving fractions and decimals

Assessment/Evaluation:
Students will then work in pairs to complete the like and unlike denominator worksheets together with their partners.
