Resumen de la unidad
In this Project, the students are going to analyze the importance of technology and how communication inventions have arrived in the right time to make our lives easier. Since our students were born on a technological world, they are going to clearly understand the difference in communication when their parents were children or teenagers and the situation they face nowadays. For doing this, they are going to come up with examples of the different means of communication that they use in their homes. Classes must be filled with activities such as brainstorms, debates, discussions, questions and answers, videos, and realia. As a matter of fact, at the end of the project the students are going to use different programs such as Prezi, Montage, Deep Zoom, and Weebly, among others to present their discoveries. Within these activities the students are going to realize the importance of communication and technology in our society. They are going to be able to talk about communication in the past and communication in the present. And, as a further activity, they can talk about what they think communication in the future will be.

Classifying communication inventions, and illustrating them. Assembling a timeline of communication inventions (traditional and modern) Interviewing someone who grew up before the invention of the internet. Then ask them to list five major changes that the internet has brought about in daily life.

Resumen de evaluaciones
We are going to assess the students through different activities. First of all, we need to establish the different means of communication the students and their families use in a daily basis. For this activity, we are going to assess oral questions through a brainstorm. After that, they need to focus on the different devices they use to communicate. Our main goal is that our students present all this information by using the different tools they learned about. For instance, the computer lab, their cell phones, computer programs (Prezi, Montage, Deep Zoom, C map tools, among others. To assess the beginning, development, and finished project, we are going to use rubrics, brainstorm activities, interviews, graphic organizers, charts, and group work presentations.

To begin the unit, the students must know how to use the computer, including searching the web and using different tools to present their work. It is important to have access to the internet, so they can do the research in class.

Procedimientos
What is communication? The first thing we are going to do is to have a brainstorm activity about the topic. The students are going to come up with answers about the meaning of communication. As a group, the students are going to mention the different technological tools that make communication a dream come true for persons like their parents and neighbors. In this way we are going to realize the previous knowledge the students have about communication and technology. To clarify all the doubts and answer their own questions, they are going to watch a video about communication. After having watched the video, they are going to find the answers to their questions. What are means of communication? The students will come up with new ideas about the technological world and the new trends in communication; the way their parents and the people they know used to communicate in the past, and the way they communicate in the present. As a result, they are going to balance these ideas with an interview they are going to make at home and in the neighborhood. What are some ways humans communicate? There are some videos in which the students can observe the different gadgets people use to communicate. For instance, students using I pads, laptops, and cell phones at school. They can list the advantages and disadvantages of some of these means of communication. What were some means of communication in ancient times? To have a better understanding of the topic, the students are going to watch different videos about the origins of communication. In this way they are going to internalize the different concepts and important facts about communication in the past. We must remember that our students are digital natives, while we are digital immigrants. For this reason, they need to know more about communication in the past. How do we classify the different means of communication? When they have all the information, they are going to create a brochure about the topic. This is going to be done in the classroom, under the teachers supervision. This is going to be part of the collaborative work in class. Then, they are going to role play different situations in which people use their gadgets to communicate. For doing this, they are going to work in groups of two or three and when they come up with the conversation, they are going to role play the best conversation during the civil act. To conclude the project, the whole group is going to be divided into five groups. Each group is going to develop the topic by using different programs and tools. After having the project ready, the groups are going to present it to the sixth graders. In this way, the knowledge will be acquired not just by the fifth graders, but also by their fellow partners.

Adaptaciones curriculares
The students with special needs are going to work along with the leader of the group. In this case, the special needs student is going to work as an assistant, providing more confidence to the student and a help for the leader. Besides this, our student with special needs is going to have a modified homework that he/she will develop with the help of the teacher of special needs children (DIFA or IPHE). This kind of work might include coloring online, matching activities, and using one Power Point to create a presentation of their own. Students who do not speak Spanish are going to work in class as the teachers aide. In this way they are going to feel that they can help the teacher and his/her fellow classmates. Moreover, this student can enrich all the classes by providing information or anecdotes about the way they are taught in his / her place of origin.

On the other hand, the other students are going to take advantage of the situation by practicing English with a native speaker (in case the student is from the United States).

The talented students are going to work further. They can develop a more challenging activity, such as an extra research and present it to his/her classmates. Besides this, they can monitor what the rest of the students are doing in class, and in this way they can work faster
