Test two for LI814 Fall 2012 Due Dec. 3, 2012 11:59 PM

Part 1 SHORT ANSWERS (10 total points)

Give two (2) MARC format subject headings to each of the following five items. Tell me why you used those subject headings. 1 point for the subject headings, 1 point for your explanation. 1. Provenance : How a Con Man and a Forger Rewrote the History of Modern Art. A tautly paced investigation of one the 20th century's most audacious art frauds, which generated hundreds of forgeries-many of them still hanging in prominent museums and private collections today. 650 $a Art $x Forgers. 650 $a Swindlers and swindling. I first searched art fraud and it came up with Art-French. I decided to just randomly search through the Art section and see what I could find. The first thing I hit on was Art-Forgeries (may subdivide geographically). I thought that fit pretty well with this book. Next I found Art-forgers, I picked this one because it saysa con man and forger, which makes me think that it is about the actual perpetrators. The next thing I searcher was con man which did not come up. I tried confidence men and it said Use Swindlers and Swindling. I wasnt sure about that one, so I decided to search counterfeit. It said Use counterfeits and counterfeiting. When I looked at that entry more closely, it said a narrower term was Art-Forgers. I decided Swindlers and Swindling was the better fit.

2. NBA Coaches Playbook : Techniques, Tactics, and Teaching Points. Takes you into the practice sessions and sideline huddles with detailed Xs and Os and more from the game's best at maximizing performance on the court. Let the likes of Phil Jackson, Avery Johnson, and many other head and assistant coaches provide you with new insights to benefit your own team and individual players. 650 $a Basketball $x Coaches. 650 $a Physical education and training. I think the first one is self-explanatory. I searched basketball and a list came up. I thought coaches was the best choice. The second was a bit trickier. I searched through all the basketball topics and found nothing that I liked. Then I looked up training and searched through until I found physical education and training. It fits.

Test two for LI814 Fall 2012 Due Dec. 3, 2012 11:59 PM 3. LIS Career Sourcebook. This book provides an overview of key career stages and strategies, and identifies for each the best information resources to help readers develop a successful LIS career. 650 $a Career development. 650 $a Library science. First I searched library and information science, nothing came up. Next, I searched career. So many choices. I read through the list and landed on career development. It said here are entered works on the occupational and

professional growth of individuals within their chosen fields and on that aspect of personnel management concerned with increasing an employee's potential for advancement and career changes within related fields. So I chose that. Then I felt like I needed some reference to the library aspect. I searched librarian and that did not give me what I really wanted. I scrolled through several pages and finally found library science. I kicked myself a little for not thinking of that originally, but there it was.
4. Benjamin Franklin : A Life. Presents a life of the American statesman who was a diplomat, postmaster, inventor, and revolutionary and played an integral part in the founding of the United States. 600 $a Franklin, Benjamin $d 1706-1790 $v Biography. 650 $a Founding fathers of the United States. OK, this one was really hard. I looked up the obviousBenjamin Franklin. A bridge-no. Franklin, Benjaminsame. Hmmm statesman? No, I didnt think that would work. Founding fathers Yes! It said a broader term was statesman, so that one was out. Next, I thought about biographies but that didnt really seem specific enough and I wasnt sure how to subdivide it. Then I searched for diplomats and I thought that might fit better. Then I was looking at an example on Understanding Marc and realized I could use the 600 field. I decided not to include the subfield $t for a title of work, because it does not specifically list any of his works in this summary.

5. The Starving Artist's Way: Easy Projects for Low-Budget Living Follow these tenets of the Starving Artists lifestyle to create unique projects that prove that home dcor, clothing, gifts, and accessories dont have to be expensive to be spectacular.

Test two for LI814 Fall 2012 Due Dec. 3, 2012 11:59 PM 650 $a Thriftiness. 650 $a Do-it-yourself work. The first thing I thought of when I read this description was frugal. It said to use Thriftiness. I liked that. Just to check, I searched starving artist nothing. Next I searched things like homemade, handmade, home dcor. None really stuck out to me. Then I tried do it yourself and found Do it yourself work. I think that fits perfectly.

Part 2 correcting my mistakes There are 10 intentional mistakes in this record and it is worth 5 points.
Provide your errors in the area provided. There may or may not be more than 10 errors.

Exercise 73 in Unlocking. 010 022 100 245 245 260 300 500 600 650 $a 84-26314 $a 039921258x $a DePaola, Tomie, $d 1934$a Tommie dePaolas Mother Goose. $a Mother Goose $a New York, NY : $b G. P. Putnams Sons, $c c1985. $a 127 p. : $b ill. ; $c 29 cm. $a Includes index of first lines. $a Nursery rhymes. Childrens poetry.

Error 1 There should not be a dash in in 010 Error 2 022 should be 020 Error 3 In 650 field, the $a is left off Error 4 260 $b should be just Putnam (leave off the initials and sons) Error 5 The x at the end of the ISBN number in field 020 should be a 2 Error 6 In the 260 field you do not need to include the state abbreviation with New York. Error 7 In the 300 field $b should be $b col.ill. Error 8 The 600 field is for personal names; should be 650. Error 9 The second 245 should be 246

Error 10 The new field 246 (the second 245) should have a period at the end. Additional errors.

Part 3 Creating cataloging records (10 points)

You will create MARC records for exercises 46 and 64 in Unlocking using all of the necessary fields we have discussed this semester. Include two (2) subject headings. 5 points for each record. Some help with number 64 for subject headings. The book is an analysis of the works, and view of marriage, of Henry Fielding who was an English author in the 1700s. One of his best know works is Tom Jones. Use the series information on the title page. Exercise 46 010 020 245 260 300 500 650 650 700 $a 9819108 $a 0670875813 $a Ask the bones : $b Scary stories from around the world / $c selected and retold by Arielle North Olson and Howard Schwartz ; illustrated by David Linn. $a New York : $b Viking, $c 1999. $a ix, 145 p. : $b ill. ; $c 23 cm. $a Includes bibliographic references (pages 141-145). $a Horror tales. $a Tales. $a Linn, David , $e ill.

Explanation: I searched for Scary stories on CW, it said to use Horror tales, then I searched for folktales and it said to use just Tales. I was not able to find an alternate title for field 246. Exercise 64 010 020 100 245 $a 7356 $a 081737311x $a Williams, Murial Brittain. $a Marriage : $b Fieldings mirror of morality / $c by Murial Brittain Williams.

Test two for LI814 Fall 2012 Due Dec. 3, 2012 11:59 PM 260 $a Ala. : $b University of Alabama Press, $c c1973. 300 500 600 650 830 $a vi, 168 p. ; $c 21 cm. $a Includes bibliography (pages 153-163) and index. $a Fielding, Henry $d 1707-1754 $t Tom Jones. $a Marriage. $a Studies in the humanities (University of Alabama Press) $v 1

Explanation: The city was not given. I used the example you gave in exercise I was not sure if I should include the publisher information in the 830 field. In Understanding MARC it showed it. Then in AACR2, rule 1.6E1 it says to include it if is necessary to identify the series. Since this series is dealing with study of the humanities, I thought it was necessary to include the university publisher. I hope this is the exercise you wanted. The first page of the test says #81 and last says #64. I did 64.
