Unit: Birds and Dinosaurs Topic: Dinosaur Tracks Date: 2/4/11 Class: Zoology (3rd hr) Objectives: Students

s will examine what information we can get from trace fossils, including tracks Students will figure out how to estimate an animals size from tracks and how to estimate their speed from tracks as well Activities (include minutes): Reminders: o Study guide due on Tuesday February 8th o Test on Wednesday February 9th o Zoo assignment due on Monday February 28th Dinosaur Tracks Lab o Students will learn more about/review information about trace fossils o Students will measure their foot and multiply the length by 4 o They will then measure the length of their leg and compare the 2 numbers to see that it is possible to use a footprint to estimate an animals size o Students will measure 3 dinosaur footprints to estimate the size of the dinosaur that made the tracks Materials/Equipment: Computer/projector/camera Birds and dinosaurs packet o Dinosaur Tracks Lab Meter sticks 3 dinosaur footprints Stride vs. speed graph Assessment (Embedded or Formal): Questions that students ask when doing the dinosaur tracks lab Answers and responses when going over the dinosaur tracks lab part 1 questions Reflections & Notes: Finished Part 1 of dino tracks labs need to start part 2 on Monday
