Rubric for Finding and Using Homeschooling Materials Through the Public Library

Skills to be assessed
1. Possesses and uses knowledge of library policies, expectations, and procedures for checking out materials, returning them, and reporting any problems or damages. 2. Able to locate homeschool curriculums and identify which is the best fit for their family.

Beginner
May or may not have a library card and has occasionally used the library in the past for resources unrelated to homeschooling

Intermediate
Has a library card and uses it to check out materials for the purpose of homeschooling May be aware of other services the library provides but has not used them (reading and study rooms, computer lab, etc.) Knows where curricula are shelved in the library Has briefly explored 3-5 different curricula

Advanced
Uses library resources regularly Completion of the librarys introductory program to the homeschooling resource center Is familiar with policies regarding the length of time items may be checked out, how to care for them, and how to report problems Uses other library resources such as meeting rooms and the computer lab Knows where curricula are shelved and accesses them when needed. Has explored 6 or more different curricula Able to identify which curricula is the best fit for their family (with or without assistance) Uses didactic materials on a regular bases in conjunction with thematic units or specific curriculums through the library Uses a variety of didactics, including board games, manipulatives, microscopes, and more Uses a combination of internet resources provided by the library AND OR Is familiar with many different software programs, checks them out and uses them regularly

Has basic knowledge of card catalog use and can access these materials with assistance from the librarian

3. Uses didactic materials from the library to enhance homeschooling program.

Knows didactic materials are available through the library

Knows what kinds of materials are available through the library and how they are organized Has occasionally checked out some of these materials
