CCSS.Math.Content.6.G.A.1 Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems Objective: Given a polygon and certain measurements, the student should be able to find the missing measurements and the area of the polygon.
Formulas of polygons
Triangle: (1/2)(base)(height)
Acute Triangle: All angles are less than 90 degrees. This is also a scalene triangle because all the sides are different lengths.
Obtuse Triangle: There is one angle bigger than 90 degrees. This is also an isosceles triangle because two sides/angles are equal
Step 1: Identify shape and variables Step 2: Label the variables Step 3: Set up your formula Step 4: Solve your formula Step 5: Check your work, and make sure that everything is labeled correctly
1. Isosceles Triangle; b-base, h-height 2. B- 5.31, h-3.16 1 3. 2 5.31 3.16 = 4. 8.3898 5. 8.3898 =area
Areas of Quadrilaterals:
(Click the speaker to the right)
What do you notice about this rectangle? -It has been broken up into 2 triangles. (click on the speaker ) 1. Rectangle; b-base, h-height 2. B=4.21, h-3.44 3. 4.21 3.44 = 4. 14.4824 5. 14.4824 =area Lets talk about a parallelogram! You can break a parallelogram up into two triangles and a rectangle. However, if you know the base and the height, the formula is the same as a rectangle. A=(b)(h)
Areas of Quadrilaterals
You can break the trapezoid up into two triangles, which will be congruent, and a rectangle. This will help you out if you dont have all the information you need.
If you had broken up the shape. Line segments created by the base of the triangles would measure .915cm.
Lets go through the steps together: Lets go through the steps together: 1. Trapezoid; Trapezoid; , , 1. , , 11 22 2. 5.77, 3.94,h-2.91 h-2.91 2. - -5.77, - -3.94, 11 22 3. (.5)(5.77+3.94)(2.91)=a (.5)(5.77+3.94)(2.91)=a 3. 4. 14.12805 14.12805 4. =area 2 =area 5. 14.12805 14.12805 5.
Make sure that you follow all the steps and label all the sides of the figure. This is a practice problem. So, I am not showing the work. But the total area for the figures should be: 16.5028 =area
Practice Problem:
John is building a deck for his house. John has already decided that he is going to make the deck in the shape of a rectangle. John wants the deck to reach 15 feet out from his house, and be 10 feet wide. John wants to know how much area that will give him to put his outside equipment on. Help John figure out what the area of his new deck will be. Remember to follow the steps I have given you earlier in this presentation.

Assessment:
Find the area of this figure:
a. 20.00 b. 21.7679 c. 30.25 d. 25.5794
Assessment:
Angela is building a garden. She wants her garden to be in the shape of a trapezoid. She had already marked the area for her garden and is ready to start plating. Angela just needs to know how much mulch she needs to cover the area of her garden. There is a picture of her garden below. Find the area of the garden to help Angela see how much mulch she is going to need.
a. 23.2211 b. 16.07 c. 20.7839 d. 11.359
sure that you are writing all your work to hand in. Keep your work for this problem so you can see where you made a mistake.
