Artifact Analysis

1. Explain why you chose the object you did. -I chose the artifact I did because I thought that the Fresh Market produce manual would be a very good way of showing an object that the entire dept uses to communicate ideas and how to do the job in general, along with other needed information about the job.

2. What do you already know about this object? How does that affect your interpretation of its significance (importance) in the subculture/community? -I know the object is what actually trained me to do this job and it really actually is used on a daily basis by my co workers and I. This just makes me realize how important this manual is to the entire produce department.

3. Think about the values this artifact reflects for this subculture. What are they? How do you know? (i.e. what things are made important? What things are shown to be good, appropriate, and liked?) -The things that I guess you can say are more important in our manual are the standards of the company and the way to do things in the dept. These are valued because honestly even if we as a dept dont like some of the standards we have to follow them in order to keep our job!

4. How is this object used in the subculture? What does that tell you about its significance and the value it has for the group? -Like mentioned above the manual (object) is used to communicate different information in the dept and it communicates to all employees in the dept how to actually do the job and be successful within the department, it is basically the instruction manual of our department and holds everything we have to know to do our job.

5. What literacies are needed to use this artifact? -The main kind of literacy that would be presented in this manual would be the actual how tos of the job and the explanations of much of the product we sell in the dept. We have to know basic things about our dept (aka the expectations) in order to properly use the manual.

6. What words or phrases stand out as lexis of the community? -Some words or phrases that are lexis of our department our things like PLU, Cull, Handstack Rotation, as well as some ways to prepare our product that we sell because that can be unknown info to outsiders to our dept.

7. How is this artifact connected to other behaviors and values in this group? -The manual controls the actual behaviors and values in our community , it literally dictates what behaviors are expected and what values should be kept as most important.

8. What research might you do on the object's history? uses? -There isnt much research you can do with this manual because you can only really ask the creators any questions you would have about info presented in the manual, thats really it.

9. The three most important things this artifact presents is how to actually successfully do our job, what the expectations and goals are from the company to our department, and it also presents much of the lexis involved in the dept and it teaches us these terms and what they mean/how to use them.

What is your purpose? What is your goal for writing this? What should the reader take away? Are you trying to explain an aspect of the subculture/community to outsiders? Do you want to convince outsiders of the subculture/communitys value? Would you like members of the subculture/community to examine something about themselves? Are you comparing outsiders to insiders? If so, do you favor one side?
