Puzzle Cube Design Brief

Taking an idea you have and transferring it from a concept to a sketch, to working drawings, to models, and then to a working prototype is a very rewarding process. This project is going to take you from concept design work to final production of a product! You will begin with hand sketches and move on to production drawings on the computer. You will then use these production drawings to build your own puzzle block! Problem Statement: A local office furniture manufacturing company throws away tens of thousands of scrap ! hardwood cubes that result from its furniture construction processes. The material is e"pensive, and the scrap represents a sizeable loss of profit. Design Statement: #ine $ffice #urniture, %nc. would like to return value to its waste product by using it as the raw material for desktop novelty items that will be sold on the showroom floor. &esign, build, test, document, and present a three'dimensional puzzle system that is made from the scrap hardwood cubes. The puzzle system must provide an appropriate degree of challenge to a person who is seven years of age or older. Constraints: (. The puzzle must be fabricated from )*, ! hardwood cubes. (. The puzzle system must contain e"actly five puzzle pieces. ). +ach individual puzzle piece must consist of at least four, but no more than si" hardwood cubes that are permanently attached to each other. ,. -o two puzzle pieces can be the same. .. +very puzzle piece must be at least ) cubes deep / wide / high in each dimension 0can not lay flat regardless of how you turn it1. 2. The five puzzle pieces must assemble to form a ) 3! cube. 4. 5uzzle parts should interlock.
