AJ Gannaban English 1103 Extended Inquiry Proposal September 24, 2013 American Media on the Asian Stereotype I choose

this topic because its a topic that hits close to home is a topic that I can honestly say that I am passionate towards. I have lived in the united states for 18 years, which has shown me how Asians are portrayed in the media can create stereotypes for Asians, which can later turn into prejudices. The stereotypes create by the American media can either be negative or positive it all depends on how people interpret them and respond to these stereotypes when confronted with someone who is actually Asian. I myself have experienced both the positives and negatives of the stereotypes created by the media. This topic interests me because I want to delve deeper into the way the media portrays Asians and how influential it is in creating stereotypes geared towards the Asian population.

My thesis statement is: What Asian stereotypes are created by American Media and how influential are they? My main ideas consist of the different types of media that America creates throughout the years and the stereotypes associated with each one. I will also focus on studies that will either prove that the media either is or isnt influential in regards to creating stereotypes or preconceived schemas towards different races. I will also try to interview different people and ask them what they think are typical characteristic of someone who is Asian. Finally I would also ask people who are Asian and ask what traits they think that society has prescribed to them. Finally, I would focus more on questions regarding stereotypes and self-identity.

My primary sources of information would be from personal interviews, articles from the library or websites on the internet, newspapers, periodicals, essays, books, and various case studies. I think it might be hard to find out how each Asian stereotype originated. I also think it would be hard to gauge how important it is to have an identity or an idea of oneself and relating how important it is to have this self-concept for oneself in order to succeed in life or simply just to function.

If the results of my initial research are too numerous I would narrow my subject by focusing mainly on the American media and its effects on the perception of Asians through the stereotypes it creates. If my research turns up to be very little I would talk about the American Media and how it affects Asians through the stereotypes it creates, the origins of these stereotypes, the effectiveness/ persuasiveness of the media, the effects of the America mass media and how it makes Asians to perceive themselves. Im thinking of presenting this project through the use of PowerPoint or some kind of electronic visual aid, and incorporating videos and clips of the Asian stereotypes created through the different outputs of media. I will make this presentation interesting by incorporating the use of Ethos, Logos, and Pathos. I will provide logical information, provide the credibility of the information, and add emotional parts to the presentation to tug at the audiences heart strings.
