Planning for Whole-Group Instruction o Plan to present the content the same way that you would plan any lesson o Have clear learning objectives, prepare high-quality examples, and promote interaction Organizing Groups o Create groups mixed by ability, gender, and ethnicity o Four is the ideal number Planning for Team Study o Need high-quality materials to guide interaction o Materials should require convergent answers Calculating Base Scores and Improvement Points o Base score- students average on passed tests and quizzes o Improvement points are awarded based on how students perform on a test based on their base score

Phase 1 - Instruction o Explain the process then have the student practice under your guidance Phase 2 - Transition to teams o Explain the process for rewarding improvement points Phase 3 -Team studies o Provides opportunities for students to practice new content and receive feedback o Must judge when to intervene intervening too soon may be counterproductive o Should intervene if one student is dominating the group Phase 4 - Recognizing Achievement o Use assessment as a basis for achievement points and reward students for improving

We want to know if the students understand the content, develop an ability to work together, and learn to take responsibility Assessing understanding of content is done the same as it would be for any form of learning Assessing group processes is less formal - cannot give a test to assess Questions relevant to assessing group processes o Are all members contributing? o Are some members dominating? o Do boys and girls contribute equally? o Are members from different ethnic groups participating?

Team awards o Team scoring is based on the improvement of all individual members o Team awards can exist in a variety of forms whatever would be motivating for the particular grade level o Student should be reminded that they compete against their past performance instead of other teams Grades o Seeing improvement reflected in grades is added incentive o Experts advise against basing final grades on improvement points because it does not show the students actual level of achievement

So what? What is important to understand about this?

STAD is a great learning strategy used after the skill is taught that allows the student to practice the skill within a group and also teaches the art of teamwork.
