PROCEDURE
Prior to lesson Introduction Attention Grabber Alright Grade 3s. Today were going to be detectives. What does a detective do? - wait for responses (ask a few students) - one of the things a detective does is collect data and organize it. - Today were going to be detectives collecting data too! I need each and every one of you to close your eyes. I need to picture in your mind what a detective looks like. Can you picture it? Okay now I need each of you to put on your (imaginary) detectives hat. Okay, now pick up your clipboard and (imaginary) magnifying glass. Are we ready to go? Time

2 minutes 9:02

Transition to Body

Now, I need you all to think back to yesterday when we started reading Freckle Juice. What was the one thing that Andrew wanted that Nicky had? - wait for freckles response Thats right! Having freckles or not having freckles is called an attribute. Today were going to collect information about your classmates attributes and interpret this information. Body

Learning Activity #1

Lets see if we can use freckles as an attribute to sort our class. - Line up all students who have freckles - Line up all students who dont have freckles in a line next to the other Okay, so we have our data sorted. What are the two categories we sorted our data into? How can we record this data? How can we keep track of these attributes? Pull sticks for responses - Prompt for responses. Make a list of responses on the board. - Answer were looking for: tally marks (this is something they already know how to do) Have students return to their seats. Great job! Your case for today, is to work in groups to find other attributes we can use to sort our class. Remember, freckles are a physical attribute (something we can see), but we can also sort by other attributes, like language, age, etc. I want you to discuss at your pod for 4 minutes: What are some other attributes we could use to sort our class? Pull sticks for responses. Prompt towards simple attributes with have it/dont have it (blonde hair, not blonde hair; glasses, no glasses) - Make a list of possible attributes

15 minutes 9:19

Teacher Notes: Assessments/ Differentiation

In case class doesnt have freckles, have another sorting rule prepared (hair colour, glasses, etc.) Observe discussion of attributes. Be sure to come back to groups who are struggling when we get to LA #2 Separate the class into groups of two or three (groups are pre-assigned). Model this!!!! Students must decide as a group, which 3 different attributes they would like to use to collect their data on. After groups have decided which attributes to use, they must put find another group who is finished and share their attributes with each other. Afterwards they must put their hand up for me to check them. Then they can begin. Students must then record their information on the given sheet using tally marks. (Explain that some data may be obtained without talking to classmates while others you do have to talk to one another. Talk about how we must be patient if we need to ask a student a question, because they are also working on their own task) 2 minutes for instructions Check for understanding: Ask one student the first thing they must do in their group. Ask another student for the second thing, etc.

Learning Activity #2

30 minutes 9:49

Teacher Notes: Assessments/ Differentiation

Observe groups and assist with finding attributes that are suitable. Make sure students are recording tallies clearly.

Closure Consolidation of Learning: Who can tell me what an attribute is? What were some of the attributes we talked about/ used today in class? How did we sort our data? Feedback To Students Transition To Next Lesson Discuss how group work went today. Things that went well, things that need to be improved. Next class we are going to use this same data, but we are going to show it in several different ways.

Intro: detectives collecting data freckle juice connection Freckles are an attribute Body: sort class into freckles/no freckles o how do we collection/keep this data? o Use tally marks Discuss in pods what are some possible attributes? (4 minutes) o Emphasize that attributes need not be visible language, likes/dislikes, travel o Make a list on the board Instructions about group work (agenda on board) First discuss what does good group work look like? o Must choose at least 3 attributes must discuss as a group first have me check them first o Collect data Make sure to mention to be patient if you need to ask people for data o Record data
Closure: what is an attribute, what are some examples of attributes how did we sort our data? o Next class we will be sorting our data a different way Discuss how group work went
