LESSONPLAN Date: Monday, November 24th 2013 BackgroundInformation:

This lesson can be used as a fun and interactive way for students to develop and practice their phonemic awareness. It also is a great way for students to use spoken word to make silly rhyming words enabling and encouraging sound structure awareness. Students should have a general idea about rhyming words and phonemic awareness. Students should be encouraged by instructor to participate in a warm and welcoming manner and a safe space community is required in order to coax young literacy learners into letting down their guard and being silly for this fun and interactive literacy activity. Support, modeling, and additional explanation from instructor can be used as necessary.

Gather students on the carpet in a circle and tell them that we are going to be singing a song about the corner grocery store Teacher asks students Who has been to the grocery store? *Wait for student response. Now teacher asks students And what do you do at the grocery store? *Wait for students response. Lets pretend we are going to the Grocery Store today. Which Grocery store should we go to? *Wait for student response. Oh the ________ Grocery Store !hats a great idea. Wow! Look at all of these items that we have here! Can anybody tell me what one of the rhymes was? *Wait for student response. Ex. Corn & Horn! - Excellent! Now we know that corn rhymes with horn! What were going to do is hang this up on Groupings: the class wall so that you can all look back at it whenever you need to or want to. And this week at our writing center the focus is going to be on the rhyming words so Im going to ask every person in All together the classroom to think of as many rhymes as they can for the items in our grocery bag and write on the them down in your rhyming book. Dont worry about spelling, were just going for sounds. So carpet whatever words you think rhyme well, write them down however you think they are spelt in your rhyming book. *Pause for student comprehension. - Are you up for the challenge? *Students should scream YES!
