Space can have different effects on everyone. The same space can affect two individuals differently and different spaces can affect people differently. The student Union is a very large space and inside are floors that each give off a different sense. The authors have each explored these options but in different setting and I use them to analyze the student Union. In Rethinking Efficiency in Acute Care Nursing Units: Analyzing Nursing Unit Layouts for Improved Spatial Flow, the authors of the article explained that nursing can be a stress and demanding job, and because they face a significant amount of stress errors, distractions, and interference with the nursing process happens more often. The authors believe that if the layout of the nursing units were built differently, nurses would be able to work more efficiently. Hospital layout and the built space contribute to operational efficiency and safety... evidence exists that links quality and safety outcomes in hospitals to the physical environment (Pg.40). Different spaces have different effects on people. When I walked into the Student Union at UCF, the hallway that lead up to the Grand ballroom had many flags, when I did not see my countries flag hanging with the others I questioned why it was not there. My experience in that hallway was different then this girl Gabby whose Jamaican flag was up there, she pointed it out and smiled. There were basically two different spaces, for me one without my countries flag and for Gabby one with her countries flag, if the space was created differently and it had my flag I would have reacted accordingly. In From Necropolis to Blackpolis: Necropolitical Governance and Black Spatial Praxis in So Paulo, Brazil, Jaime Amparo Alves explained how In Sao Paulo, Brazil law enforcement were starting a zero tolerance rule in the areas that had heavy crimes , the death tolls and people that were being incarcerated were black and brown migrants from Brazil. Alves then explains that early in history Black and Brown migrants were forced to move to property areas, black and brown migrants from northeast Brazil have been pushed into racialized territories marked by police violence, lack of public infrastructure, and overwhelming poverty (Carril 2006:85). As a result of migrants and low income citizens being moved to these conditions more violence broke out, which caused the need for more law enforcement and stricter rules. The space that these people were placed in caused them to react the way they did, and even resist the police efforts. In the same since, the first floor of the student union is the loudest floor with the most traffic. It is because the space is designed in a way that allows or even forces that to happen. When I walk into the first floor space I feel like I can talk as loud as I want with friends and be more loose because that is the effect the space has on me, same as the effect that the poverty area has on the migrants that were forced to move. Their study was done on Chinese hospitals were they had questionnaires, and workers were asked a series of questions then from the answers they received they drew up

a few more questionnaires, from those results they saw that the clearness of the space, was an important part of the hospitals environment as well as the plants that were placed thought out the hospital floors. The workers felt like the plants gave them a feeling of a healing environment, I realized that the designers of these floors new that plants would give off that feeling and that is why they placed it there. This reminded me of the student union, they designed each floor in a different way that purposely gave students the feeling of what each floor is, the first floor was designed for large masses of people so, large groups go in and out of the first floor, the third floor was designed with plenty of rooms and no with other activity, so church services and other quite meetings are held there, in the same way the plants make workers feel like they're in a healing environment, they, knowingly or not, provide better and more healing care. How do you feel when you walk into the student union? Like everyone is looking at me. What effect does the atmosphere have on you? It makes me feel rushed, and like I have to keep moving.What do you think about the student union's design? Like its circular, theres a lot of space and focal points. What focal points, are you referring to? The seal What draws your attention to the seal? The fact that the ropes are around it If the seal was in a corner with the ropes still around it would it still draw your focus? No, because its in the corner who would see it. Through these questions told me that Yolanda was indeed affected by the space of the first floor of the Student Union. The first floor was designed to hold

large masses of people so they can go in and out thats why she felt rushed and like she had to keep moving. Also the seal was in the middle of the first floor, and the design of that made it so the seal was one of her focal points. Yolanda proves that space, in this case the first floor of the SU space, defiantly effects people. Yolanda, Lejuste. Personal Interview. 15 Oct. 2013 I created a survey to get a large and more accurate results on how students feel the design of the Student Union effected them. The results showed this : 50% of students go to the student union at least once a week. Half of the survey takers felt excited when they were in the SU and the other half felted annoyed. When students walked into the student union 83% of them noticed or were attracted to the seal that's directly in the middle of the first floor. This proved my point that because the seal is designed front and center it's what is mostly noticed, also student believed that the design of the SU helps what it is being used for, in fact 83% of the survey takers felt this way. Those student obviously are effected by the space and use the space according to what it is built for. The designers of the student union space wanted it to be used in a certain way so they created it so that it could effect students. Also the second floor was built so that the effect that anyone who goes up would get, would be to study or hold group studies. 50% of the survey takers felt like studying or holding group studies on the second floor. So SU as a space effects everyone that goes in there, space is designed in a way to especially effect people the way the designer want people to be effected. Durning an interview with Donald Cadet, I ask five questions that would test my theory that, space effects everyone. How do you feel when you walk into the student union? "Walking into the the student union I felt a burst of excitement, my palms started sweating and

my heart rate increased." What does the atmosphere do to you? "The atmosphere in the SU helps me to interact and open up to my fellow Knights." What do you think about the design of the SU? "The design of the SU is very beautiful and simple" Are you attracted to anything in particular? "I am attracted to the restaurants because I love food and if I lack it I become a Grinch. The Pegasus on the ground reminds me of the UCF creed and how I am honored to be attending the University of Central Florida." What came up from interviews and my survey was the fact that majority of people were attracted or drawn to the seal that was purposely located in the center of the first floor. As Donald stated it reminded him of the UCF creed, which is what it did to everyone who choose the seal as an option. The designers of the SU first floor wanted students to be reminded of the creed, the seal is a representation of that. They wanted students to be effected that's why the space is designed in a way that would effect students, because the designers know that space effects everyone. Donald, Cadet.
