Lesson Plan: Adverbial Clauses Objective(s): Students will be able to identify and correctly place adverbial clauses in sentences

by complete a sentence combining activity Procedures: Remind students of what a subordinate clause is: a clause that acts as a noun, adjective, or adverb is called a subordinate or dependent clause because it cannot stand alone Remind students of the signal words to recognize adverb clauses: after, although, because, before, if, since, so, though, unless, until, when, whenever, where, wherever, and while Remind students of placement of clauses- for adverb clauses, they may be placed at various points in a sentence for variety, emphasis, and clarity Begin exercise with students in Writing to Win (I do not have a copy of the activity: the books were not allowed outside the classroom) The activity consisted of 10-12 sentence combinations. Each problem had a starter sentence and a subordinate sentence. The students were assigned to combine the two using correct placement, punctuation, and combination techniques to create one fluent sentence. I read each sentence combination and together as a whole, we decided how to combine each sentence (more than one answer was accepted for several questions). Students recorded their answers on a separate sheet of paper and this was handed in to my FBS Assessment: Students were assigned the following activity in Writing to Win. They completed the sentences on the back of the sheet they had already. My FBS allowed me to grade these sentences for assessment.
