Assignment 1B (Structural Dynamics and Modelling)


(Due date: Monday, 24 of September before 10am)
This assignment is aimed at training students over the use of Excel spreadsheets and the associated hand calculation procedure for the 2D dynamic analysis of a five storey moment resisting frame (see schematic diagram in below). Students will make their own decisions over the dimensions and mechanical properties of the frame members (columns and beams) as well as the mass on each floor that are supported by the frame. Must ensure that the fundamental natural period of vibration of the five storey frame and the associated floor mass is within the range 0.25s 0.5s. Your report should contain the following : (i) Clear sketches showing the dimensions of the moment frame, floor area and inertia load which will be carried by each of these frames forming part of the building; (ii) Calculation of the modal natural periods, mode shapes, participation factors and effective modal masses (for at least 3significant modes of vibration) using a method taught in L7; (iii) Comparison of results (modal periods and mode shapes) from EXCEL spreadsheet with those obtained from a commercial software. The comparison should be presented clearly in the form of a table showing results generated from the different programs. Sample print-outs from the commercial package should also be presented; (iv) Simulation of the time-histories of the roof displacement, inter-storey drift at the bottom storey and base shear based on the application of the Newhall accelerogram provided in the last worksheet of file: Practice for Central Diff Method.xls.; (v) Repeat the simulations of item (iv) above using stochastically simulated turbulent wind forces using the simulation technique described in lecture L5. The wind conditions are as defined in Suggested Exercise L5. State all the assumptions made.
