COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS Term: 8 L T P: 4 0 0 Credits: 4 Department Elective: 7 Total Lectures: 40 UNIT-I (8) Introduction, Conservation equations: Mass,

Momentum and Energy equations, Convective form of the equation and general description. Classification into various types of equations: Parabolic, Elliptic, Boundary and initial conditions, Overview of numerical methods. UNIT-II (8) Finite difference methods; Different means for formulating finite difference equations, Taylor series expansion, Integration over element, Local function method; Treatment of boundary conditions; Boundary layer treatment; Variable property, Interface and free surface treatment, accuracy of F.D. method. UNIT-III (8) Finite volume Techniques: Finite volume methods; different types of finite volume grids; approximations of surface and volume integrals; interpolation methods; Central, upwind and hybrid formulations and comparison for convection-diffusion problem. Finite elements methods: Rayleigh-Ritz, Galerkin and Least square methods; Interpolation functions, One and two dimensional elements, Applications. UNIT-IV (8) Solution of linear equation; TDMA, Gauss-Seidal, Solution of finite difference equations, Iterative methods, Matrix inversion methods, linear ADI method, Operator splitting, Fast Fourier Transform applications. Time integration Methods; Single and multilevel methods; predictor-corrector methods; stability analysis; Applications of transient conduction and advection-diffusion problems. Numerical Grid Generation: Numerical grid generation; basic ideas; transformation and mapping. UNIT-V (8) Navier-Stokes Equations: Explicit and Implicit methods; SIMPLE type methods; fractional step methods. Turbulence Modeling: Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations, RANS modeling, DNS and LES. BOOKS: 1. Ferziger Joel H and Peric, M.
