I took your advice and split my paper into parts that I tried to incorporate it all as a whole. I hope it worked. I would like to meet again and talk about the conclusion together. I feel like my conclusion is my Now section and felt like a conclusion would just be repeating that. I hope my new examples are better this time.. I felt like I was getting the point of the paper more in this revision process than the other times. I also took out a few paragraphs that I thought did not fit into the paper. My Then, Middle, and No !itera"y #s a "ollege st$dent yo$ do not thin% abo$t ho yo$r litera"y "ame to be and hat a&&e"ted it.

'hen ( started to analy)e my litera"y in reading and riting, ( &o$nd that ( have had many "om*onents a&&e"ting it. My *arents, my tea"hers, boo%s, and many other things have hel*ed me thro$gh my literary *ro"ess. (n this essay, ( am going to tal% abo$t the stages in hi"h ( have &elt my litera"y gro . These

stages are my homes"hool, *$bli" s"hool, and *resent e+*erien"es.

Kiser2 ( hen ( as homes"hooled %indergarten thro$gh eighth grade. ( remember as &irst learning to read, it as "alled ,oo%ed on -honi"s. (t ords, and then yo$ hat my mom had me do

as annoying, &irst yo$ sit there

and listen to a

oman so$nding o$t letters or

o$ld loo% at a long list and try to

do it yo$rsel&. This too% a long time and *arti"$lar game that

as boring and ( am not s$re it really hel*ed me. ( loved this ith yo$r letters, hile

as "alled Reader Rabbit. The game hel*ed yo$ *ra"ti"e

*laying &$n games. #t the time, my *arents had not *$r"hased a "om*$ter, so ( grand*arent.s ho$se. My grand*arents al ays let me $se the "om*$ter

o$ld go *lay it at my

hen ( needed it &or s"hool or

*lay. (t is &$nny to thin% abo$t the "om*$ter ( *layed on, it as so big and b$l%y, b$t seemed so "ool at the time. /o$ also had to ait ten min$tes 0$st &or it to t$rn on. My mom set $* a s*a"e in o$r basement here e "o$ld do o$r s"hool or%. ( had t o other sisters so e ere never doing or% alone. Most o& the time, e ere res*onsible &or o$r o n or%, b$t sometimes o$ld have gro$* st$dies together. (n these gro$* st$dies, my mom o$ld tea"h $s history or e o$ld ta%e t$rns reading. My mom o$ld al ays as% $s 1$estions, then e o$ld all dis"$ss them. This hel*ed $s meditate and thin% abo$t hat e ere reading. ( al ays li%ed this a"tivity be"a$se ( and my older sisters al ays got to share o$r o n o*inions and tal% abo$t o$r tho$ghts. 'hen ( needed hel* on a ord *ron$n"iation or a senten"e, my sisters or my mother o$ld al ays be there to hel* me. 'e $s$ally or%ed on o$r assignments 234, these times varied de*ending on hat e had to do that day. ( believe my mom had the greatest e&&e"t on my litera"y at this time in my li&e. She hel*ed me learn and *ra"ti"e reading and riting in many di&&erent ays. She *$shed me to be the best reader ( "o$ld be at this time. My dad also had a *art in my litera"y be"a$se he or%ed to

Kiser3 b$y all my boo%s &or s"hool altho$gh he did not dire"tly tea"h me reading and riting. My mom loves b$ying boo%s and still does. Thro$gho$t my "hildhood ( al ays had a *lethora o& boo%s available &or me to read. 5nly no do ( reali)e ho l$"%y ( as to be able to read di&&erent boo%s anytime ( anted. ( remember hen ( "o$ldn6t read and e o$ld be driving do n the road. ( o$ld see billboards and signs and as% my sisters to read them to me7 ho ever, it got on their nerves to read every sign to me. My mom o$ld "ontin$ally tell $s ho im*ortant reading as to o$r ed$"ation and li&e. She o$ld ma%e $s read boo%s that ta$ght $s li&e lessons and gave $s a bigger *i"t$re o& the orld. She also made $s read biogra*hies o& *ioneers, soldiers, and missionaries ho s$&&ered to ma%e a di&&eren"e in the orld. #ll these stories have a&&e"ted the ay ( ant to live my li&e. ( ant to be able to a&&e"t *eo*les. lives in a *ositive ay thro$gho$t my li&e. ( love the &a"t that hen yo$ are reading a good boo%, yo$ "an *$t yo$rsel& into another orld. 'hen ( read a boo%, ( get "lose ith all the "hara"ters. ( am a very emotional *erson so ( "ry hen a "hara"ter dies or something tragi" ha**ens. (t al ays ma%es me sad hen ( &inish a boo% be"a$se ( al ays &eel li%e (6m saying goodbye in a ay to all the "hara"ters and have to go ba"% to the real orld. ( remember 0$st sitting in o$r s"hool room, &eet *ro**ed $* on my des%, and 0$st reading. ( am one o& those *eo*le ho "an6t sto* reading a boo% $ntil ( &inish it, b$t my mom o$ld ma%e me sto* and do other st$&& s$"h as math, hi"h is a &$l. These e+*erien"es ta$ght me to love reading and in t$rn ( im*roved my reading. #lso, be"a$se ( develo*ed a love &or reading boo%s at a yo$ng age it as easier to read hen ( as assigned boo%s in *$bli" s"hool. ( don.t li%e riting on an a"ademi" level, b$t love riting to "omm$ni"ate to *eo*le. 'hen ( as little, ( o$ld send letters and "ards to my "o$sins and &amily members. This as be&ore te+ting and ( had an email. My mom o$ld ma%e me rite on a se*arate sheet o& *a*er &irst hat ( as going to say so ( o$ld not ma%e mista%es riting on the a"t$al stationary. (t as al ays &$n *i"%ing o$t hat %ind o& *retty stationary ( as going to $se, then &ig$ring o$t hat to say, then getting to go *$t it

Kiser4 in the mail bo+. There as something neat abo$t someone ta%ing the time to read yo$r letter and sending one ba"% to yo$. My mom al ays *roo&read my letters to ma%e s$re there ere no mista%es and that my hand riting as readable. Still to this day ( as% her to *roo&read o$t o& habit. 8etting a letter al ays means more to me than someone sending me an email or te+t. !etters are m$"h more *ersonal and tho$ght&$l. ( did not al ays reali)e it, b$t reading and riting has al ays been a ma0or a"tivity in my li&e. ( "annot imagine being in a sit$ation o& *eo*le li%e 9immy Santiago :a"a and the many others e have read abo$t ho ta$ght themselves ho to read. (t m$st &eel in"redibly limiting to not be able to "omm$ni"ate, share, and be able to rite yo$r tho$ghts or emotions. ( am very l$"%y to have been born into a &amily ith *arents ho s$**ort my ed$"ation &$lly and a "o$ntry ho *rovides an ed$"ation &or everyone. ;rom a yo$ng age ( have been given reso$r"es s$"h as "om*$ters, boo%s, and many other o**ort$nities to better my reading and riting. My mom tells me that ( did not learn to read early or late, b$t that ( read at a normal time. My mom had the greatest e&&e"t on litera"y. She sat there thro$gh all my hining and made me establish dis"i*line. This dis"i*line hel*ed me be"ome a better reader and a riter hen ( entered *$bli" s"hool. Public School

Kiser< 5nly one tea"her in my high s"hool "areer really made an im*a"t on my reading and riting

litera"y. ,er name as Mrs. Sigmon. She ta$ght me that reading is im*ortant and that %no ledge is *o er. She or%ed on giving $s a strong &o$ndation &or many ty*es o& riting. #lso, she ta$ght me that things yo$ learn no ill hel* yo$ later on in li&e. (n other ords, she ins*ired me. She en"o$raged $s

to im*rove o$r riting and to read ritings that hel*ed en"o$rage $s to ta%e a"tion or thin%. #s ( said earlier there is a lot o& *ositive and negatives in homes"hooling. 'hen ( as yo$nger and being homes"hooled, ( did not do a lot ith riting. My mom mainly &o"$sed on tea"hing $s vo"ab$lary and grammar, b$t not a"t$ally riting. 'hen ( did rite7 ho ever, my mom graded it harshly and didn6t give me good &eedba"%. Even tho$gh ( as not very good at riting hen ( ent to s"hool, ( greatly im*roved. ( don6t believe all homes"hoolers are behind in this area, it 0$st ha**ened in my sit$ation. 'hen ( ent to *$bli" s"hool, ( &eel ( im*roved &or many reasons. (n *$bli" s"hool, ( as held a""o$ntable &or hat ( rote and read so it made me ta%e it more serio$sly. ( also li%e being aro$nd *eo*le ho ere learning the same things and ho ere on the same level as me. ( also as "onsistently learning ne riting te"hni1$es and strategies. Even tho$gh standardi)ed testing as

stress&$l, it stressed me eno$gh to st$dy and or% hard to do ell on it. #lso, ( as doing *a*ers &or every "lass, e+"e*t math. This hel*ed me im*rove in all di&&erent ty*es o& riting and gathering "ontent. ( also had to rite &or s"holarshi*s, a**li"ations, "l$bs, and s*ee"hes &or s"hool a"tivities. =ollege>No

Kiser? ( &eel li%e ( im*rove at reading and riting every year and ee%. Every "lass hel*s me im*rove my riting more. Every *ro&essor gives ba"% di&&erent &eedba"% and ants something di&&erent. This in t$rn hel*s yo$ rite &or a n$mber o& a$dien"es and ma%es yo$ stronger in yo$r riting s%ills. ( &eel these e+*e"tations are "hallenges that ( ho*e to a"hieve and be"ome ell ro$nded in. ( &eel that ( am "ontin$ally im*roving their litera"y. ( have &o$nd that my litera"y *lays a h$ge role in my li&e and that my e+*erien"es have made my riting hat it is today. ( ant to develo* "on&iden"e hen riting and be satis&ied hen ( &inish a *a*er or any %ind o& riting. ( ho*e to a"hieve this goal b$t $nderstand it is not an easy one.
