Shannon Booth PIP Proposal: What methods can be utilized to develop the snare drum skills of Junior Band

percussionists? Purpose: The focus of the selected PIP is to investigate and determine the most effective production and utilization of snare drum techniques for beginning percussionists. Strategies: I will work some with my TM to develop my own percussion skills and keep a practice journal of my percussion techniques to describe how to achieve desired results and what indicators of success are for students. The best way to help students achieve success is to be able to do it myself, and apply the skills rather than keep them theoretical. Develop practice lesson plans for learners to utilize (ie: 20 minute practice plans for specific skills) Record myself demonstrating the 20 minute practice sessions Include photographs and video footage of common errors that occur when learning these skills and how to avoid/troubleshoot the errors Assessment: The end product of this PIP will be a website with links to various resources (including videos, rhythmic exercises etc.) which can be used by students and educators to develop beginning percussionist skills and see them excel. At the end of each section will be included a video of me performing the skill on the snare drum using accurate technique Time Line: September: Develop a bench mark for where I would like my percussion skills to be at the end of the term. Determine indicators of success. Snare Drum/Bass Drum (rolls, paradiddle, flam, drag, ruffs) Mallet Rudiments/Auxiliary Timpani Set up website 3 sections (area for blog/journal, video, and links to exercises) Set practice goals (weeks for specific percussion techniques) October Completion of Section I: Snare Drum Rudiments Beginning of Section II: Mallet Rudiments

November Completion of Section II: Mallet Rudiments Beginning of Section III: Timpani Rudiments December Completion of Section III: Timpani and completion/presentation of website
