Example Questionnaire (based on topic of Education): In America, although they have to work hard after graduating, they can

seek for interesting thing or dreams for their future when they are students. But in China the only important thing is to study hard. And its just for the exam. They are required to just memorize how to pronounce and the words (spelling). They dont care about the meaning and writing essay, interview and discussion. They dont create anything. And parents, teachers, and society want the children to study so hard like study until 12:oo. Its common.

1. Tell me about where you are from. What is your country like? China. Traditional country. They have a lot of secret culture. The culture includes unclear thing that hasnt discovered. They have different culture, such as festivals, rules, thinking from western region. Confucianism. 2. What cultures do you identify with? Do you look at it as a national culture, or are their subcultures in your country? Chinese culture. Some people believe in Buddhism like her grandma. Buildings are protected by government that has strong authority. Some subcultures, such as western and Korean culture, exist but they are weak. Followed by the initial questions, you should ask specific questions about the chosen topic. 1. Im interested in learning more about your culture. One thing I am interested in is [education]. Could you tell me about how education works in your culture? Really important. In the U.S, people need to be creative. Chinese education has problems because they dont see creativity as an important skill. Students require to cultivate the skill of solve mathematical and scientific problems. Thats why they are strong in math and science. They arent good at the skills of creating something. Even normal jobs need high degree. Its necessary to have at least bachelors degree. They consider bachelors degree is the lowest status to live and work. 2. When children are small, what attitude do parents take toward their education? Do children have much freedom? Do they get to play much? Study hard. Playing the piano, drawing, various skills because learning various things leads to a lot of benefit in the future. In the plying piano, they need to get high certificate because it is necessary to get a job, and to enter university (every thing) 3. How would you describe how students communicate with teachers? Do they have more formal or more friendly relations? Would you say that students approach or question teachers or just obey them? How do they address teachers? Students show their teachers the respect and they talk to their teachers formally. If they want to go to restroom, they first call the teacher by last name + teacher. But the

teachers think to go to restrooms after class is desirable rather than going during class. Exceptionally, one of her teachers allowed them to call her by her nickname. If they have a question they can ask him anytime. The important thing is responsibility. 4. What do teachers expect of students? Are students diligent to live up to these expectations? Elementary= 6, middle=3, high=3 bachelor=4 or 5, and they are expected to get the master degree. Elementary and middle school are free. 99% of them are public school. But beyond high school they are required to pay. 7. Is college difficult to get in to? What is the process that you have to go through to get in? What obstacles are there in education? Do males and females have equal chances? Are there any biases based on sex/gender? Its difficult because they have to prepare for the entrance exam to enter the university. The test depends on which course the student wants to go liberal arts or science course. Choose it. For science course, there are 4 subjects: Chinese, English, math, and one of physics, chemical, or biology. For the other course, 4: C, E, geography, politics, etc. In English exam, there are two parts: listening and writing. 8. How do students decide where they will go to university? Is it their personal decision or are other people involved? What sort of things do they base their decisions on? Is there much choice for them or does the government direct them? How did you decide to come here? Major. They want to go the best university. Their teacher and parents besides themselves decide the university. Some people move to other province, others stay because of the comfortable weather like her hometown or the economically development. There is abundant choice. She decided KU because she had only one choice in America at her ability. 9. Are college students able to decide their subjects? Can they change majors easily? It depends on major.

There are different subjects they can take depending on major. No. Its so difficult but they can. Some students do. Talk with a counselor. 10. Are schedules followed closely in school or do classes start when the teacher decides, or some other way? Schedule. 11. Can you tell a story that demonstrates the differences between the education in the U.S. and your country? Rule. They have their own seat and desk although American students can sit down at any seats, also they may form circle with their desks.American students are permitted to eat and drink during class. When they ask their teacher a question, they raise their hands and ask after the teacher pointed to a person. say you have a question? 12. Is there anything else that you would like to tell me that you think is important? About homework, they need just to do the workbook. Just writing, no interview. A lot of homework.
