Winter Edition 2013 Deadline for spring issue March 7 2014

Springside Baptist Church

Christmas Eve Service: December 24 @ 6:30 pm
Christmas 2013
Sunday Schedule: Pastor Richard Kauenhofen - 306-792-2190 Pastor Mike Anderson - 306-792-2290 Sunday School @ 9:45 am Morning Worship Service @ 10:50 am

ANTICIPATE to look forward to; expect. How many of us are looking forward to the season of Christmas? Of course different people look forward to different things, because God has created each person unique. Some individuals look forward to the preparations and presentations associated with programs and parties. Some look forward to time spent with friends and family. Others long for moments where they will be able to slow down and become silent for a while. For some there seems to be little to look forward to. Yet, for others they can hardly wait to be a part of all the festivities. What are you looking forward to this year? Let me encourage you to anticipate the One, who really matters. Listen to the words of Isaiah the prophet in Isaiah 12:4 In that day you will say: Give thanks to the LORD, call on His name; make known among the nations what He has done, and proclaim that His name is exalted. What has the LORD done? He has given His Son, Jesus, to be the Saviour of the world to be your Saviour and my Saviour. Jesus came to save us from our sin a condition that each is born into, which causes us to miss the mark of Gods holy standard for our lives. Jesus also came to give us an eternal purpose worth pouring our lives into an abundant life as we walk in step with Him and share Him with others. Jesus is the One, whom Christmas is all about. A relationship with Him gives a person true satisfaction in this life. I encourage you to anticipate Jesus and let Him make the difference in your life this year. Merry Christmas!

. Residents are reminded to please exercise caution and care when shoveling, A Reminder to Pet Owners In consideration of your fellow residents and regardless of the size of dog, picking up after your dog is considerate and expected, as per Bylaw 1-1999. This means all year, winter included please pick up after your dog. Your neighbors gratefully thank you! Did you know.Cats and dogs are required to be licensed in the Town of Springside? Licenses are due February 1st of each year, as per Bylaw 1-1999. Please stop by the Town Office to obtain your pet license for 2014. Licensing fees are as follows: $10 for cat or dog and $5.00 if they are neutered or spayed. We have had several instances whereby a lost animal was re-united with its owner because of the pet tag that the animal wore around its neck. Failure to license your pet will result in fines being issued. While on the topic of animals, weve seen several animals freely roaming around in our community. Letting your pet run loose puts our community and them in danger. There have been occasions where animals get hit and die in traffic accidents. Motorists may be injured trying to avoid hitting these animals. When allowed to run at large your pet can be killed or injured by other animals, they can ingest poison or come to harm in numerous other ways. A large playful dog may frighten seniors and children and can cause injury by jumping up on them. Dogs and cats also create conditions for disease by ripping apart garbage and by soiling property. A stray dog or cat also puts people at risk for rabies. Pets that run free contribute to an increasing pet population problem in our community. Owners who fail to keep their pets from running at large are subject to fines. Did you know. When your organization applies to SLGA for a lottery license for bingos, raffles, ticket sales, etc, you may be eligible for a 25% grant on the proceeds? Apply for your raffle license for your organization today for your grant! Contact Tracey Carmichael at 1-800-667-7565. SNOWMOBILE Operators are reminded that snowmobiles are permitted into Springside only for the purpose of arriving or departing a point by the shortest route.

E-mail Addresses Wanted! The age of instant communication by e-mail makes it possible for the Town Office to notify residents of important issues like water shut offs, changes to rates and policies, emergency notifications. The Town is happy to keep you informed by email or texting address, but they need your email address to do this. Call or email the Town Office for details. springside.town@sasktel.net Do you require a Building Permit? Building permits are required for most new construction projects and renovations to existing buildings or land. This includes decks, garages, fences and sheds, even if they are being moved in. These permits ensure that your project will safely comply with the municipal Zoning Bylaw and the National Building Code. For more information, contact the Town Office, 792-2022, springside.town@sasktel.net FIRST RESPONDERS and FIREFIGHTERS NEEDED First responders are responsible for responding to calls for help within their area and to provide patient care until an ambulance can arrive. If you are interested in volunteering with this rewarding organization, please contact the Town Office 792-2022. Training and equipment provided. Anyone interested in joining our municipal fire department is also encouraged to contact the Town Office. Sidewalk snow removal..During the winter months, snow and ice on sidewalks can seriously impair the ability of people to get around safely - especially the elderly and those with mobility restrictions. For that reason, the Town of Springside has a bylaw in place requiring owners or occupants of property to clear sidewalks of snow and ice to prevent injury or inconvenience to pedestriansespecially during extremely cold weather.

2014 Utility Rates An application has been approved by the Saskatchewan Municipal Board for approval of 2014 utility rates for the Town of Springside. Starting Jan 1, 2014, the quarterly water rate will increase by $10.00 and the sewer rate will increase by $5.00. Coming Soon.Curbside recycling. Springside Municipal News (Cont) convenience of placing recyclable items such as plastic, metal and tin, paper and cardboard into a moveable cart which will be emptied every couple of weeks. Whitesand Wildlife Federation World Rivers Day 2013

In 2005 The United Nations launched the Water for Life Decade to create a greater awareness of how water resources should be cared for. At that time there was a proposal made to create a global event based on the success of BC Rivers Day created by Order of Canada recipient Mark Angelo in 1980. The first World Rivers Day event was celebrated across many countries in 2005 and has continued to grow since. World Rivers Day is held annually on the last Sunday of every September. As of 2012 more than 60 countries take part in various activities to celebrate the value of our waterways. On Sunday September 29 to celebrate World Rivers Day and to honour the th 20 anniversary of the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, members of the Whitesand Wildlife Federation and families teamed up with the Assiniboine Watershed Stewardship Association (AWSA), the Yorkton Air Cadets and the Yorkton Wildlife Federation to perform a shoreline clean-up of the Theodore Dam and the Whitesand Regional Park.

-Mike Biblow
Summer Sizzle Committee President
After a revitalization of the summer sizzle in 2013 we are happy to say that plans are under way to repeat in 2014. A newly formed executive is in place with many others joining along. An organizational meeting was held in October to get things rolling, establish a direction and formalize a constitution for the committee, The Summer Sizzle committee can be defined as the overseer of the events, and it has been stated that our purpose is to embrace and accept the entire community and surrounding area by means of events whose purpose is to raise funds for the the betterment of the community through the involvement of many community organizations. We welcome any and all groups to please become involved and bring your ideas to us for your chance to be involved. But please don't feel there isn't a spot for you in our group because you are not involved in other organizations as we welcome every individual to join our committee and any future volunteer efforts are appreciated. It has been decided that the summer sizzle will be held on Saturday June 28/2014. So get involved and come out to one of our monthly meetings. Summer Sizzle committee president, Mike Biblow

-As many days old as is the moon on the first snow, there will be that many snowfalls by crop planting time. -If ant hills are high in July, winter will be snowy. -If the first week in August is unusually warm, the coming winter will be snowy and long. -For every fog in August, there will be a snowfall the following winter. -Squirrels gathering nuts in a flurry will cause snow to gather in a hurry. -As high as the weeds grow, so will the bank of snow.

Super Lions fan, Charlene Bateman of Springside Caf couldnt resist the challenge of super Riders fan, Warren Liebreich when the Riders and Lions went head to head on Sept. 22nd. The bet was on and the loser would have to sport the winning teams jersey for a day. The end result was a 24-22 victory for the Lions with Charlene winning the wager.

Christmas Memories
- Judy Berrns
Christmas memories, where do you start? As a child, of course, presents were oh so importantand guess what? We only received one or maybe two gifts. And the gifts were always something that we wanted or should I say, dreamed about, or actually needed. We always opened them up after supper on Christmas Eve and then Christmas Day was supper at my Aunts house in Theodore with all the family. Somehow we all managed to have a sit-down supper tooanything that could be used for a table was set up and a tablecloth draped over it. Good food, lots of laughter, great memories. As an adult, memories of Christmas focused on trying to divide our time between two families on Christmas Eve and Christmas DayLester and Katie Fredrickson of Theodore and Gordon and Doreen Berrns of Springside. Thank goodness we lived reasonably close so it was doable. Food always played an important part as well. Turkey and stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, always a jellied salad, my moms dinner buns, mincemeat tarts with a lid on them of course! At the Berrns get-together, more great food plus, Brians mom, Doreen always made a square called Marshmallow Square. It was a pink fluff made with maraschino cherries and almonds and it always graced the two tiered dessert tray that was also laden with butter tarts, shortbread cookies and Nanaimo bars. A big supper always, and somehow before one would leave that night, more turkey and cranberry sauce with fresh homemade buns and warmed-up mincemeat tarts with a dollop of vanilla ice cream. Each year there was a new board game to play, or perhaps charades, or feats of agility, which Brians sister Marie always astounded us with her ability to do with the greatest of ease. Every year some poor soul was the victim of Grandpa Pinders or Grandpa Berrns pranks Have you ever seen stars up a coat sleeve? was a favorite and they all just loved it when a new person was introduced into the family so that they could fall prey to their practical jokes. Our kids loved Christmasthe gifts and getting together with cousins and waiting for Santa to get there. Jared used to get so excited that he was almost physically sick by the time it rolled around.

Decorating the house, putting up a tree, sending out Christmas cards, wrapping gifts plus finding hiding places for the gifts as both our boys tried their best to sneak a peek at their gift ahead of time. It was only years later that they confessed to once or twice, opening the gifts when we werent around and then rewrapping them once they saw what was in them. One Christmas in particular the waited until Brian and I were asleep and then crept downstairs, opened their gifts, played with them for a while and then went to bed. Sometimes it was just too difficult to wait until morning. Memorieslots of them and every one is cherished and relived over and over. Wishing everyone a very happy, safe, wonderful Christmas and all the best in 2014.

Wintertime with Jesse, Audrey, Trina, Jamin and Tarin Cobb

-Rhonda Eastcott
The Christmas season for the Cobb family is a time to visit and get together with family as everyone has time off from their jobs. Their church follows the bible closely and parishioners dont celebrate with the commercial trappings that so many people partake in. Instead it is a time to share in the closeness of family time spent together. Some of the special treats enjoyed during the season are turkey dinners followed by waffle cookies, Mexican wedding cake, white chocolate almond bark and eggnog. During family visits a favorite past time is playing board games. Audrey and Jesse related playing Farm Game, which would appeal to many in our area, played rather like Monopoly with an agriculture twist.

Christmas at Disneyland
-Nancy Duns
I remember many Christmases, but most particularly, the Christmas when I was 10. My family went on a bus tour down to Disneyland. My two siblings, my folks and my grandparents , on a big bus. My sisters and I were thrilled! The hostesses were very entertaining and kept everyone busy...I remember being fined and having to pay 10 cents each time we said the word bus. We toured Disneyland, mostly in the rain. I fondly recall wearing a water resistant jacket that we bought down there and sitting on a bench in front of Knotts Berry Farm. My younger sister took her shoes off and her feet were like raisins...all wrinkely!! It rained for days! I also recall buying an autograph book. I dont know if the kids these use them now or not, but I still have mine with the Disney characters on the front. Our Christmas dinner was at a Chinese restaurant with a big staircase with red carpet to the entrance. It was an unusual version of what we knew to be our traditional roast turkey. But we got fortune cookies and my sisters and I thought that was neat! It was a great Christmas!

Strawberry Ribbon Square

-Lisa Cole
My favourite part of any special family meal is definitely strawberry ribbon square! I always look forward to it at Christmas. Crust: -2 c graham wafer crumbs -1/3 c melted butter Filling: -125 g pkg cream cheese softened -1 1/2 c milk -4 serving size pkg vanilla instant pudding -2 c prepared dream whip Topping: -85 g pkg raspberry or cherry jello -1 c boiling water -425 g pkg frozen sliced strawberries in juice To prepare: Crust: Combine wafers and butter press into a 9x13 pan bake at 350 for 5-10 min let cool Filling: Beat cream cheese with 1/2 c milk until smooth. Add remaining milk and pudding to mixture. Fold in prepared dream whip until thoroughly mixed. Spread over cooled crust. Chill. Topping: Dissolve jello powder in boiling water. Add frozen berries, breaking apart with fork. Stir until slightly thickened, 3-5 min. Spoon over filling. Chill until firm. A little time consuming but well worth it its an amazing dessert everyone loves.

1 full box of Vanilla Wafers 5-6 - ripe Bananas, sliced Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Separate 3 eggs, set the whites aside for later use in the meringue. Break up yolks with a fork and set aside. Add 3 cups of whole milk to a saucepan. Over low heat, slowly add the flour, whisking rapidly to dissolve any lumps. Stir in sugar continuing to whisk until dissolved. Slowly add the egg yolks to the saucepan, whisking rapidly and continually. Do not add them too quickly or they will cook and curdle and don't walk away or the mixture will scorch. Keep stirring. Increase the heat gradually up to about medium as you constantly whisk the pudding mixture. Continue to stir it constantly as it thickens. When it has thickened enough to look like pudding, remove from heat, add the teaspoon of vanilla and continue to stir as it cools down. Set aside to cool. When custard has cooled down, spread a light layer of the pudding in a casserole dish. Add a layer of Vanilla Wafers. Reserve about 5 or 6 wafers for topping later. Add a layer of sliced bananas. Add a layer of pudding mixture, spreading it out to the edges of the dish. Repeat the layer process as needed, ending with a layer of the pudding on top. Crumble reserved wafers and sprinkle on top. Meringue: 1/8 teaspoon of Cream of Tartar 1/4 cup of Sugar Place egg whites in a glass mixing bowl. Beat the egg whites until frothy. Add Cream of Tartar. Increase mixer speed and beat until the egg whites form soft peaks. Add the sugar and whip until soft peaks form. Do not over work the egg whites as it will cause them to lose volume.Gently spread the meringue over the pudding mixture. Place the dish in the preheated 350 degree oven and bake for 10 to 15 minutes until lightly browned. Cool and enjoy.

Margo Chamberlains Christmas Memories

Margo grew up on a farm near Lesley Sk. and is of Icelandic descent. Her family grew or raised everything they ate. The tree was always put up Christmas Eve and presents were put under the tree when all the children had gone to bed. Times were hard, and Christmas presents were usually homemade. The Christmas concert was always held on December 21st and Margo was always Alice Blue Gown ( in a play which was written for Teddy Roosevelts daughter, a beautiful young lady who was the American equivalent to a princess). One year when times were harder than normal, Margos father informed the family that there would be no presents that year. On Christmas morning when they got up there were two red turtleneck sweaters; one for Margo and one for her sister. Their dad had butchered all his turkeys and had gone into town and sold them to anyone who wanted one. With the proceeds of his turkey sales, he was able to buy the presents. The memory of the feel of that wonderful sweater remains with Margo to this day. Another special memory was wearing a dress for Christmas that was made for her by her Mother. On Christmas day, all of the family would come out to the farm. Margos Mom, who was a wonderful cook would make rolla pulsa, which is a Scandinavian meat roll, and would serve it with homemade brown bread, which was a special Christmas treat . Music was always an important part of the Christmas festivities and her Mom would play the piano, accompanied by her brothers and sister, who played guitars.

Rolla Pulsa (meat roll)

-Margo Chamberlain.
2 lbs. flank beef steak 1 Tbsp. salt 1/4 tsp. saltpeter 2 medium onions 1/2 tsp. allspice 1/2 tsp. cloves Spread flank steak out flat. Mix together dry ingredients and onions. Spread over the flank, then roll tightly as a jelly roll. Sew the meat roll shut, or tie it and place in a netting. Place in a brine (salt and water) in fridge and turn every day for 4 or 5 days. Then boil for 2 hours or bake at 350F. Place the roll into a pan or roaster and cover with a platter and place a heavy weight on top. Leave the weight on for at least a full day. Slice rolla pulsa thinly and serve on fresh homemade bread. Homemade brown bread was the best!

Christmas Trivia
We celebrate Christmas on December 25th because in the fourth century, Pope Julius I announced that Christs official birthday would be December 25th. Prior to his ruling there had been a great deal of confusion. No-one was certain about the year, let alone the month or the day.

Buckwheat Cabbage Rolls (Holobtsi)

Bring to a boil 3 1/2 cups of water, 1 1/2 cups roasted buckwheat, and about 3 tablespoons of chicken base. (If the brand of base you use tends to be quite salty, cut back on the amount). Simmer until all the water is absorbed. Chop 1/2 lb of bacon and a large onion. Fry the bacon first, and when its almost done add the chopped onion and fry for 10 more minutes. Mix bacon and onion into buckwheat, add black pepper to taste, and cool. Core a head of cabbage and immerse in a pot of boiling water. When the leaves loosen, take the cabbage out of the water. Peel off the leaves gently, and trim the veins. If leaves are too large, cut them into 2 or 3 smaller pieces. Place 1 tablespoon of buckwheat mixture onto each leaf, then roll and tuck ends in. Place cabbage rolls into a buttered casserole dish or small roaster. Pour a cup of tomato juice (or one can of tomato soup mixed with a can of water) over the cabbage rolls. Bake at 350F until cabbage is tender, about an hour and a half.

Ukrainian Christmas January 7th
The celebrations begin on January 6th,when traditional Christmas Eve dinner (Sviata Vecheria) is served in a 12-dish meal to honour the 12 apostles spreading food for the soul throughout the world. There are no meat or dairy products on the table a symbol to show respect for the animals. Ukrainians celebrate Christmas based on the Julian calendar, two weeks later than celebrations outlined in the Georgian calendar. Youll often hear the words Khrystos rodyvsia during the season, which translates to Christ is born as the traditional greeting. Christmas on January 7 is a centuries old tradition based on the old Julian Calendar that is celebrated by both Ukrainian Orthodox and Catholic Churches.

Instead of glittering ornaments and tinsel, some Ukrainian Christmas trees are covered with artificial spiders and cobwebs. According to the local folklore, there was a poor woman who could not afford to decorate their Christmas tree. But the next morning, her children woke up to see the tree covered with webs and when the first light of Christmas morning touched the web threads, they turned into gold and silver and the family was never left for wanting again. Hence, it is believed that seeing a spider web on Christmas morning brings luck.

Life is But a Stopping Place

-Author Unknown Life is but a stopping place, A pause in whats to be. A resting place along the road, To sweet eternity. We all have different journeys, Different paths along the way. We all were meant to learn some things, But never meant to stay... Our destination is a place Far greater than we know. For some the journeys quicker For some the journeys slow. And when the journey finally ends, Well claim a great reward And find an everlasting peace, Together with the Lord.

Writer, Henri J. M. Nouwen once said, The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing . . . not healing . . . not curing . . . that is a friend who cares. Many times we see the families that we serve are surrounded by those kinds of friends, who show their support during the holiday season. However, when the New Year rolls in, often times those supportive friends feel their work is done. To get us all through that January slump, we at Christies Funeral Home would like to invite you and your family to:

Set up a course where players putt across frosty greens and the ever changing conditions ice, slush, blizzards keep it exciting. Use a rubber ball and hockey sticks or a broom to sink aces like the pros. What You Will Need: Old margarine containers scissors Spray bottles felt or garbage bags Green food coloring tape Various obstacles wooden dowels or sticks How to make it: Sink a margarine container in the snow and stomp down an area around it and make it even with container (hard packed snow holds colour better then fluffy snow) Mix water and green food colouring in a spray bottle, than spray the mixture on the packed snow. Once the green is set, add wacky obstacles like hula hoops sunk halfway in the snow, a toboggan upside down, a tunnel through the bottom of a snow man. Get creative! To make a flag, cut a triangle from felt or garbage bag and tape it to the wooden dowel or stick Happy golfing!

Rainbow Bridge
-Margaret Ann Irving
I did not compose this, it was given to me as a gift many years ago, but this is too good to not share so this is this issues contribution from Fur Fettish Farm, the author is unknown. I am sure we, the true animal lovers hope this is true. Rainbow Bridge will need a traffic light when I arrive if it is.

Winter Protection for your Outdoor Dog

A warm kennel or doghouse, preferably in a southfacing or sunny area, is vital for an outdoor dog. Face the entrance away from prevailing winds or drafts. In an area that's particularly windy in the winter, build an Lshaped entrance to the kennel. The kennel should be well insulated and the floor should be elevated several inches off the ground. A dog will hold body heat inside the kennel if extra bedding, such as hardwood shavings (not pine or cedar) or straw, is provided. Old rugs or blankets should not be used for bedding -- a dog will track in moisture on his feet that can turn to ice. Heavy fabric or pieces of carpet attached to the top of the kennel's entrance will cut down on drafts (beware of protruding nails or hooks). Throwing an old blanket over the top will increase the insulation factor. The kennel's roof should be slanted or angled so that rain and snow will not collect there. A doghouse should be big enough for your dog to stand and turn around in, but snug enough to help hold in body heat. At least weekly, check the inside of the kennel for damp bedding mold and mildew. (Every dog faces increased risk of respiratory and skin infections in the winter.) Cut ventilation slits in the kennel walls to help get rid of mold and mildew.

Rainbow Bridge
-author unknown Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food and water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor, those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing, they miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but then the day comes when suddenly one stops and looks into the distance. The bright eyes are intent, the eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to break away from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face, your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of you pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross over Rainbow Bridge together......

Such short little lives our pets have to spend with us, and they spend most of it waiting for us to come home each day. It is amazing how much love and laughter they bring into our lives and even how much closer we become with each other because of them. John Grogan, Marley and Me

Preventing Frostbite and Frostnip

Frostbite can attack when temperatures are below freezing. Wind and humidity can shorten the time it takes for frostbite to occur. Follow these recommendations to prevent frostbite and frostnip for yourself and your children:
x

Do not go outside in very cold weather after a recent bath or shower. Wear warm clothing and dress in layers. Layer 1 wear clothes that will keep moisture away from the skin. Thermal underwear, moisturereducing winter sportswear, cotton socks and mitten and glove liners are good items to use. The first layer, like the other layers, should not be so tight that circulation is impeded. Layer 2 wear loose clothing that is intended to resist dampness and maintain body temperature. Heavy pants, sweaters and sweatshirts are good items for layer two. Layer 3 wear tightly woven moisture-resistant outerwear. Moisture-resistant coats and jackets, hats, scarves, gloves and mittens and boots are good third layer items.
