Diana Arias Honors Comp Rhetorical Analysis Go To ATU and Come Home The claim the author makes

in the Arkansas Tech University with Shannon Roberts, the psychology major, is to attend and enjoy their time at the Arkansas Tech University. The claim isnt directly stated in the ad; however, it can easily be inferred by the praises of Arkansas Tech University. The ad also highlights the real experience an actual student attending the university has had due to her decision to attend Arkansas Tech University. The reason for the ad is that a student wants to feel at home, interact with their fellow colleagues, and be involved within their campus. The warrant is that a college student wants to fully enjoy their college experience. The warrant ties both the claim and reason together. The audience of the ad is high school graduates looking to further their education. It focuses on traditional students. Students who will be leaving home for the first time and being away from family and friends. It also reaches out to students who like to be involved in their community. The designers make it evident that the traditional student is the target audience. We know this by paying close attention to the age of the student in the ad itself. She is a young adult. If the ad were to focus on an older audience than the representing student would be older. Another indicator that the target audience is the traditional high school graduate is the claim that the university will be a home away from home. The assumption that the student will be living on campus; therefore, leaving what they would have known as home. The ad appeals to pathos, using persuasive material that evokes emotion. The ad uses the anxiety some students may face about leaving home. It addresses the

Diana Arias Honors Comp Rhetorical Analysis circumstance that these students will be far from home and need a comforting peace of mind about where they will be for the next few years of life. Feeling at home would be a comforting thought when faced with stressful situations that come with the milestone of attending college. The ad uses fear in order to attract students to their university. The student in the ad portrays a big smile. Smiling is associated with being happy. Happiness and fear are on the opposite ends of the spectrum. Therefore, the ad makes a statement that Arkansas Tech will make the student happy. The ad is focused on Arkansas Tech University being a home away from home. It tells us about all they have to offer along with all the campus life involvement opportunities for students. In the text along the bottom it states, With Greek Life, campus recreation and plenty of student activities available on campus, youre sure to find your place at Tech. All of these choices helped them to reach out to their target audience. Those certain elements jump out at me. At first glance, I see the Arkansas Tech University student. She is the focal point even though she takes up about one third of the page space and is placed on the right. The vibrant yellow and royal blue in her outfit make her stand out from the opaque green and white colored background. The solid yellow shirt, solid blue shorts, and backpack worn make up an everyday outfit. The statement would be differently made if she were to have been in a pants suit while carrying a briefcase. Her laid back posture is casual. She isnt trying to stand up straight or broaden her shoulders to a proper position you

Diana Arias Honors Comp Rhetorical Analysis would be if talking to a superior. Her pose adds to the purpose of the ad. Her body is relaxed; as would a person be if they were comfortable. Everyone unwinds for their day once they are home. By showing that she is calm the ad shows that Tech is as comforting as being home would be. The clear statement, I knew Tech was close to home, but I didnt know it would feel like home, is the second thing my eyes are pulled towards. The statement takes up almost two thirds of the ad. It is oriented towards the left. The way we naturally read is left to right. Hence, our eyes will be pulled to read it before noticing the smaller texted near the bottom of the ad. The white text is placed in front of a dark green. The color palette chosen gives the ad a good contrast, which is easy to read. The color choice of green is made according to the school color of Arkansas Tech being green and gold. Green is abundant in the ad as to unconsciously emphasize Arkansas Tech to the audience. The font choice helps ease the eyes as well. It was chosen for clarity. There are several fonts that could have been chosen. However, if the font had been a too informal, such as a font like this or this, the audience would not take under consideration Arkansas Tech. The logo and the smaller text near the bottom right edge of the ad are the next element to come to my attention. Logos have a strong influence on a person. They are easily recognizable and also represent a whole company. Although the text is a considerably small point font size, it utilizes size to allow the ad to look clean. Jumbled information is not attractive. Just as a person wants to be talked to with a clear message, the ad comes right out and tells the audience exactly what they are

Diana Arias Honors Comp Rhetorical Analysis trying to get across. In that case, people appreciate the clarity provided. If someone is straight forward, then you are more likely to feel comfortable to be around him or her. For this particular situation, the college comforts the audience by being true with the type of environment they offer to their students. The alignment is also well enough organized to where the mass block of text isnt too overwhelming in comparison to the bigger picture on the top part of the ad. The logo placement is strategically surrounded by some white space. Therefore using the white space to call attention to the logo and avoiding over crowding with the smaller text. The white space calls attention because the upper part of the ad seems to have quite a bit going on. Overcrowding can happen quite easily if the text is longer than ten words. The ad handles having all that text by utilizing the white space as depth to the logo. Bolding their main idea Arkansas Tech becomes a home away from home reemphasizes their overall purpose.
