Clare Paronich Grade/Subject Area: 4th grade ICT classroom Math Date of Lesson: October 23, 2013 Type

of Setting: This lesson will be taught in an urban classroom in the Bronx. It is a district 11 school. This classroom is an ICT classroom. Several of the students have IEPs that range from learning disabled, other health impairment, to emotionally disturbed. In addition, many of the students are English language learners that speak Spanish, Albanian, and or Arabic. Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to teach students how to multiply multi digit numbers by a 1 digit number using regrouping. The essential questions are: How can I use regrouping to multiply? Why do you estimate before you multiply? Vocabulary: Times - to multiply Product -the answer to a multiplication problem Multiply - The act of finding the total number of items in a given number of groups when each group contains the same number of items. It is a short cut for addition Common Core Learning Standards: CC.4.NBT.5

Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models. Objectives and Skills: Use regrouping to multiply a multi-digit number by a 1-digit number

Demonstrate their understanding of place value. Demonstrate their understanding of regrouping.

Pre-assessment:
Students have previously been learning how to multiply using the distributive property, drawing models, and using partial product. Today they will learn an additional strategy to multiply multi-digit numbers.

For the pre-assessment, students will be given multiplication problems where they have to find the estimated answer. Lesson Presentation: Set-Induction: The teacher will post the problem of the day on the board. The students will be given a short amount of time to complete since there are answer choices to choose from. The teacher will then have the students do the engage problems that are on the smart board in their notebooks. The engage problems are estimating when multiplying. The teacher will then go over them will the students. Procedure: The teacher will then review the previous days work, which was multiplying using regrouping with two digit numbers. The teacher will give the students practice problems on the board and show them how to use regrouping to multiply. The teacher will do sample problems with the students and will encourage student participation during this particular part of the lesson. The teacher will have the students come up to the smart board to do the sample problems. The teacher will then hand out math work sheets and break the class up into groups. Some of the groups will have teachers guiding them and some will be working independently. The teacher will review the problems with the students and have them check their work as a class. Closure: To close the lesson, the teacher hands out a post-it check. The students answer the question on the smart board and post the post it in the back of the room. At this time the students will know that the lesson is over and get ready for the next period. Materials: Smart board Math work sheet Graph paper Follow-Up Activity:

To ensure the students understand the material correctly, they will be given homework in their math standards and practice book. This homework will be given out after the lesson usually after lunchtime though. Evaluation: The students are being evaluated based on the post it progress check at the end of the lesson. The teacher will check the post it check and use them to group the students for the following days lesson. Differentiation: For visual learners all of the problems are up on the smart board and they will be given a worksheet during the lesson. Students who the teacher perceives to be struggling will be grouped with a teacher for small group instruction in the middle of the lesson. The students will receive graph paper to help line up the multiplication problems and keep the place value correct in the numbers.
