Mobilism Proposal for Carl Sandburg Elementary School -- Second Grade What is your justification for using handheld

devices in your class? Handheld devices (iPads) will allow us to integrate technology while also enhancing content instruction for students in the classroom. The use of this technology aligns with the ISTE standards for digital-age learning as well as the Educational Technology Standards of Arizonas Common Core Standards (AZCCS). iPads will improve the portability of learning -students can take them from one area of the classroom to another, or from one part of the school to another. They may be used individually, in small groups, or with direct instruction from the teacher or aides. The variety of mobile applications offered through the iPad will engage students interest, furthering lifelong learners. Finally, students will be able to bring these devices home -- facilitating the overlap of learning between the school and home environments, improving communication with parents, allowing for peer collaboration, and enabling innovative practices, such as the flipped classroom. How will you use handheld devices in your classroom? Example 1 -- Enhancing general classroom instruction. The teacher will plan lessons in core content areas such as Math, Language Arts, Social Studies and Science with direct support from individual use of iPads for independent practice and evaluation. Apps such as Dragon Box Math, Story Patch, and Accelerated Reader will help to motivate students interest and reinforce learning, as well as aid the teacher in collecting data for assessment. Example 2 -- Support for differentiated instruction. iPads may be used for reading and math interventions through practice with various mobile applications. In addition, the teacher may use an application such as Educreations to create simple audio and visual tutorials tailored to the individual student, including those who are working above-level as well as below. Children may then use them as a targeted instructional tool at home or during work in classroom centers.

Example 3 -- Group collaboration by using educational gaming to provide learning engagement. This will give students an opportunity to collaborate: a real world skill. Incorporating fun gaming into the curriculum will encourage collaborative learning, and may be used as an incentive in classroom management practices. How will you address classroom management once the handheld devices are in your classroom? We will create a clear and detailed acceptable use policy for students to follow in the classroom. The policy will include details pertaining to setup, downloading, care, and usage of the individual devices. Students, as well as their parent/guardian, and the teacher will be required to review the policy and provide a signature to that effect. Spot inspections of iPads will be conducted weekly to ensure that students are in compliance. In the event that any nonschool material is found, the iPad will be restored from backup. Students using the iPads in class are expected to model responsible use of the Internet. Rules for the use of iPads will be posted in a visible location in the classroom as a student reminder. How will you (or your district) address security and privacy issues? Security filters will be in place from the school administration to prevent students from visiting sites not authorized by the teacher or district. The teacher will provide regular guidance during student research or use of the internet to ensure compliance with policy. iPads will be stored in the classroom when not in use at home, in a charging station that is secured with a lock and key. Each student will be paired with their own specific device, catalogued according to serial number. This will aid the teacher in keeping track of each individual students behavior with the device. Periodically, students will be allowed to bring their iPads from school for home use. They are responsible for returning them fully charged. Rules and policies for home use will be included in the acceptable use agreement. We will further encourage students families to take an active role in guiding and monitoring childrens iPad activities at home. In the event that a

student receives any inappropriate e-mail, or a security issue arises with their iPad, they will be expected to bring it to the schools attention immediately. Is there any other pertinent information that would help your proposal? The proposed handheld devices for the class will be the Apple iPad Air Wi-Fi, 16GB. We would like to acquire 30 iPads for a Grade Two classroom of 27 students, plus a teacher and two paraprofessionals. This iPad model has approximately ten hours of battery life. In addition, our plan includes the purchase of shock resistant casings to protect and ensure the life of the devices. Two desktop storage (charging) stations are requested as well, that allow for simultaneous charging and synching of the iPads, as well as providing a secure storage location. Finally, we are including a Mac Book Pro, for purposes of managing, tracking and synching under a single account. The price breakdown is as follows: 1. iPads: 3 (10 packs) @ $4790 each 2. Desktop storage: 2 @ $1099 each 3. iPad Cases: 30 @ $35 each 4. Mac Book Pro: 1 @ $1899 Total: $ 14370 $ 2198 $ 1050 $ 1899 $ 19517

Fulfillment of this mobilism proposal will improve the educational experience for students, lead to a variety of increased learning opportunities, assist in tracking student performance, and meet AZCCS and ISTE guidelines.
