The Education Manifesto 1. Separation of College and Sports a. Whereas athletic ability is independent of academic skill. i.

Athletic ability shall not lead to cheaper/free education. ii. Academic ability ought to determine educational future. b. Whereas funding ought to be separate, yet affiliation remains intact. i. Clearly, athletics would earn a larger profit than the schools themselves. Thats why the system that is today is in place. ii. Athletic team would pay the school to use facilities, the name, etc. iii. System would be more like system used in pro sports. Pro team pays city/stadium=college team pays college. iv. Safeguards- Athletics may develop too greatly and build own stadiums/use own names. However, this results in loss of team loyalty; greatest contributors to athletics are the students and fans. c. Whereas students deserve the ability to school at a certain college while sport at a different college i. The two skills could be disproportionate ii. Many great athletes unable to participate due to lack of academic skill. iii. Many scholars forced to go to lesser universities due to pursuance of athletic goals. iv. Many variations of this dilemma. d. Problems with theory i. Athletics could become too powerful 1. Still must pay university for name/facilities; fixed percentage for all schools at a corresponding division. D1 pays more than D3 for example. 2. Could be a benefit rather than curse. These teams could be run more like clubs and be more effective. (European soccer system) ii. Students could drop out of high school 1. No reason for education if sports are their future. 2. The New High School Diploma a. Whereas all rights/privileges ought to be earned at the conclusion of high school. i. Right to vote, privilege to drink, privilege to drive, privilege to smoke, ability to work, military service (including draft), etc. ii. Drivers license administered upon graduation. Each student will take extensive driving courses throughout high school and will be required to pass to graduate. This license seconds as a work permit. iii. Arbitrary dates corresponding to the reception of these rights and privileges lack any purpose. iv. Each individual matures at different rates and certain ages do not/should not be the benchmark for the reception of these rights and privileges. b. Whereas dropouts/malicious behavior decrease.

i. The importance of graduation is intensely magnified. ii. Students will work harder to pass their classes. iii. Discipline records would have a direct correlation on a students graduation date. 1. A suspension would result in that student actually attending more time equal to the days missed, etc. iv. Students would not be able to drop out to work. Graduation is necessary to legally obtain a work permit. There is absolutely no reason to refrain from graduating. c. Whereas each individual progresses separately. i. Classes year round. Summer break is arbitrary and unnecessary. Teachers would be paid more as is customary. ii. No set grade levels based on age. Parents can start children as early as they want or as late. iii. A students graduation map is given at the start of their education. Approximately 13 years of schooling is given (including kindergarten). However, can be completed in less time with readily available summer classes. Failing a class would necessitate student to take extra time (summer/night school). Passing every class is necessary for graduation. d. Whereas high school is centered on civics rather than higher learning. i. Easier to graduate yet more necessary for those not entering an academic college. ii. Civics includes government, resume building, taxes, mechanical work, ethics, etc. iii. Classes are pass/fail. Grades are arbitrary as colleges will use separate measures to pick future students (i.e. SATs, essays, letters of rec, INTERVIEWS, etc.) iv. Basic reading, writing, math, history, and science. No higher than current sophomore level. Some alternatives only for these classes. Otherwise all other classes must be passed. No reason for AP/Honors classes- forces college ready students to stay in high school longer. Graduating earlier is preferred. v. Exceptions- earliest graduation date is 14 years for moral purposes (case by case basis), special needs (can obtain license w/o graduation if able to drive and work), latest graduation date is 22 (case by case basis/must prove readiness)
