Week 1
Topic: Soccer Standards: Standard 1.1: Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions Standard 1.2: Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics Standard 1.3: Students present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics. Learners will compare views of sports in the United States and Spain. Assessment: Exit Slip: Paragraph summarizing comparisons and contrasts between sports in the United States and Spain. Literacy Strategies: Concept Map, Double Entry Journals Additional Information: This lesson will focus on learning about soccer and other important sports in Spain. Students will compare the focus of sports (hobby or something more) to the views of Sports in the United States. Standard 2.1: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the culture studied Standard 2.2: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and perspectives of the culture studied Standard 4.2: Students demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons of the cultures studied and their own Learning Goals: Learners will investigate the Spanish Inquisition through jigsaw reading and structured notes, scoring at least proficient on a scoring rubric. Assessment: Students will create a poster, brochure, or other visual aid to present to their other groups. Literacy Strategies: jigsaw, structured notes Additional Information: This lesson will focus on what the Inquisition was and why it took place. Students will pair into various groups to look up different viewpoints of the Inquisition and then present to other groups. Students will also create a visual aid for their presentations, as well as watch a humourous video to assist with comprehension of such a serious topic. Week 3
Topic: Spanish Armada V. Learners will analyze what occurred to make the Spanish Armada lose. Learners will also discuss the consequences. Assessment: Students will turn in an exit slip, summarizing the battle and its repercussions. Literacy Strategies: Exit Slip, Inquiry chart Additional Information: Students will create an inquiry chart in regards to the battle, based on the history they have already studied in the past three weeks, predict what will happen in the battle, study the battle and analyze the conclusion. Assessment: The students role-play of various moments of the Spanish Civil War will serve as their assessment. Assessment: Students will put on a mock trial for a member of the Royal family. Literacy Strategies: Anticipatory set, Paired Reading Additional Information: The Spanish Royal Family is plagued with controversy. One such is the embezzlement of funds by the son in law of the king. Students will have to

look into the various controversies, chose one, and put the controversy to court, arguing for or against that royal family member.
