Teacher Candidate: Deandrea Gibbs Lesson # 4 Subject/Grade: Science/ 1st Date and Time of Lesson: November 21, 2013 Learning Objective: Students will be able to identify the concept of sinking and floating by testing three objects in water. Alignment with Standards: Standard 1-1: The student will demonstrate and understanding of scientific inquiry,
including the processes, skills, and mathematical thinking necessary to conduct a simple scientific investigation. 1-1.3 Carry out simple scientific investigations when given clear directions. 1-1.4 Use appropriate safety procedures when conducting investigations.

Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections: This learning objective is developmentally appropriate because it is helping the children understand how to measure and compare various objects by using a different means of measurement. Assessment(s) of the Objectives:
Lesson Objective(s) Assessment(s) of the Objective(s) Pre-Assessment- The students will record their prediction on a chart. During-Assessment- Class as a whole will test to see which objects will sink or float (apple, squash, and pumpkin). Post-Assessment- Students will record the results on a chart and complete a sentence stating what they used to think as to what they know now by conducting the experiment. Use of Formative Assessment This lesson is a brief introduction to the idea of buoyancy, which will be taught in depth in future grades.

Students will be able to identify the concept of sinking and floating by testing three objects in water.

Accommodations: For the students that may not be able to explain their knowledge of what theyve learned in a written format will be allowed to verbally explain it to me themselves. Materials: Clear tub, Water, Pumpkin, Squash, Apple, Chart Paper, Worksheet, Science Journal, Smart board, Apples
by: Melvin and Gilda Berger, and Seed, Sprout, Pumpkin, Pie by: Jill Esbaum

Procedures:
1.) Refresh the classs memory on what they have been learning about as far as these three different items.

A. Alright class so lately you guys have been learning about these three items (squash, pumpkin, and apple) in class and even in your stations. So lets review over these items! (Take a picture walk through out the book and point out each item and its features. 2.) Explain to the students what we will be doing for the day. A. Well today were going to do something fun with these! We are going to see if these three things sink or float in water!

3.) Ask students if they know what sinking and floating is. a. Can anyone tell me what sink and float means? (Allow the children to respond and then explain to them what it is). Sink is when an object goes under water and floating is when an object stays on top of the water. 4.) Explain to the students what they are going to be doing with the three items. a. So now Im going to pass these items around and you guys make sure you act like little scientist and observe them. See how heavy it is and what it feels like but, this pumpkin (attempt to pick it up) is too heavy so you just use your eyes and look at it. 5.) Allow children to go back to their seat to record their predictions. 6.) Pull up worksheet on the smart board to show students how to complete the chart. 7.) Call the students back to the carpet. 8.) Record the predictions on the class chart. 9.) Conduct the experiment by placing each item one by one in the tub of water. 10.) When pumpkin is placed in water point out the fact that its heavy and still floating. 11.) Briefly explain why this happened. a. See the pumpkin holds a lot of air in the center of it which causes it to float. 12.) After explanation, allow kids to go back to their seats and record the results. 13.) Explain to the children that they have to fill out the sentence below the chart stating what they used to think and what they know now and why. 14.) Return class back over to the cooperating teacher. Activity Analysis:
Prediction -Allow the students to grasp the idea of what an actual prediction is. Filling out the sentence -This allows the children to recognize what they have learned and its a review of the entire lesson. *Technology will be incorporated and used to the display the worksheet that the students will be completing for the experiment.
