Antonio Couser-Redmond English 110 Solutions Solutions are all over the earth; some man-made and some

that have naturally formed. The fifth grade students will be able to identify a solution and its elements upon the completing of this activity and lesson. The students have already learned how to differentiate between a solid, liquid, and gas. They also have learned how evaporation and condensation work, as well as the basics of mixtures. Each added lesson will build on the previous one and this will ensure a better comprehension of the states of matter and how they can be manipulated. This important aspect will be shared with the student and they will be given a brief overview of each lesson before it is taught. This makes sure all students are aware of where this lessons is going to take them academically so theres no confusion. In order to effectively instruct this lesson, I will use the process of making Kool-Aid. Kool-Aid can be broken down into basic elements and this process possesses each element of a solution. This will give the student a visual representation of how each component of a solution operates to construct the liquid. Once they complete the in class experiment they will have to write what they learned and understood from the experiment. This will not only promote selfevaluation, but this will also prepare them for the classwork that will be done immediately after the completion of this assignment. Not only will the student be given classwork, but homework for that night as well, and each will provide them with more visual representations of solutions; the student will then need to label each part of the solution. I will then quiz them on solutions after I review their classwork and homework with them in class. This will ultimately benefit the students when they are tested on the states of matter later on in the nine weeks when the full lesson is complete.

A solution is a homogenous system; which means all parts of the solution is evenly spread (no parts of the solution is plainly seen by the naked eye). Solids, gases, or other liquids can be dissolved in liquids to make solutions. In this activity a solid will be dissolved in a liquid. There are two parts to a solution: a solute and a solvent. The solute is dissolved in the solvent to make the solution. Therefore the solid, gas, or other liquid being dissolved is the solute, and the liquid its dissolved in is the solvent. Amongst all the possible solvents, water is known as the universal solvent due to it being the most commonly used amongst all solutions. In the experiment, the Kool-Aid packets and the sugar are the solutes and the universal solvent will be used to dissolve these solids. The materials needed are a two-liter liquid container, one that has removable lid and an opening wide enough for mixing, a large mixing spoon (wooden, plastic, or metal will do), two Kool-Aid packets, sugar, and about two liters of water. First, empty both Kool-Aid packets into the two-liter liquid container. Next, fill the container with water, stirring the forming solution as the container is being filled. Be sure not to fill to the rim; leave about an inch and a half of space at the top of the container so the Kool-Aid wont overflow. Stir in enough sugar to satisfy the experimenters taste buds. Finally, enjoy the product of the experiment. This experiment should allow the fifth graders to identify the solutes and solvents in any solution. They should be able to not only identify the Kool-Aid as a solution, but other solutions as well. This will be enforced in the classwork and homework. The writings that will be done before the classwork should include: a review of a solute and a solvent, a brief explanation of the experiment, and at least two other examples of other solutions with solutes and solvents. This writing and classwork should ultimately contribute to the preparation of a student for their Standards of Learning (SOL).
