Class Management Plan for PSI Practicum Victoria Budgell A.

Goal Create a positive learning environment where students are able to succeed to their fullest potential. B. Define Positive Learning Environment A positive learning environment is an environment in which a student feels both safe and warm. If a student feels safe and cared for, they will feel important which will lead to more productivity. Students who do not feel safe or comfortable in a classroom are less likely to learn which mean they will be less likely to succeed. C. Building PLE: Interpersonal Connecting interpersonally with students is an important element to developing a positive learning environment. There are a number of steps I plan on taking in order to accomplish this goal. First, Id like to build a positive relationship with my students. By learning each of their names, getting to know them and where they come from, being fun and lighthearted, I hope to develop a relationship with each student individually one where they feel important, welcome and included. Next, I would like to provide a classroom environment that is both safe and caring. I want my students to feel comfortable and welcomed, important and safe. One of the ways I would like to accomplish this is by implementing a no swearing/bullying policy. Swearing and bullying are both signs of disrespect, and neither is conducive to a positive learning environment. I also plan on supervising my students, listening to them and showing them genuine concern. Finally, students require a positive role model in order to develop and grow into successful human beings. I would like to be that positive role model for my students and be a leader. To do this, I will start by ensuring I display a professional, confident appearance with appropriate mannerisms. I will model the positive behaviours and attitudes I expect from my students. I will also take charge and teach with enthusiasm. I would like my students to be inspired to become independent leaders, to take charge, and to stand up for what they believe in. D. Building PLE: Planning and Organizing In order to provide an environment where my students can succeed, it is important to be prepared and well organized. When preparing for lessons, it is imperative that one teaches in a manner that all students can be successful. To do this, I plan on incorporating variety while taking into account different learning styles, creating lessons that are fun and engaging, creative, instructing with enthusiasm, and involving students in the planning process. It is also just as important to ensure you, your classroom, and your students are well organized. A chaotic environment is not conducive to a positive learning environment. My classroom will be well organized: the room is clean, desks are arranged and in order, and there are areas clearly designated for different materials (textbooks, dictionaries, worksheets, paper, craft supplies, etc.). As an instructor, you need to ensure you yourself are in order and prepared for the day. This means that I will be well prepared and have put together any materials or equipment prior to a lesson, handouts are photocopied, resources are booked or gathered, and classroom transitions will be prepared for ahead of time. My daily agenda will be posted clearly for all the students to see to prepare and organize

themselves. Expectations will be very clear and routines will be in place for events like bathroom breaks, attendance, responding to questions, and class movement from one room to another. E. Building PLE: Expectations It is important for students to behave in a fashion where the learning environment is one where everyone can be successful. As a class at the beginning of the year, I intend on having us create a list of rules and classroom expectations as a whole. This way the students are involved in the creation process and rather than being held accountable solely to me, they will instead also be held accountable to themselves. Rules will be posted in an area where everyone can see them. As an instructor, I will be clear and consistent with my expectations so nothing will come as a surprise to my students. Consequences will be clear and followed through with in the event one of the rules is broken. F. Maintaining PLE: Daily Structures for Effective Functioning As mentioned previously, its important for students to know what to expect. This helps them prepare and organize themselves, it promotes classroom efficiency, and routines are developed. Specifically, there will be procedures in place for events such as: transitioning between activities, movement between classrooms, locker breaks, recess, forgotten supplies ie. pencils, cellphones and technology, attendance, and early completion (sponge activities). These procedures will be practiced initially as a class to ensure students know what is expected and then gradually they will develop into habit. If by chance a mistake is made, students will be corrected and reminded gently regarding what the proper classroom procedure is. As an instructor, it is my responsibility to ensure our environment is safe and productive. It is crucial to monitor and maintain students and student behaviour. To do this, I plan on having my back turned to the class very minimally during lectures or discussions. I also will be walking around the class as I talk or while the students work independently to ensure they are on task and behaving appropriately. Finally, in the event that I should need to intervene and respond to student misbehaviour or disruption, I will take the following steps: Level of Disruption High Example of Behaviour Desk throwing Fighting Type of Teacher Response Verbally ask them to stop without physically intervening Contact the appropriate authorities: office, police Remain at the scene until help arrives Short verbal response 1 sentence max. Non-verbal: pause, look, closer proximity
