Morgan Rosbrook Mrs.

Furr Honors Chemistry 27 October 2013 Honors Project: Hydrogen Hydrogen is the 1st element in the Periodic Table, its atomic number is 1, it also has a mass number of 1. Hydrogen contains 1 proton, 0 neutrons, and 1 electron. Hydrogens electronic configuration is 1 , hydrogen has a valence number of 1. (3) Hydrogen is the lightest element in the whole Periodic Table with a mass of 1.00794 grams. Hydrogens melting point is 13.81 K and its boiling point is 20.28 K. The phase that Hydrogen is in at room temperature is gas. Hydrogen is a non-metal and is located on the far left of the periodic table. (2) The word Hydrogen comes from two Greek words, hydro and genes. The Greek words, hydro and genes, together mean water-forming. Back before hydrogen was discovered, scientists had been making it for many years before they even realized what they were really making. The first person recorded to have made Hydrogen Gas was Robert Boyle in 1671. When Boyle made hydrogen he didnt know he was experimenting with iron and acids. Even though Robert Boyle first discovered Hydrogen in 1671 Henry Cavendish didnt recognize it as an element until 1766. (2) Hydrogen is said to be the simplest and most abundant compound in the universe. It is also said that 90% of the visible universe is composed of hydrogen. Hydrogen is used in the

Rosbrook pg #2 Universe a lot. The stars use hydrogen to produce energy and the sun uses hydrogen to produce light. Hydrogen can also be very dangerous element; you can mix hydrogen and nitrogen from the air and make ammonia. Also some oils like peanut oil contain hydrogen through a process called hydrogenation. (2) There was an article on how a professor at Penn State University has discovered a new way to produce hydrogen using simple wastewater or saltwater. He hopes that one day his discovery could eventually lead to producing an unlimited supply of renewable energy. He figured out that adding a precise amount of certain activated bacteria to wastewater or saltwater produces hydrogen energy as its byproduct. When he put electrical currents through the water he discovered that the hydrogen-producing bacteria stared to consume organic compounds in the water. This experiment could lead to a great new advancement in the world of alternative energy. This could replace the use of all fossil fuels that are used for energy and are destroying our atmosphere. (4) The council of Scottish Western Isles is going to get hydrogen vehicles. These vehicles will only run on hydrogen and wont burn fossil fuels into the atmosphere. The vehicles will never leave the island and will belong to the islands council. A fueling station in Stornaway called H2Seed Facility will fuel the vehicles. The funding for the cars and the fueling station will come from the councils funding group called H2growth project. The council has been funding this project for five years and will continue too until the future of the project is finished. (5)

Rosbrook pg #3 Hydrogen, as you can see, can be used to produce many different things. Some of the things that hydrogen produces can save the world one day if we put forth the effort and try to fix our atmosphere. (1)
