The DOUBLE ENTRY JOURNAL is a method for taking very structured notes as you read challenging texts.

Please use this table and take notes on the left hand side of what the text actually says (direct quotations are fine) and then jot down corresponding reactions questions and clarifications on the right hand side. !e have provided an example of what a double entry journal entry might look like below. !hen we assess these we will be looking to see that you actually read the chapter and we will be interested in what strikes "#$ as interesting and important as well as what you need more clarity about. This statement really caught my attention. !hen ( try to 22change22 someone2s idea or at least convince them ( would try to show them how. ( really wonder what are ways for the heart and mind to agree4 (nteresting statements just keeps coming out from the book. 8howing this to a person who have not read the book will see it as confusing but those who read it will find it meaningful. This also relates to the first statement in the way emotions and mind have to both agree. 9asically it is saying that if you tell a person to change they may have an idea of what2s going on but they may not feel as confident in doing so. Their emotion is bringing the person down from continuing on with the change which causes them to be lost in a way. ,lthough the person may try their

&To change behavior you2ve got to direct the 7ider motivate the *lephant and shape the Path. (f you can do all three at once dramatic change can happen even if you don2t have lots of power or resources behind you.)

This is my favorite statement of the first chapter because it summari;es most of what ( have read. ,nyone can change people whether you have advantages or not but the three steps shown helps change a person easier. This also means trying to get their 22gut22 feeling to agree with your idea of change. .astly shaping the path will make the ideal change easier. ,fter leaning so much from the reading from the first chapter< ( cannot wait to continue with the book and explore to a deeper idea of what the author is trying to tell me.
