Composition in Photography

Answer the two questions and then use the Internet to find a photo that is a good example of each type of composition listed below. You might have to do some research on some of the compositional elements that we discussed in class if you dont remember what they are. 1. Define Composition 2. What is a photograph (as opposed to a snapshot)? Be VERY specific and detailed in your answer.

Leading Lines Photographer: Henri Cartier Bresson Year taken: 1932 Context: Taking a picture of the stairs when a biker went through the shot

Depth Photographer: Father Browne Year taken: 1912 Context: Taken on the titanic. There is a person in the foreground, middle and background, showing depth.

Isolation or Simplicity Photographer: Ansel Adams Year taken: Not known to source Context: This is very simple and shows the rose as the focus and the rose is very isolated.

Focal Point Photographer: Jim Brandenburg Year taken: Unknown Context: The picture is taken where the world is not very evident in the picture in the sense that it matches the color of the trees and seems camoflouged but it is the focal point because it is the main focus of the picture and is very clear.

Symmetrical Balance Photographer: Roman Fiser Year taken: Not mentioned Context: This is symmetrical by the wing shape and the negative space it creates. Taken for a nature magazine.

Asymmetrical Balance Photographer: Ansel Adams Year taken: Unknown Context: A tree above a landscape. This is not symmetrical, it is asymmetrical.

Framing Photographer: Henri Cartier Bresson Year taken: unknown Context: Taken of boys playing in dirty street. The broken wall frames the picture.

Center of focus Photographer: Garry Winogrand Year taken: Unknown Context: The guy doing the flip is the main focus of the photo and the background is blurred. The photo was taken of a guy doing a flip.

Movement OUT OF the frame Photographer: Henri Cartier Bresson Year taken: 1932 Context: The biker is leaving the photo.

Horizon dividing the frame in half Photographer:? Year taken: ? Context: Where the sky and the water meet is about halfway in the middle of the photo.

Horizon dividing the frame based on rule of thirds Photographer:? Year taken: ? Context:Where the water and the land meet is one third, the guy standing is another third and the outside of the guy is another third. Also, the sky is one third, the guys torso/where the water comes into the island a little bit, and then the foreground of the grass is another way to split the thirds.

Diagonal Dynamic Lines Photographer: Yevgeny Khaldei Year taken: May 2, 1945 Context:The flag pole is a diagonal line going across the frame.

Bonus Question: Define positive and negative space in a photograph The negative space is the space around objects, this space is abstract. The positive space in a photograph is the physical objects in the photo.
