SUMMATIVE PHOTOSYNTHESIS LAB Problem: How does the color of light (blue or red) affect the rate of photosynthesis

in Elodea from a distance of 5cm? Hypothesis: If put under red and blue light at a distance of 5 cm, then the red light will produce more oxygen. Theory: 1. Where does photosynthesis take place? Photosynthesis takes place in plant leaves, inside cell. Inside the cells are chloroplasts. 2. What is needed (the reactants) for photosynthesis? Carbon dioxide, water and sun light. 3. What does photosynthesis produce? Oxygen and sugar 4. What is chlorophyll? Chlorophyll is the place were photosynthesis takes place by capturing sunlight and using it to make energy molecules. After that these energy molecules help make sugar 5. Why is photosynthesis important to animals? Photosynthesis changes Carbon dioxide and water to oxygen and sugar, if animal Breathing to much Carbon dioxide maybe there will get sick with lots of symptom even died. But when plant doing photosynthesis they will change Carbon dioxide to oxygen and when they doing photosynthesis they will changes water to sugar, sugar is also very important to animals and that is why photosynthesis important to animal. 6. Why do you think red light will produce more oxygen? Red light is absorbed by chlorophyll during photosynthesis where oxygen and green light are emitted.

PROCEDURE: For Light Intensity 1. Measure and cut at an angle elodea 7 to 9 cm. 2. Remove a few leaves from end of stem and slightly crush end of stem. 3. Measure mass in grams and record. 4. Put elodea stem side up in a test tube.

5. Fill test tube with water and baking soda solution (1 tsp to 100 mL of water). 6. Put tube in rack and adjust lamp 5 cm from top of test tube. 7. Turn on lamp and wait 1 minute. 8. After 1 minute, begin counting small, medium and large bubbles for 3 minutes. Record data. 9. Repeat at 10 cm with same size and mass elodea 10. Repeat for Trial 2 DATA/OBSERVATIONS:
Trial 1 ___grams

CONCLUSION: 1. What was the average rate of photosynthesis for your group at: a. 5cm b. 10 cm 2. What was the average rate of photosynthesis for the 7th grade at a. 5 cm b. 10cm 3. Was your hypothesis correct? Explain. My hypothesis was that the rate of photosynthesis would decrease with increased distance from light. This was correct but this is not so clear for the average for the 7grad.

4. What can you conclude from this experiment? I can say that photosynthesis occurs at both distances and more at the shorter distance. ANAYSIS: The experiment showed that the distance from light may change the rate of photosynthesis but the results were variable. Maybe the stems were different from the start. We will need more plants and distances to really find out 1. What was difficult to control in this experiment? The sizes of the bubbles vary and it is difficult to find out if the rate of photosynthesis is different and measured correctly. 2. What changes would you make to make it more accurate? I would want to measure the rate photosynthesis at more distances and more cups of plants per light. I will also need some one counting bubble from the back of the plant too. 3. Why is understanding photosynthesis important? Because photosynthesis makes oxygen and sugar that is important for us and other living creatures.
