Darryl Plummer Post Lesson Reflection (31 October 1 November 2013) 1. To what extent were lesson objectives achieved?

? (Utilize assessment data to justify your level of achievement) Daily Objectives: Students will be able to (SWBAT) Compare maps to solve geographic questions Estimate percentages of land area Ascertain why culture is different in one area vs another Use charts to answer geographic questions Determine geographic meaning from maps Compare history and geography to solve geographic questions Skim information for meaning

Based on my initial feeling by checking students papers before they turned them in and on discussions or questions asked of me, I think all but objective 6 was obtained. I expected the questions that pertained to objective 6 to be the most challenging and was unsure if students would be able to answer them meaningfully. Some did, but I think most did not. Students worked in groups of 2 and individually, asking each other for help when needed. I really liked the way the group dynamic work. Most in fact didnt work in defined groups, but rather just asked someone near them when they were stuck. This made it so my role as a facilitator was minimal. I did check students papers as they finished because there were some questions they tried to answer lazily or maybe didnt go into enough depth on. Since they finished early, I figured it was better to put them back to work on expounding on ideas than have them sit around doing nothing. Most did finish a bit early, so this worked out well. I didnt have any students sitting around causing trouble after finishing. All students got an A on it. This is partly because I had time to review their papers before they turned it in and suggest which questions they should take another look at. I used this assignment more of a formative assessment.

2. What changes, omissions, or additions to the lesson would you make if you were to teach again? This activity was in itself a backup plan. I was originally going to do a lecture on the European Union but decided that with Halloween on the 31st and Friday on the 1st, it would be better to turn the students lose on an activity. There were a couple of questions that were unclear or had multiple answers which I would change.

Darryl Plummer I think I could go over the scavenger hunt and I could talk about some other cool stuff that the questions didnt quite get to (like maps and how we use them, etc), but I feel it would be better just to move on at this point so I can get into the more group oriented activities. #2 What is similar about these 3 cities? Some students said theyre in Europe. I need to be more specific on this question. #4 What region is this country in? Again, some said Europe. I was looking for the Low Countries. #26 Why did Portugals relative location change over the last 500 years? My goal was to get students to consider the age of exploration and how it became not on the edge of the world, but the center of it. Most were not able to put this together and had trouble with this question. I think if I phrased it differently, it would help. 3. What do you envision for the next lesson? (continued practice, reteach content, etc) Although I think objective 6 was barely obtained or not obtained at all, I will be moving on to the European Union. I am ok that students as a whole did not obtain it because I expected it to be on the fringe of their abilities. I will be moving on the lecture on the European Union on Monday.
