After analyzing the data for this math unit on subtraction, I was pleased with the outcome. On the pre-assessment, which was an Am I Ready? quiz, the average grade was an 80.2%. This is a decent class average for a pretest. The median was a 79, which means half of the class scored below this, and that is not a very good starting place. Above, there is a pie chart to show the number of students who did not pass the preassessment quiz, which means they made below a 70%. There were only 6 out of 25 students to fall in this category. For a pre-assessment that is to test how much the students already know on the subject, a passing rate of 76% of students is a good place to start. This allowed room for improvement for the students, and it gave me an idea of the strong and weak areas of the students before I began the unit. The post assessment showed a tremendous increase in the class average and median. The average grade was a 93.64%, which is an S (equivalent to an A letter grade). The class median was a 97, which shows that half of the class made above that, and that is outstanding! According the pie chart above, all 25 students made a passing grade on the final assessment of the unit (70 or better). I chose three individual students to analyze their progress throughout the unit: student #24-AS (below average), student #6-MC (average), and student #20-EL (above average). Student #24-AS is a student who is consistently below average. This student has an IEP with no official accommodations at this time. I always give this student his own accommodations in the classroom (i.e. reading an assignment to or with him, extended time, etc). On the pre-assessment, student #24-AS scored 15/24 which is equal to 63%. He/She was one of six students who did not make above a 70%. I read the preassessment to student #24-AS. The post-assessment showed improvement, on which

the student scored a 97%. Student #24-AS is in resource for math (and reading), which is more one-on-one. The student also took the post-assessment (unit test) with the resource teacher. She read the test to student #24-AS, and gave two possible answer choices on multiple choice questions, instead of the usual three choices. I would like to do a follow-up assessment with this student to see how much information is being retained. Student #6-MC is an average performing student in all academic areas, including this math unit. The student made 20/24 (83%) on the pre-assessment. On the postassessment, student #6-MC scored 97%. The student made an increase after being taught the lesson. One thing about this student is that he/she is inconsistent with paying attention and putting forth his/her best effort. Some days, he/she is ready to learn, and sometimes, not so much. I think student #6-MC has the academic ability to be above average, but he/she must up his/her motivation level and start staying focused more during each lesson. Student #20-EL is what most teachers would consider the ideal student. The student is an above average performing student, all of the time. He/She is in the gifted and talented program. On the pre-assessment, student #20-EL scored 24/24 (100%), and also scored 100% on the post-assessment. Even though the scores reflect the same number, I know the student still gained much knowledge throughout the unit. The student always puts forth his/her best effort, and then some. He/She seeks perfection in everything.
